pegoda dogwood - too much sun?

Unable to get the Dogwood I really wanted, the garden centre suggested a Pagoda Dogwood, saying the only requirement was partial shade. I explained the spot was surrounded by 100 foot spruce and maples on one side but that it would have full sun from about 2:00ish to dusk and was told ok. It flowered alright, but soon after the leaves became yellowish with brown tips and edges. An entire branch died, which I removed but am still not certian if due to an insect attack or not. QUESTION: Is 5 hours of full sun too much for a Pegoda? Shall I transplant to a spot with some cool morning sun and filtered afternoon sun or a spot with only filtered sun instead? It is only 6 mos in ground so roots are not spread yet. Are either more suited. I do not want to lose it.

The only requirement is that the soil is well drained.

Pagoda can tolerate full sun in its native range. Mine is in 11 hours of sun during the peak length of daylight. 5 hours is nothing and honestly not too much sun for just about any plant in zone 5.

It will be happier in partial shade...5 hours is perfect.

if it was planted this year [i see 6 months now] ... then its roots were interrupted.. and it would not surprise me that there was leaf damage in the high heat of summer.. july/august ..

you provide nothing to indicate a bug problem ... pretend that is not an issue .... because i doubt it is .. but a pic might help

water very deeply.. here in fall ... but insure total drainage before winter ...

and make sure you water deeply.. but infrequently during the heat of summer next year .. let it nearly dry in between DEEP waterings.. insert finger and learn how water moves in your soil ... water when it needs it.. not when its easy for you .... YOU HAVE TO INSURE WATER IS GETTING DOWN WHERE THE ROOTS ARE GROWING ... not just a little leaf spraying ...

most likely.. the maples are complicating the water issue by stealing all available water .... and the other large mature trees are not helping ...

a pic sure might change my mind ...

and who knows about the limb.. could have been damage from digging.. transporting.. anything .... most likely apples and oranges to the leaf issue ...

where are you.. and what was summer like?? .. here south of ann arbor.. 8-9 weeks near 100 degrees .. and no rain ... EVERYTHING .. all trees and shrubs .. 10 years min in the gorund .. are showing leaf damage .... what about your actual weather this summer???

finally .. with any tree i ever planted.. my only concern.. the first 2 years .. is that it lives.. it will get pretty later ... and all it needs for those years .. is PROPER WATER .... do not fertilize it ...

moving it again.. will only set it back further ... if you like the spot.. leave it there ...

i am guessing.. patience is your best advice ...

It's a very recent introduction, so I'm not sure you'll find too many gardeners with much experience with it.....not enough of a track record :-) IME, other similar selections of C. sanguinea ('Winter Fire', 'Winter Flame') offer the maximum appeal in winter when their flame colored stems are visible - the in-season foliage and appearance is somewhat underwhelming. In addition to its more compact habit, Arctic Sun offers bright, almost golden foliage, which IMO would add considerably to its appeal. Better fall color, too. There are other dwarf twig dogwoods to chose from depending on your requirements. Cornus stolonifera 'Farrow' (trademark name Arctic Flame) is a very compact red twig dogwood as is the older selection 'Kelseyi'. I really like the look of Cornus alba 'Cream Cracker', a dwarf selection comparable to 'Elegantissima' or 'Bailhalo' (Ivory Halo) with creamy edge variegation on grey-green foliage. All of these should stay in the 3-4' range, about half or less the size of other twig dogwoods. For more info, try a search under the registered name - Cornus sanguinea 'Cato' - rather than the trademarked Arctic Sun.

In that case, the maples species in question is likely Red Maple (A. rubrum) or possibly Silver Maple (A. saccharinum) which is less tolerant of standing water. Unfortunately, the area is NOT suitable for Flowering Dogwood (C. florida or kousa), regardless of light as it is far too wet. As for other small flowering trees, soil type, duration of flooding, and flooding season will determine your possible choices.

I'm hopeful it will not leaf scorch this summer but it is still early to tell and the tress is certainly still stressed. Glad to hear that they DO take a while to establish as this one certainly also did have a stressful first year. Large root cut off that was girdling, before that it was pulled out of the ground after two weeks of planting because discovered the girdling as the tree was planted too deeply in it's own root ball and I had to lift it up to properly expose the root flare. I also gave it a very harsh trimming of lots of happy low branches and foliage. The watering tree bag has helped this year but I also see in this heavy heat now the bag can do damage as it keeps the trunk too wet at the base and makes too much insect activity. I also have seen the tree borer waspy little creature around the tree. I hope that the Kousa does not have trouble with that down the road after this stress. The wild dogwood this Kousa replaced with sickly and infested with the borers so the insect is kind of familiar with my yard and still hangs around. I know I have to be patient with the tree and not over think about it.

Chances are, the security lighting won't be close enough to have an impact on your plants. Light isn't the only factor involved in plant growth.... Temperature, water, fertilizers, also influence growth. Light given off by street, security and landscape lighting, in most cases, is not intense enough to be an issue. But, you might find some maple, also dogwood, sensitive to security lighting, can sometimes depend on which plants.
