Any-one knows this tropical tree?

This tree appeared in my pot. And I haven't the slightest idea what it could be.

I worked with indoor plants for a while. It kind of looks like a fig. If I remember, it was called a fiddle leaf fig. Not sure however.

Fiddle leaf fig leaves don't have these tips, typical for tropical trees to get rid of surplus water. The form and size of the leaves don' tmatch either.

All of what is mentioned above is relevant. Yes, Stokes does sell a lot of bananas. The whole coastal region from the Texas border to the Mississippi border is solid Zone 9 and many bananas do well here because of that. New Orleans is 9b. South of NO, down that little sliver of land bordering the Mississippi (which by the way was completely wiped out by Katrina), is really almost a marginal Zone 10. Frost free many years. Even where I live, with a frost, or a hard freeze, the bananas Stokes sells come back, albiet, without the possibility of fruit. Nine or ten months of the year, we are hot, humid and wet. It's those two months that do us in from being able to grow really tropical stuff in the ground like heliconia, and tropical gingers. So far this year, our low here in Lake Charles was 30. We are pretty much finished with the possibility of a hard freeze. After Feb. 15, it doesn't happen. Everyone's bananas are up and putting out new leaves. If we are lucky, lots of fruit this year. " Forty-nine Garcinia species have been recorded in Malaysia (Whitemore 1973), and 30 of these species have edible fruit, of which G. mangostana is the most important one producing round fruit with slightly flat distal ends and naturally seeded, referred commonly as "manggis". The other less common type of mangosteen, known as "Mesta", produces obovoid fruit with slightly pointed distal ends (found in Pahang and Sabah, Malaysia) have very thick mesocarp and are mostly seedless or have undeveloped seed. Because the seed does not arise from fertilization, genetic variation was thought to be almost non-existent. Since the seed arises from the cell wall of the female flower and is effectively a clone of the mother tree, the seedling has her genes intact and unchanged for generation after generation. Several experiments have been conducted taking advantage of the most current DNA and RNA analysis techniques and it turns out that there is significant variation globally amongst the different populations of the mangosteen. There is a large proportion that has essentially the same genetic make-up (genotype) but there are significant numbers that do not. " So slightly different varieties of Mangosteen (G. mangostana ) are known to exist. Of course this would not truly be "Japanese Mangosteen", that would be Garcinia subelliptica, which is indeed native to the Southern Japanese island of Okinawa, Taiwan, and the Philippines. It looks like a Diospyros sps. to me from the little I can tell from that photo. Perhaps even Diospyros kaki.

Looks like WHAT I REMEMBER a bread fruit or maybe a mango might look. I left Hawaii a long time and another life ago.

but leaf-structure doesn't match any of the species, Kaki, mango nor Bread fruit

Must admit, Diospyros was my first impression too. But there's hundreds (maybe thousands) of tropical plant genera with this general leaf shape and shoot structure, they are notoriously hard to identify without flowers or fruit.

You are perfectly right, pineresin. If we had to choose among ALL the tropical trees, I wouldn't have posted my question. Simply because it would be an impossible task.

But it must be a relatively well-known tree because it germinated after buying another plant in a pot in Southern Florida. It's a pity but my friend who gave it to me doesn't remember where she bought it years ago.

Although the leaves don't resemble Diospyros I will look at this genus more closely.

It might be worth investigating the laurel family (Lauraceae) It has about 2500 species, with many in the tropical Americas.
It also has a prominent yellowish midvein, glossy green alternate leaves and acutely pointed apex. The leaves are often aromatic.

Have you taken in a leaf group to the nursery? If they are no help you might try the extension office.

Could it be an Asimina sp? Or some other Annonaceae?
