Are scarlet runner beans brown when they sprout?

It looks like the 7 beans (that I started, pulled out & dried overnight, then stuck them back in their container the next day) decided to sprout after all. But the first one looks sick. It's a brownish/tannish/greenish color. Is this normal for those?

This was closest I could find for seedling image. The thing is huge. Haven't started mine yet but at least I know what they look like now.

Runner beans will rot if too wet. I sow them indoors in April or outdoors in late May and water only sparingly. Do not presoak as they risk rotting. Don't winter sow. They need warmth. If you can get them started it may be possible to get a crop as they grow very fast in warm conditions. Mine started cropping about three weeks ago and it's been about 60f here. No way has the soil been 65 - 70! You could also consult the legumophiles on the Bean, pea and legume forum.

Yup...beans are beans and warm soil is what they need :) Bonnie, your Okra may be up but it's going to sit around for a long time not doing too much. Okra needs REALLY warm temps and the warmer the better; best growth is around 95F. I'll be waiting this year, as I've been in a hurry and planting them too early (May 11-15th)...the results have been stumped growth and sickly unproductive plants. Nutrients were not the issue...too cool soil and air temps were. It's supposed to be best planted 3-4 weeks past the last frost date. Night time temps need to be above 50F. This is one crop (besides peppers) that I'm going to give a little more patience with so to stop wasting good garden space! Cool soil and air temps are a major cause for Okra not growing properly. Ctnchpr, I already bought Scarlet Runner Bean seeds to plant next spring but have been wondering what support to use. Reading that 7' wasn't even enough is kind of scary...LOL. What shape and material is your trellis made of? I've been surfing the net for trellises and there are so many shapes and materials. Wondering if I need wood or sturdier metal to hold up the Scarlet Runner Bean vine. Seems like Bamboo trellises are reasonably priced and read they're sturdy. Just don't know what shape is best...wall, tee-pee, obelisk, fan, etc. I'm not handy in the least so I'll be buying whatever I end up using for Scarlet Runner Bean and, after seeing your photo, trying a Cypress Vine. Thanks in advance for any advice you could offer.

They are self pollinating.They can be hand pollinated too.Pick up one flower and rub it face to face with rest of the flowers.These flowers are really eye catching beauties. I am posting a pic.of Scarlet runner bean with beautiful flower from my file.

great photo, but nope, I don't have that lovely green coloring. Looks like mine was dipped in cheap milk chocolate. I better start another batch when the weather warms up some...

Mine are just starting to break the soil. They are not frost tolerant at all. I waited until after Easter in zone 7.
