Pining for late season bulbs?

Hi - just in case you feel that you neeeed more bulbs and are worried that the late season ones are too big a risk, I thought I'd let you know about the beautiful bulbs I just got. I ordered 3 Sweet Lillians and 3 Mistys from American Meadows the other day - I just had to do it! I had given the Sweet Lillians I got in the Yahoo co-op away as a gift, and the Mistys I got turned out to be Susans, so I was really feeling bummed... especially after seeing everyone's beautiful pictures.

I decided to give the ones from American Meadows a try and I'm glad I did. The order arrived really quickly via FedEx, it was incredibly well packed, and the bulbs look gorgeous. And the best part: it's the cheapest price I paid for bulbs all season. I'm looking forward to getting these beauties in pots!

Just though I'd let you all know in case you're itching for more blooms.

Googled Sweet Lillian because I couldn't recall seeing one. Very beautiful! Hope they all do well for you. I have a Misty that's dormant and can't wait for her to wake up.

I didn't find anything at all on the site re: Hippeastrums. Are you sure you wanted this in posted in the Hippi forum and not the Bulbs forum? There were early, late etc. designations for tulips on the site. Here is a link that might be useful: bulbs

I have nine pepper plants growing in my basement under artificial light. 3 Bhut Jolokia, 2 Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, 2 Trinidad Douglah, a Orange Habanero Suave, and a yellow Bhut Jolokia. When the night-time temps fall below 55, the flowers will not produce and will possibly fall off. Same will happen with immature fruits. So I brought them in a few weeks ago. Some of them doubled in size in that short amount of time. It probably helps that the room gets up around 80 degrees when the lights are on and drops to the lower 60's at night. I had them on a metal halide for 18 hours a day and switched to the HPS bulb a couple weeks ago and dropped the photoperiod down to 12/12. Make sure your plants have plenty of calcium. Peppers need it. I give them a dose of that with their regular fertilizer every couple weeks. I just bought an Apollo Horticulture GLK400GW19 400w grow light on Amazon for this season and it is amazing. For $125, it is an AWESOME deal. It puts out 36,000 lumens with the MH lamp and 56,000 with the HPS. A Home Depot florescent will only put out about 1,000. I also have some decent T5 florescents that pump out 5,000 lumens. I got those for around $30 a pop. Another decent deal is the Hydrofarm 125w compact florescent. I believe that puts out around 8,000 lumens. All I know is -- don't look directly at the bulb like I did. ;)

Thanks for the compliments and, um, "sympathy" (smile). It's good to hear other GW friends admit to being crazy, Katie, and I happen to think it's a good kind of crazy. I mean, truly insane gardeners like us don't need to come inside when it starts raining either (like today). I'm glad (and surprised) that daffodils do well in the desert, though come to think of it a lot of bulbs evolved in high deserts in Turkey and such. You might try the low botanical tulips that are the size and timing of crocus, as they like it dry. You're right, Sharon, by this point I can just dig and replace the bulbs by now to plant the rest of the roses, but for me it doesn't really help fall planting. I just dig where I know not enough bulbs will survive, and again in the fall, if I dig up a bulb to plant another one I just replace it and move on. Carol, it sounds like we have a new convert to bulbs and roses, and Canada should be a good place to mingle those, as JJPeace can testify. Cadiarose, I do appreciate the work of keeping up with both obsessions, and I agree that if I had to choose I'd pick the roses. However, self-sustaining bulbs like crocus or daffodils don't really take any work once planted, and they can be at the back of the bed so you can forget about them once the roses start. Rhonda, still no monarchs? I read somewhere that their numbers have increased, but apparently not where you are or I am. At least you have those beautiful queens! I just received my new MW plants in the mail that I ordered from Pine Ridge Gardens in Arkansas. She operates her small nursery primarily for the benefit of nature, and she says the reason many of her plants arrive with imperfections is she uses no pesticides. Tom, you know how when you walk through weeds by the edges of woods at this time of year, you get those 'stick tights' (triangular shaped seeds that stick to your clothes) all over you? Those seeds come from Desmodium plants, a member of the pea family that the LTSs around here use. I've raised them myself on it. Here's a caterpillar whose picture I made a few months ago - Yes, I did get more monarchs last year, even had the privilege of raising a batch of them myself in late summer. Unfortunately, the female didn't leave me any eggs or cats this year. Mary, I thought the same thing myself, that the blue area looks like feathers. Most skippers are so plainly colored, the long-tailed skippers are a treat! My husband is hanging in there, that's about all I can say. I finally told my nurse practitioner about GI problems I've had for years, she sent me to a GI specialist, I had an upper endoscopy, and it seems I have a huge hiatal hernia that will probably need surgery and an esophageal stricture. The doctor enlarged the stricture, so now I'm eating better. I had gotten down to mostly ice cream and yogurt. This little health problem is why I haven't answered on this thread until now. Gardenfullofswallowtails, monarchs are a good bit bigger than viceroys. I haven't seen any viceroys this year, unfortunately. jtmath2, congrats on releasing the viceroy! Sherry

I almost took the plunge, Sweet Lilian is on my list, and my Misty also turned out to be Susan, but I have to save some room for a possible Mcguires order!! Am greatly looking forward to that!!! Am starting to bring up bulbs that have been waiting out the winter in a paper bag in the furnace room and there are more than I remember....about 15 more(!!).....and they all are huge and look good,.... is there no end to this?

I got some bulbs for my birthday from a couple of Ebayers. I knew it was risky, but I'm a first year, and the price was good. All $9 or less.

Bulbs from one of the two sellers were firm, good sized, had fleshy roots, and are potted up and already putting out scape tips. I'll be thrilled if they are what the label says! I picked up Royal Velvet (my first red), Double Record, and Bogata.

My one concern is that Bogata is labeled Bogata / Floris Hekker ????

The bulbs from the other seller are more problematic. All the roots were dead, the necks on two were very soft and I ended up cutting them open and removing a layer of rot.

I broke down and bought some rooting gel and have painted the basal plates of these in the infirmary. I'm planning to pot them up today. They've been sitting out while I make sure they are dry, and no more rot.

So fingers crossed for Charisma and Dancing Queen.

Donna, no, sorry, there's no end to it - lol! (btw, the bulb you sent me has the nose of a scape coming up.)

Genez, hope those problem bulbs work out for you. Let us know what you think of that rooting gel. I've seen it advertised but haven't purchased any.

Alana, Which one is peeking through, they should both bloom for you, my Ebay bulb has 2 buds poking through but doesn't seem to want to go any further. I'm in contact with someone else who bought this same bulb on Ebay and her's has bloomed and she says it's beautiful. I'm hoping she will send me some pictures! The noid should bloom for you, I think I'll ask the forum for a possible ID for that one. There are 2 buds on 1 FireCracker(!) and a bud poking up on Red Charm, looking good!! Thanks!

Genez, I'm guessing the first 3 bulbs you bought on Ebay were from G in Fla. I bought one from her it was mislabeled but she offered (without my asking), to send me another one and it came promptly and both (first one turned out Red Lion instead of Rainbow....which is growing nicely but hasn't bloomed yet) bulbs were very good quality, so if you have a mislabel, I'm sure she will stand by it! Good Luck with the others!!

Donna, it's the eBay bulb that's promising a scape. How exciting about yours getting ready to bloom, too. Shouldn't be long now.
