Have a Clever Idea??

Kristi beat me to it with her ice cube tray, but I was taking some photos of ideas that I thought would help my Amaryllis buddies.

In the background is a wire hoop for hanging orchid baskets in trees. My friend gave me a few and I use them upside down clipping them to the edge of clay pots, the hoop helps support Amaryllis leaves.

To the left the top of a water or soda bottle cut off and setting atop the soil with the leaves pulled through the bottles neck. This helps to support small baby seedlings leaves and also limits the amount of rain getting to the soil in the rainy season.

Very clever with the upper-half bottle to hold the bulbs for Maria's soak! I will definitely use it.

I am trying rebar with tops and will let you know how it turns out. I found several wooden tool handles for cheap at a garage sale, and have bought 2 ft rebar in size that fits snugly into the hole in the tool handle (which I painted a dark green). I have also considered buying old tools, old crowbars, etc but have not found cheap enough. The trick in my yard seems to be getting something I can sink deep enough---into the rocky clay layer beneath the good soil--so they won't bend over when hose drags--and still have enough height for hose which may ride up a bit--which is why I am trying the 2-ft rebar. I plan to use some epoxy, but am still afraid the "tops" will pop off the rebar if the hose rides up.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I did post to the kitchen forum but didn't receive much response. I put the range in the island because in a past kitchen I had the range against a wall and I didn't like that this left my back to the room for much of the time during meal preparation. Ventilation shouldn't be an issue with a Modernaire hood. It'll be one of the lower profile designs so as not to intrude in the view. The aisles are wide (4'6) so I'm hopeful we won't bump into each other too much. Due to being a remodel on existing foundation, we are somewhat constrained where certain elements are, so if I want the cleanup sink under a window, that's pretty much the only place for it. I'd rather not do dishes staring at a blank wall. Yes a table at the bench. It will be a smaller one.

Lynn: really like your idea as well - at least they are hidden. Part of the reason for not having the sleeping pillows on the bed is they are not that great looking. We have TempurPedic pillows and the pillowcases don't fit them really well so there's a lot of material around that stick out at the sides and could show with deco pillows in front - don't really know yet. I don't want to spend a lot of time doing my bed either. Trisha: throwing them on the bedside rug is not an option. Lynn and Terriks: First, we won't have too much wall space due to a lot of glass for the view and don't want the TV in front of any of the glass. But, I don't plan to spend a lot of time doing work stuff in the bedroom and if I do occasionally I can listen to the news and if there is something interesting to watch I can stop for a few minutes. I think of my bedroom as a place to go away from work and chores and to relax - read,watch TV, sleep. In fact, I will need to put on ear phones when DH is in bed if he wants to read. Ironing and other chores will usually be done in the kitchen, family room, or outside. Thanks for all your ideas - Cheers!

Everybody ha a different opinion on this My KD insists that the best look (and this guy is from a super high end kitchen firm---talking $500K and up kitchens--believe it or not)---is to have space above the cabinet and ceiling--and then to light that space with indirect lighting--low voltage or even fluorescent (it supposedly looks good up there depending on wall paint color) His opinion is that it give the room an amazingly bigger feel--more volume than one would imagine Therefore---I'm blowing out a ceiling--raising a header---to achieve a 9'9" ceiling !! and going with 42" wall cabs--thus a total cab height of about 8'---thus an air space above to ceiling of 1'8" Has anyone else had this open air above cab advice?

Hey Jan, did you notice that float bulb has our friend 'barb c's name on the bottle??? That's one she gave me last lunch meet! lol

Xuan, I came by this idea quite accidentially, I had left some baby bulbs my friend barb had given me on my potting bench. I use the lower part of water bottles to grow seedlings or to also use as mini greenhouse toppers upside down over baby tomato seedlings. We had got some rain and the baby bulbs I left on the bench got soaked. I was potting up some tomato seedlings and took a bottle top I had just cut and turned it upside down for the bulbs to dry in, in the sun while I finished with my tomatoes. Then a light bulb went on! hah!! I could do the "MariaBulbFloat" this way!! See, that Maria is also the mother of amaryllis inventions!

Nice use of disposable items, Cindee! I come across water bottles every once in a while, though we don't normally buy bottled water... I have this thing about paying for something that should be free! Anyway... I'll have to try that for my root soaking!

Necessity is the mother of invention, they say... and so is accidental, it seems like! I've found a few new ideas either by accident or need, myself!

Update on the rootless broken bulblet in the inverted water bottle top. Once a few roots started growing, I moved her to a small well draining pot with soil and lots of perlite. I sunk just the neck with tiny roots in the soil and filled the upper portion of the plastic with perlite. I watered into the pot and not the plastic top. Take a look at the roots and size of the bulblet 3 mos later with this method!!

I cleaned her up and planted her in a BIG GIRL pot to stretch out her new roots. I am using this method with all my rootless bulbs and bulblets from now on.
