Fargesia rufa or similar type for sale

I am looking for clumping, winter hardy (zone 5/6) bamboo. I understand Fargesia rufa would be a good choice.

Who ships reasonably priced quality plants of the above or other similar bamboo?

I purchased a fargesia murielae this past spring from Tradewinds. Was very pleased with the plant and it did well over the summer in my zone 5/6 garden.

Man of the fargesias would work for you. Click on "Mountain Bamboo" as those I think are the hardiest ones they sell.

I'd agree with the rufa, except that it gets to 8' at most. Robusta is less hardy and will top kill at -5F. But if planted in the right place, it will send taller shoots each spring. If the old culms die, you can cut them to the ground in the spring and let the new shoots take over. You'd be better with something that doesn't die back, however. The other fargesias are slow to fill out and up. If you don't mind a lower screen, rufa may be the best option.

I ordered next years cherries on an 8' dwarfing rootstock that will ship Jan 3. I've ordered from them & Raintree before to get Dave Wilson Nursery stuff. Both are great. Also I've ordered from a tropical mailorder place in Punta Gorda, FL before. They are the best packers in the business. They have a huge variety of stuff. Important to me was avocados on west indian rootstock. All three have the advantage of not having to leave the house. I'm determined to get some avocados to the fruiting stage. I have at least a dozen varieties on different rootstocks growing in different areas of sun & shade. My yard is like a giant avocado experiment. Hopefully I will get one or two to produce. I am encouraged by a few of them, but only time will tell. I'm also excited about the possibility of cherries. I like growing the things people tell me will not grow here. The odd thing is I don't eat avocados or cherries. Lucky for me, I have a wife & grandchildren who love both.

The poles aren't as strong as you might think (native cane). The plants are very sensitive to the occasional droughts. I had a good stand behind my back yard in a forest and during the drought they died off . Later I found it growing in a low spot that normally floods. Ground water is going to be the key issue and rain runoff ditches are probably the best site for establishing a stand. Still, they spread underground and re-establish where there is adequate and continuous moisture so I have no idea how you would contain them. I don't find them attractive at all. A summertime short visual barrier if there's enough moisture but the rest of the year and in dry periods they do look ratty and the dead,dying leaves do persist. Are you trying to hide a view? As I mentioned, they aren't a permanent barrier. In the riverine (drainage/creek overflow) forest they would pop up in a different location every few years.

Thanks for the interest! Sadly, the following trees died: Gingko: deer and/or voles girdled the tree last winter and it didn't make it into spring. The top wasn't winter killed; it began to bud. The species would probably survive with some protection here (which I didn't give it), as there's at least one mature tree growing in Edmonton. Baldcypress: you didn't actually think that this would survive, would you? Neither did I, and it didn't. American Chestnut: I bought a very small sapling from Acorus Restoration when they still shipped live plants. It puttered along for three years, and just dropped its leaves and died last summer. It's possible that ants got to it: the ants killed a neighbouring apple tree. White mulberry: still growing! I bend the main stem to the ground to cover it with snow in the winter. It was looking kind of sickly last summer, though; trees have grown up around it and it's growing largely in shade, which it doesn't like. 'Exotic' survivors as of fall 2013: Catalpa speciosa x2 (but is killed above the snowline) Acer Saccharum (doing fine) Celtis Occidentalis (doing fine) Celtis Tenuifolia (doing fine) Morus Alba (needs winter protection) Cladastis Kentuckea ? Chionanthus Virginicus ? (both were shredded in an unfortunate weedwhacker incident) My 'experiment' trees for 2013 were Chinese Catalpa (C. ovata) and Devil's walkingstick (Aralia Spinosa). New England Bamboo Company (Mass.) sells and ships F. rufa. A lot of bamboo nurseries are selling the new tissue culture edition from Bamboo Select. It's F. rufa "Green Panda."

I hear that "Fargesia rufa" from a Spokane Washington grower is just as hardy a Fargesia murielae in that climate, and it doesn't surprise me the least.
Good luck rootman, it seems to be a bigger, and maybe better plant!

I have a bunch of F. rufa around the property, the oldest has been there for 3 seasons. They are hardy, stay green when other fargesias look ratty, and are smaller and more compact if you have limited room.

They reportedly get up to 8' tall and as much wide, but it can take some years. Mine are 3-4' right now, but will probably get taller shoots this year.

Start with #5 or #3 size plants so they're substantial to begin with.

I think rufa is your best bet. Of the bamboos I have in zone 6, it consistently looks good, even in cold winters.

Although I generally agree with Cady, I think New England bamboo tends to be very expensive when compared to other good nurseries (particularly after shipping charges). Although I have a "Green Panda", I'm not sure I would recommend it any more highly than the general species.

Yes, New England Bamboo is pricier than most others, but I've found the quality and availability of their plants to be excellent. Of course, I also am biased because they are close to where I am, so I drive there and pick up my orders and don't pay shipping! But you're quite right that there are many other good nurseries that sell at lower rates. I am impressed with the number of quality bamboo growers and sellers we have around the US and Canada. Most are dedicated to bamboo, and their business grew from that.

I bought some ruf anad scabria from Philinshelton based on recommendations from GW posters. Items were well packed and shipping was quick. Super-healthy plants and he was excellent to deal with.

kennard, how did your scabrida do this winter. my scabrida and robusta were both top killed. My rufa is fine.

I have tried several fargesias in SE Michigan, and rufa is the only one that has come through with flying colors. It's shooting like crazy right now and survived 2 winters with little topkill. I got it from a local supplier, who explained that our cold winters aren't so much the problem with most fargesias, but the hot summers.

our local lowes has nice 1 gal rufa for $14.97! already 3 ft tall and full.
