What are your favorite beyond-the-basics garden tools?
Comments (30)Fawnridge wrote, "One other critical tool(?) for the garden - hoses. Man, you can't have enough hose bibs. I now have 4 around the perimeter of the house and I'm still missing one for the entire northeast side of the garden. Every bib has a 50' hose with shutoff valve and heavy brass nozzle. Fawnridge, tell me more! I have been batting around the idea of adding more hose bibs. I've even bookmarked a few how-to sites, but haven't delved into the project. Are you plumbing them yourself with PVC? Did you use a 4x4 post in the ground or attach to the house? Please give details and a picture or two, if you can. I would be most appreciative. Comments (21)Pampered Chef is excellent quality for the most part. There is the very odd item that doesn't work as well as a person would like but this is the exception rather than the rule. It is also pricey. The onion chopper was passed along to me by a friend who was cleaning out her kitchen stuff. She isn't keen on cooking from scratch I don't think. I find it very handy. Didn't know it was one of those things they flogged on tv until I just looked it up. I'm sure you can find it on ebay for a lot less. PS you still have to do SOME onion work so tears will still be shed. It does do a nice neat job and saves time though. I just bought a cheap knife set at Costco the other day. We will see how long they hold their razor sharp edge. They are the color coated blades with matching blade covers. For what I paid if they last a year I will be satisfied. Comments (6)Those, typically red and green, hanging plastic bags in which to grow strawberries, tomatoes, etc are useless. 1) First thing to note is that they are heavy enough just filled with soil but now add the water and they can really weigh down any support. You can get a strong enough set up if you hang it from house overhang but then it is always in the shade. Remember, 1 pint/lb for water and this will take sever gallons. I had used three "Shepherd's Hook" plant hangers to finally he able to hang it. 2) Then there is the regiment to keep it watered. It drains if too much water is used but you also have to water it two to three times a day especially after it finished producing fruit such as a strawberry plant. 3) Finally, it is difficult to get the water throughout the planter. I even added a 2" tube (with holes) through the center but it still did not seem to work. 4) Finally, water being poured at the top, will push plants and soil out of the openings. Really, I gave it a good try but gave up. Now when I have a plant sale I place this with a "Don't ever buy one of these" sign to warn everyone. I even stop and discuss it with people at the garden center....See MoreShow us some of your favorite gardening tools
Comments (21)My turn if this post works ;-) The iced coffee bottle is what I use to soak and rinse potting pebbles. I put the plug in the sink, put the kitchen sieve on the bottom then use the tea strainer over the open top of the bottle and empty the dirty water. Refill with water, rinse, refill, rinse etc until the water is clear. Any pebbles that tried to escape don't go down the sink. I also use the kitchen sieve to rinse perlite. Spray bottle for seeds (when I get some) or for dampening my Irish drum. Nail cutical tool, to nudge tiny plants, stones etc. Different sized droppers to water next to tiny plants without fat juicy leaves. Ruler to measure anything eg pebbles. Surgical knife I got from my G.P. (blunt now). Knife to replace surgical one. But its too blunt. Going to try King Of Knives, they used to have this style - cheap and really sharp. And/or;ask my doc. Various sized spoons for mixing and potting. Fork is for combing out roots. Small, wide spoon is to put mix sideways into difficult spots....See More- 10 years ago
