When I had a plant like yours for Xmas in 2006 and when it done flowering and by March, I took it out of the house and placed it in my patio garden. I never cut off any leaves but I tried to tie them up somehow. Then the new leaves grew out of the bulb and became stronger and shorter thanks to all the light outside. While the plant was outside, I fertilized once a month with Osmocote and then by end of August I forced it to bloom for Xmas again. That was what I did with my plant last year.
I'm sure other people on the forum will give their ideas.

What did you do in August that forced it to bloom for Christmas?

Karen, if you are located in part of Cali that has very mild winters, you can plant the bulb out in your garden and let it grow and flower naturally. If you prefer to keep it in a container, just allow it to keep growing... now is when the bulb will grow and recharge for the next blooming cycle. It will require plenty of light, and it will need some fertilizer.

Re-potting to a larger container is a good idea, as long as the new pot is the right size, and has good drainage. Choose a soil that drains well and plant the bulb at the same height it's planted at now. Water and fertilize over spring and summer, and if you want flowers for next Christmas, you'll need to put your bulb through a dormancy period.

Since I allow my bulbs to flower at their natural time, I don't make mine rest for Christmas blooms. You can do a search here in the forum and find loads of good information on how to force your bulb for next Christmas.

Take care when watering your bulb... they hate to have their roots too wet for too long... and prefer to dry out a bit in between waterings.

jstropic, I learned from ealier posts to force-bloom amaryllis for Xmas, as Jodi said above. To make it easier for you here, I explain what I have done and provide the links for your reference:

By end of August-beginning September, I unpotted the plant. Then I cut off all the leaves, washed the soil off the roots but left the roots intact. Next I hung the bulb, now leafless, in the shade for 1 week to dry out a bit before I wrapped it in newspaper and placed it in the vegetable compartment in my fridge for 8 weeks. (I took care not to have apples in the fridge at the same time!)
After the 8 weeks in the fridge, I took the bulb out. The roots were mostly dried and brown, especially the smaller roots. I cut off all the dried roots and kept the ones that looked whitish. Then I placed the roots in a glass of water for a day to revitalize them (the Maria soak!), taking care not to let the bulb touch the water.
Finally, I planted the bulb in good soil and mist it to keep moisture. After 3 weeks, a scape appeared and then I had flower after week 5 in my humid and hot climate. People said in the US, it should bloom after week 6, which is around Xmas time!
