5 Gallon Bucket Tomatoes & 3 Gallon Peppers Watering Question.
Comments (15)Thanks for the info on the BER. First year container gardening so this is a whole new experience for me. I made my mix myself, Peat Moss (1/2 bag), garden lime (3 handfuls), perlite (1 bag), composted cow manure (1/2 bag) and 10-10-10 (12oz cup) and 2 cups coffee grounds mixed up well in wheelbarrow. Comments (0)I planted 31 Emerald Green Arborvitae trees (5 gallon bucket size) in March/April 2009 in Alpharetta, Georgia . 10 of the trees were planted in the front yard. I applied landscape cloth around them and mulched with organic Cedar. It is now late August and three of the 10 trees planted in the front have developed DARK BROWN buds. One has developed GRAY buds. What could be causing this and is there anything I can do to save these trees? All of the 21 trees in the back yard seem to be doing great (no mulch or landscape cloth on them). Thank you for your help....See MoreGrowing an Avocado in a bucket.
Comments (11)Hank is right  a dwarf would be good for your zone so you could bring it inside. I tried growing some in peat last year, but I have so many avocado trees I lost the tree. The seeds will germinate in peat. This year, I will try again. Avacado trees take about 4 years from seed to fruit. Although they are not true to seed, it is a cheap way to make mistakes. Avacado trees have tap roots, & may drop their leaves with transplanting. They usually come back, however. Depending on the size of your tree, a 5 gallon bucket would be good to start with. Tap roots seem to need a better degree of oxygenation, so you need to watch your roots &/or possibly add an air pump. The system should be kept extra clean. When it gets cold in your area, you will need to heat the bubbler. There are some threads discussing this. My hydro apple developed a phosphorous deficiency this winter because I did not heat the roots or nutrient. I have since corrected it, but it is one thing to watch out for. Nutrient management is most important with long term crops. Some growers use the soil based fertilizers for short term crops, but they just will not work for long term crops  nutrient deficiencies will occur, it may not fruit, or the fruit will be of a lesser quality. Depending on the size of your tree 3-4 years is a long time to be on a grow formula. You might need to try a grow formula & an all purpose formula as a control to see which works better....See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
