For the past couple of years I have been obsessing with trees and planting seeds of any tree I happen to come across-I won't hesitate to stop the car and bang on a front door to obtain some weird thing growing in a front yard(My kids hate it when I do that!) I started out here on the wintersowing forum and have done many trades, but fell off the radar for a few years. Anyway I'd like to start trading tree seeds with anyone who shares my passion of getting a mighty oak out of that tiny acorn!!LOL!!

I will need to update my trade list but for now I'm looking for Kentucky Coffee tree, yellowwood, prickly ash, burr oaks, and hickories. For trade I have come across some American Chestnuts from my neighbors yard(Yes I asked), tons of black walnuts, and some apple seeds from antique apples(russets, if anyone is interested in these??)

I'm sorry I cannot help, but if it's worth it...you do have a good eye as far as the types of trees you want. Good luck!

It is rather late in the season to be gathering nuts and acorns from the Burr Oaks and Hickories around here, the critters or insects have pretty much gotten them all.

I have found that the big box stores, Menard's, Home Depot and Lowes, had Burr Oaks in their garden areas in the spring and fall. An easier way to get a trees started if one wants.

I wish I had more room for more trees!

Yes. THANK YOU!! Its people like you that take that tiny bit of extra effort to actaully find all the 'gems' here, that restore my faith in this forum. To just grab some text from posts, you can also use keyboard commands. Pressing control and the letter 'C' copies text you highlight into a hidden clipboard. Then you can paste the text into a program like Word Pad or other text reader. The PASTE function is done by pressing the control and 'V' key. Highlighting text is easy to do. Place the mouse pointer at the beginning of the intended text, while holding the left mouse button, you move down the text on the page which highlights it what you want to copy. After that, the control C is used to copy, and control V is used to paste elsewhere. My red pepper spread used balsamic vinegar, as well as roasted onions and roasted garlic. All were done on a gas grill with mesquite to add a bit of smokey taste.

well, I work w/ graphic designers, and it's very true--their tools have changed quite a bit. Classwork will really, really help. You know what also might help? Being able to sit at the elbow of someone doing a similar task w/ the software you're learning to use. Take the class first, but while you're taking it, start scouting out a publication, or advertising agency, or something--tap into those friends!--that uses the same publication you will. Contact a designer there, not necessarily the top cheese in the dept., and call. Explain yourself, and ask if you can come spend a little time watching them work. I've learned so much by seeing them do something quick, and then saying, "how'd you do that?" They then explain the tool to me, and bingo, I've got it. Seeing it happen in real life is such a big plus in terms of learning. Bcs I don't even know enough to realize the "tool" is in the program. I'd just figure out what the long way was, and do that. Then, once you're going, see if you can get them to come watch you design something. They may find efficiencies you could use. Also, one other thought: Efficiency is going to be really important. Maybe more so than creativity. So, try to spend some energy creating templates you can then simply tweak or use outright, without further fussing around. Another thing I've found: the PRINCIPLES are the same. We ship files electronically to our separator. We still send the "mechanical" (except now it's an electronic document, the QuarkXPress file)--it is the real, live, perfect thing that they will actually use. And, bcs an electronic file *can* be change and is therefore more vulnerable, the "mechanical" is now two parts--the one they use (the file) and the one they check it against. That second part used to be a printout. Now, it's a PDF. But the PRINCIPLE is the same as when it was paper. It just has another name. And often digital pictures are sent to the separator instead of actual artwork for them to photograph themselves (and sometimes actual film is sent by the advertiser, here), the principle is the same. Time consuming steps shaved off, that's all. So, as you learn the system for transmitting to the printer, or a program like Quark, with all the tools inside it (dragging, dropping, drawing, step-and-repeat, etc., try to compare with previous systems and methods--because the parallel is there. The same things are being accomplished. Also focus on the GOAL of each of these steps and not their names; it will help you understand them. And, you'll be able to mark them up even if you can't remember the term. (Remember the old days? You could write "KO type" on the tissue overlaying the mechanical; or you could have written "type should be white"--and the people reading it would know what you meant even if you didn't use the "KO" jargon) More random thoughts. Is it that you're intimidated by learning something new? Or is it that, because you are older and a better planner (and not idealistic and unrealistic, which we are when we're younger), that you have a clearer grasp of how complex this could be, and how inefficient you will be at first? That doesn't mean you should quit--just that you should STOP deciding this is an age-induced character defect, and start thinking of it as a "signal system" that's telling you something. It's telling you where the difficulties will lie which hopefully will help you tackle them. What software will you be using for your page design? I'm curious. (oh, and...if your printer can handle more than one software, you guys should use the one that your friends use, so you can use them as coaches)

