Sounds like you have native trees as you descrive the nuts, very tasty and small. OK late fertilizatibn this time of year can damage your trees in the winter because the fertilization will promoting late growth causing your trees will stay active later than normal making them susceptible to freeze damage. Fertilize from April or just as you see buds developing until June monthly. Get your soil tested so you can see what you need. You want your ph to be about 7.5. Your soil sample results will tell you how much Nitrogen and Phosphorus you need and anything else. Were late in July now so water is the best thing you can do. With it this hot do not apply zinc as a foliar spray it could burn the leaves. If you just have to do that apply it late - late in the day so it will be cool outside. Ya'll are doing a fine job teaching me about the options and things I need to keep in mind. The house is approx. 75 ft. across the front and 32 ft. front-to-back. I'm guessing here, but my estimate would be that the house is about 20 ft. high, to the peak of the roof. At any rate it's only one story. lol Our neighbor, who lives two houses down, has a beautiful Tulip Poplar with a h-u-g-e canopy. Like was said earlier, it is sitting out in the open so it has had room to expand. This particular tree is more of a cone shape with a very wide base (bottom branches.) Great spot to put a swing for those warm summer nights. Another of my problems is that the Fall Line Freeway will be coming directly in front of the house, adding at least 2 or 3 more lanes of traffic. *SIGH* This is one reason that I would like to have a row of trees close to the roadfront property line. The front yard is about 200 ft. wide so that is a nice amount of room to add a few trees. On the property, we already have a Black cherry (which the freeway will probably get), 5 remaining Pecan trees, 2 Pink Dogwood, and a 50+ year old Southern Magnolia. Then we have shrubs/bushes such as several 6 ft. high Azaleas and Nandina (it's gotta go!) Mom has many native plants in her flower gardens including Cherokee Roses, Leather-Flower vine (reticulata), Money plant, Wild Ginger/"Little Brown Jugs", and loads of other plants.

Our Jacaranda is around 8 yrs old and about 6ft high. It has been moved a couple of times but now appears to be in the right spot and is taking off well. It flowered for the first time last year. It has two single main trunks growing from just above soil level and both trunks are leafing and flowering. My husband wants to cut one trunk away because he thinks it looks odd and says they should only have one, but I love it the way it is. Is there any practical reason for removing one trunk, perhaps safety for example?

Jean, What part of KY are you in? I've been a member of the KY Nutgrowers Assn. for nearly 20 years. There may be a knowledgeable member in your vicinity who could give you some guidance. Some older varieties of pecan are noted for overproduction and poor kernel filling as they age. I'm not convinced that I've seen significant issues with Zinc deficiency in pecans here in KY...doesn't mean it's not an issue... but I've not recognized it. The holes in the trunks are most likely sapsucker damage. Rarely a significant concern - but I'm accustomed to seeing a lot of it on older pecan trees.
