Looks nice. Probably a Texas Mountain Laurel. Search this forum by that name, might find posts about it.

I would respectfully disagree with your choice of light and care. From the photo I would say your growth is very unhealthy. Internodes between leaves are much too large. Keeping a soil moderately moist is a recipe for disaster. I would read up on basic bonsai care on the FAQ page here. Looks like some kind of privet. I would encourage you to read up on bonsai and look at a lot of photos of trees you really like. I'm not sure how much time I would invest in this material. I would probably put it in the ground for a few years if it were a temperate plant and let a main trunk develop and chop off all the growth you have now. I see a lot of new to bonsai people invest a lot of time in less than adequate material like yours and after a number of years of work and training they have a less than adequate bonsai. Thank you daisyduckworth. With some more information from Wikipedia, I believe you're right: Perilla is a genus of annual herb that is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae. The most common species is Perilla frutescens var. japonica or shiso which is mainly grown in India and East Asia. There are both green-leafed and purple-leafed varieties which are generally recognized as separate species by botanists. The leaves resemble stinging nettle leaves, being slightly rounder in shape. It is also widely known as the Beefsteak plant. In North America, it is increasingly commonly called by its Japanese name, shiso, in addition to being generally referred to as perilla. Its essential oils provide for a strong taste whose intensity might be compared to that of mint or fennel. It is considered rich in minerals and vitamins, has anti-inflammatory properties and is thought to help preserve and sterilize other foods. In Nepal and parts of India, it is called silam. Its seeds are ground with chili and tomatoes to make a savory dip/side dish. In North America one of the purple varieties is sometimes known as Purple mint, Chinese basil, or Wild coleus (although it is not a mint, basil or coleus). I was going to weed it out, as much as I could, but I think I'll keep it. Besides, it's already in the "mint patch".

OK - the word allotment finally gives us a location. The apple (and it is 100% not a quince, even an unripe one) is still very small and until it is fully grown it is pretty much impossible to id it. You could take a sample along to your local Apple Day which is usually 21st October. It is likely to be a common cultivar given its age and position. The weed block is fine for keeping the plot from getting overgrown while you are clearing it. I used the same technique with my overgrown plot when I took it over 20 pus years ago. Just don't leave it down long term. Weeds will start to grow on top of it and you'll have terrible trouble getting it up again. Good luck with the allotment. My only real piece of advice would be to just do the next job, don't look at how much more there is to deal with - and be patient. GW is primarily used by growers in the US and their climates, crops, pests and techniques can be very different from ours so make sure you get UK specific information. But it is still a friendly and interesting site.

Thanks Greenlust - I did a Google images search & that is what it is, a Texas Mountain Laurel.

Janw - I have seen them all over Tucson and they seem to be doing well. This one is in the front yard of one of my mom's neighbors, east facing yard.

we have those growing in our neighborhood in the common areas along some of the roads. i love the look of them this time of year when they are blooming.

It's a very hardy tree, takes the heat and the cold. The flower clusters smell just like grape koolaid. The seeds are poisonous.

This one is a beaut! We live in East Mesa and have five (5) in our front/side yard. Yes they are beautiful when in bloom. Yes, they are beautiful even when not in bloom with their shiny green leaves. However, they are known to attract silk worms. For the past two (2) late spring/summer seasons, all five of mine were completely infested. In so much as, they all looked like a giant web was spun over each. Cut a branch off with the critters still attached, put it in a zip lock, took it to A&P Nursery on Brown Road and the staff there immediately knew what the branch was from and confirmed what the critters were, and sent me on my way with the appropriate treatment plan. This year, they are good as new. Just keeping a watchful eye out for the silk worms.