Well, it only took me 45 minutes to finally find you all and get in here. I am easily frustrated. :( I'll have to come back tomorrow to explore more - depending on , of course, if I can get in again. Well, dad-blast it! My picture is sideways and I can't figure out have to move the picture out from in the middle of my typing! Aauuughhh!!!! edited = Well, why is my photo all stretchy? It looked sideways when I put it in but now it's upright.

Ain't that about the truth of it Farmboy1, I'm hoping I got enough beech seeds and the ash seeds I collected were wormy!
I don't really have all that much room either, most of my trees are started in milk jugs and then transplanted to larger containers. My yard is pretty saturated with trees so I just give the rest away to friends...It's how you can tell who your true friends are!! For instance I just planted 60 chestnuts in a large nursery bucket and I have NO IDEA were they will all go! Even if half germinate I still may be planting them along the fence rows in the dark!!LOL!! I have some hedgeapples that a three or four years old and I can't wait 'til they produce "fruit", the people up here have never seen anything like that.

Brandymulvane, do you call Osage Orange hedgeapples? We call them monkeyball trees here. Maybe your talking about another tree. I will have a few Cherrybark oak acorns extra. The person I got them from was generous, they are zone 5 hardy. I have a couple extra chestnut oak acorns too. But literally a couple. They are zone 4 + hardy. Only good drainage for those, the cherrybark can take some slow drainage, but not flooding too much.

Have you thought about buying the seeds commercially? By the time that you paid separate postage for multiple sources, the commercial source might be worth looking at. Sheffield's is probably my favorite commercial woody-plant seed source, but other good ones include F. W. Schumacher, J.L. Hudson, and Angelgrove Seeds. I didn't check, but I'm pretty sure they all have good Garden Watchdog ratings.

I 've had good experience with Schumachers too. You can get trial size packets of most seeds. Oaks are $3.00 a pack, so other seeds may be too.

Sorry I don't have the tree seeds you listed! I have some Tree seeds though. You are welcome to try any of the just LMK.

I've got the same compulsion to collect seeds of trees and shrubs I don't have room for, although it has not progressed to knocking on doors (yet). Maybe there is room for a few shrubs, but definitely NOT more trees. 8-/

I've got Cladrastis kentukea seeds which are the only tree seeds on my exchange list and you are welcome to do a SASBE. Although I collected some Linden - Tilia americana the other day. Couldn't help myself, those seeds were dangling there wanting to be picked. Both of these trees are rather prolific about seeding themselves around in the yard though.

Terrene, Thanks so much for the offer I'd love some!! I checked out your trade list and am going through my things for "native butterfly host plants" That's one of my "things" too! I should be able to check tonight(after I make pies) or maybe on Friday...I keep thinking we've traded before...be back with a list.

Hi Brandy, please feel free to take your time and ponder the seeds if you want something else besides Yellowwood. I don't know if we've traded before, but it's in my records somewhere if we did! You are welcome to do a SASBE anytime. I'm not quite ready to think what seeds to sow yet, too busy right now, but by early in the new year and with yucky snow on the ground? Then it's time to start dreaming about Spring sprouts...

As for the Yellowwood seeds - they look like little beans and no doubt require some cold stratification - 3 months is probably a safe bet.

Poaky1, yes hedgeapples are the same as Osage Orange! I remember a story of a monkeyball tree that was in a cemetery,pretty sure it was here on gardenweb. I would like to try some of your oaks. Did you want to do a trade or would a SASBE be ok, I still haven't had a chance to go through my seeds for Terrene. I could send a seed list to you also :-)

I just got your email. I'm beat today and have been to the post office twice today. I will send them out tommorrow. I didn't see a return email so I hope you check this thread. Some of the acorns have the taproot starting to emerge, just plant with that end in the soil and be careful not to injure it. I don't know if you've ever planted one so if you know all this sorry. If I find one without the taproot out plant it on it's side just barely covered with soil and protect from mice etc. Merry Christmas!
