What kind of Oak Tree is this?

Would you guys be so kind and tell me what kind of oak tree this is? I've tried to do my own research and I can't seem to narrow it down. I was thinking a pin or black oak?? I'm very new at this.

leaves appear too broad for pin oak so IMHO more likely northern red oak (quercus rubra) or perhaps black oak (q. velutina).

It's not Black oak, it's either Scarlet Oak, Pin Oak, or Shumard Oak. My first guess would have been Pin Oak from the leaves. But some Shumard Oaks usually have that branch crown. Scarlet Oak usually has more dark colored and fissured bark, especially on branches and the leaves don't look as close to that IMO. So I think it's likely between Pin Oak and Shumard Oak. More likely Pin Oak because Shumard Oak usually has larger "bulk" at the top center of the leaf. Some Pin Oaks don't have great fall color and others can have great fall color. How big are the acorns? Pin Oaks have small acorns and Shumard Oak has large sized acorns.

I believe it's semi evergreen, the trunk is dark and has deep scales, open spread, someone said it looks like a bottomland post oak, but the acorns are bigger and the branches aren't twisted like a post oak

ken_adrian- it was planted about 10 months ago. I have been wondering if I should remove it. I read if you leave them on past a year it can damage the trunk...Not sure about that accuracy. Just trying to learn :)

The bark looks almost Shumard-like.

tpurgason, while I cannot identify it, you can definitely rule out Pin Oak and Red Oak--it is definitely NOT either of those.

Also, you should definitely remove all that staking if the tree has established itself- which by now one hopes it has! If you push/wiggle firmly on the trunk and the rootball still moves, then staking is required. But assuming the location is good, and the tree has been cared for, it should be rooted in now and not require any staking whatsoever. Leaving it on can damage it.

I am gonna have to agree with Georgeinbandonoregon, It looks like my Red (Q. Rubra) or Q. Velutina (black oak). If your leaves are still as the picture shows, (GREEN and intact) if there is some small amount of fuzz under the leaves. just enough to feel when you rub the underleaf. It may be Q. Velutina. The Velutina (black oak) usually has crappy fall color compared to Red oak (Q. Rubra). But to tell you the truth, a tree I had long since ID'ed as Velutina has shown some reddish hues this fall. But, really we have only recently had a frost worth mentioning, last night actually. Trees that usually color intensly have been a big yawn, so far anyway. The Velutina is said to have some orange in the trunk color, but yours has "baby bark" and I'm assuming is not mature enough to help with the ID, unless someone knows something i don't.

Thank you all so kindly for your advice and helping me narrow it down.

I will remove the staking since I do believe it has properly rooted.

I'll do some more research on red and black oaks and see if I can pin point it more. poaky1-Thank you for the leave test info!! I will check it out and see!

Being in Texas, I would almost guarantee it to be either Shumard or Texas red oak. (Quercus shumardii, or Quercus buckleyi)

well, the whole red oak thing is apparently a complete mess as to who is named who (taxonomy is confused) and further complicated by potential hybridization between closely related species AND the possibility that non-native red oaks are likely being sold and planted in many parts of the state. the final complication is that young trees may not necessarily have "typical" foliage so may even be harder still to make a "firm" i.d., LOL. just to confuse to thing even more to me the leaves look somewhat like q. nuttallii (a largely east texas species, apparently)!!!!!!!!!!!!!
