Will scarlet runner bean grow - 4ft high chain fence?

As far as I know, hummingbirds do not stay in my area to nest, but they do pass through as they migrate up north for the summer, then again in the fall when they go back down south. I spied 2 (or the same one twice) checking out my yard (glads, snaps, petunias) on 2 different Saturdays, the third week of August. I would like to know if I plant some scarlet runner beans for them next summer, will the vines grow horizontally along the length of a fence 4 feet in height, or will the vines get all sloppy and try to find something to grab higher than the fence? (of which there is nothing for the vines to grab higher than the fence).

My other thought is to try to grow some beans in a large pot near some spruce trees I have, would they vine up that? I would just like to have something planted that could give them a feed or two should some pass through again next summer. I will look for seeds of Lady in Red salvia, I have some room to plant that also.

kioni, I grew some scarlet runner beans on a 7' trellis this year. The runners grew past the top of the trellis, wrapped around each other until they couldn't support their weight, fell down, then grew up again - no horizontal growth.

If I could suggest an alternative - I also grew Cypress vine (Hiedra colorada) this year, and my hummers love it!! And IMO, the foliage & flowers are more attractive.

I have about a gazillion Lady in Red seeds (and still collecting), so if you haven't found any by Spring, send me an e-mail, and I'll mail you some.

Thank you for the photo and suggestions, and the offer of the seeds. Most seeds are packed away for now in the stores here, so I'm not sure if Lady in Red Salvia is carried, but I do plan to look for it in the spring, along with that cypress vine. Wow, is that ever striking. I searched for it on the internet, it is some type of morning glory? My mom grows the blue varieties, if she knew this was out there....I couldn't find out if that would do as well in my zone, but there is a way to find out, right? (Grow it and see!)

My Runner Beans only gave me one plant from the pack that I planted. It is about one foot high and has scarlet flowers which was one of the reasons I wanted to grow it. Any tips for better germination. Will this plant grow tall based on the fact that it is flower at such a low hight?

I read somewhere that the fastest growing perennial vine is the Dutchman's Pipe. It will, apparently, cover a screen in the first year. The flowers smell awful though. You could weave just about any kind of stripping that you liked through the fence, angled, corner to corner. I would go with something natural looking. I think there are a lot of choices out there that look like wood or bamboo. It would give you time to get some vines growing on it too for added privacy. You could use the stuff lawn chairs use to be woven with. We used to live beside a chain link walk-through. I lined it with little wild lilacs my first summer there about 1.5' apart. By the time we moved 14 years later, we had all the privacy we needed. I trimmed them back a lot on our side to give us space. The flowers were Heavenly! I have also rooted a couple of large weeping willow branches in front of a chainlink fence and wove the branches through the fence as it grew. After a few years the trunk will pull the fence out of the ground, so that's not really a good option for a fence that's permanent. You could weave cut willow branches through it, however. That might look quite good. I have used Virginia creeper too but it takes a couple of years to start taking off.

Hi Lazygardens, Wow!!! Ur garden pics are just awesome. My tomatoes are growing fast. they r nearly 10" in height, with flowers just starting to bloom. My eggplant are the light green, round 3" diameter and 6" length variety (Indian), it is 6" high with flowers just starting to bloom. My okra are having 2 true set of leaves... :) My drip system for the veggies is not set as yet, so I hose water them twice a day for 10 minutes by hand. So is the watering enough? Please do let me know coz I really want my plants to grow healthy. This weekend we will be installing the soaker hose for the veggie plants. Is 10 minutes on the timer, set twice daily too much or too little? Any advice would be of great help. I live in Ocotillo/Gilbert, Chandler. Padma

Here are the IWK beans and the rustic trellis I built for them. I am getting my first flowers. You might see that some of the leaves look really bad. I planted last october and they grew OK, but then completely stopped growth. They did not grow at all for about 3 months. They also seem to be afflicted with something (? not sure what?) and I really thought I was going to lose them. Ever since the spring equinox we got small fresh leaves that started to sprout/grow and they are looking much better. I even got my first flowers. I am really curious if anyone has observed this apparent sensitivity to day length? I suppose for me the best would be to plant on the winter solstice? or a bit after? In case you are curious it is celery, parsley and cilantro interplanted with them.

Ctnchpr, I already bought Scarlet Runner Bean seeds to plant next spring but have been wondering what support to use.

Reading that 7' wasn't even enough is kind of scary...LOL.

What shape and material is your trellis made of?

I've been surfing the net for trellises and there are so many shapes and materials.

Wondering if I need wood or sturdier metal to hold up the Scarlet Runner Bean vine.

Seems like Bamboo trellises are reasonably priced and read they're sturdy. Just don't know what shape is best...wall, tee-pee, obelisk, fan, etc.

I'm not handy in the least so I'll be buying whatever I end up using for Scarlet Runner Bean and, after seeing your photo, trying a Cypress Vine.

Thanks in advance for any advice you could offer.

I grew the beans in my garden on a basic frame - nothing ornamental. Two 4"X4" pressure treated posts/Two 2"X4" stringers/covered with light gauge welded wire fencing.

Two solutions:

1) Weave the shoots through the fence.

2) (much easier) When the leading shoot reaches the top of the fence, pinch it out to force lateral growth lower down.

I have been growing them in a bed right next to screened in porch. I gave them fishing line to climb up. They grew almost all the way to the roof of our house. This year I will be trying them in a bed with a 4-6 ft. high handicap ramp to climb up. I will try cutting main stem and see if it will branch out horizontally.
