Can I plant Winter Greens over my Newly Planted Garlic Bed?
Comments (6)Thank you for the follow up post (laceyvail) but I don't feel like that answered my question. I know its late but gardening is about trial & error? Most of the "Greens" I am planning on planting can survive on less than 10 hours of daylight. In Mass, I still have 10 hours of daylight until mid November and then I never have less than 9 hours even up to the winter solstice so although I agree that my greens will not be their best I do believe they will grow, even getting them in this late. I could get lucky and not see a heavy prolonged freeze for some time. Its a roll of the dice I'm willing to try for a few seeds in trays. What I'm not willing to roll the dice on is ruining my 2015 Garlic crop. So back to my original question: Can I plant on top of my newly seeded garlic? or (to ask a different way), will the roots of leafy greens adversely affect my 2015 Garlic crop, which is planted at a depth of 6-8 inches? Looking forward to hearing from the GW community. Thanks again in advance....See MoreGreenhouse or Garage? Keeping plants alive through winter.

Comments (6)I mean, they LOOK like sempervivum! LOL But I have no way of knowing whether they're some sort of hybrid or something. Last year I filled it up with what were labeled as Blacks, Royal Rubies, Cobweb Buttons, and then added a Blue Heron echeveria, Ice Plant, and Lemon Ball. I moved those last three to the greenhouse and left the first 3 in the pot, but they all died. For drainage, I drilled about 20 holes through the cement (I think the bit is 3/8", but it could be 1/4"), and the soil is a mix of potting soil and perlite (I think I did 60% soil 40% perlite, but I can't swear to that). Everything seemed great through the warm months so I don't think that drainage is an issue? I didn't buy new sempervivum this year, I just put the Lemon Ball and Ice Plant back in. They all did well, but it's getting close to time for me to put them in the greenhouse....See MoreWinterizing Strawberry Plants Raised Bed
Comments (0)I have a raised bed with strawberry plants on my apartment balcony and need winterizing advice. They are ever bearing plants and I haven't cut them down. I plan to use hay to cover them for the winter. I'm in Zone 6a and I was planning on covering them in about early November, but we're supposed to get freezing temps in a few days. Will the freezing temps kill them before it's time to cover them? Do I cut them down at all this late? They have big leaves currently. And since it's in a raised bed on my balcony, do I need to put anything under the raised bed? (I can access underneath as the raised bed has like small wide legs). Any advice is appreciated!...See Morexman
