Next Season?? I just received 3 roses in the past couple of weeks. And they're itty bitty babies. I'm trying to stay focused on my "already here" new roses so I can enjoy the process of their growth. But now you've gone and introduced that subject again, and I'll be off and fantasizing about my ideal garden if space were no limit. I'm pretty well maxed out in my tiny yard. As it is, I crowd the bushes too much.

I would like to try something grafted on fortuniana, just to see how fortuniana does here.

You can get bands of Louise Estes from Almost Heaven Roses.

I ordered Parole aka Buxom Beauty from Pickering--multiflora rootstock produces large root systems in our soil.

I'm booting some BS disasters to make room for about 3 roses, so of course I ordered about 4 times that amount.

Tamora is the only apricot rose I have, and she needs company. Trying to decide which-- Apricot Nectar, Medallion, Sunset Celebration, Winter Sunset, Prairie Sunrise. All probably too blackspot-prone, sigh. For the arboretum's no-spray bed: Carefree Beauty, Earth Song, Lovely Fairy, Belinda's Dream, and Basye's Blueberry. And we might take a chance on Dublin Bay.

Barbara, Prairie Sunrise is not too BS prone; some of the other Bucks are worse in my garden. Check out Folksinger; another apricot Buck. It blooms more than PS for me and is very healthy also.

Pickering has "What a Peach" on its highly disease resistant list. It has a big Spring flush--then a light continuous bloom of mini flowers. It might be grown as a climber--it likes to throw out long canes in the Fall.

Hoovb -"I would like to try something grafted on fortuniana" My Angel Face finished the year at 65"T and 85" Wide and Gemini was 66"Tx60"Wide. I had to cut some of the side growth off on Gemini. I water with sprinklers and the blooms got too heavy for a couple of the canes and loaded them down too much. These are both on fortuniana rootstock though. Angel Face is one of the first to bloom in the season and by Sept blooms non stop through the end of the season. This year I still have a few blooms right now.

Mike, I think you'll really like Always A Lady and Dancing Flame.

I'm pretty full up, I only got Disneyland and Purple Tiger coming in Feb and to put those in I'm pulling out a 2nd Iceberg and a huge lavender plant.

Beth I can't wait to come to your house next year and see exactly where you put all these amazing roses you order. I'm sure you have it all figured out based on the many gorgeous photos we see of your happy roses.

I hope you love Caramel Antike. I really enjoyed mine this year even with it being new. Now it is planted and I am looking forward to seeing what it can do come spring. I'm extremely curious to see how Pumpkin Patch does for you.

I only have ten on order so far unless I want to remove the front yard. Or what's left of it. I'm not ruling that out completely as an option.

Hi there, I was looking at all your lists, and lists :)... and I noticed that none of you ordered from Heirloom Roses and I wondered if there was a reason for this. Also, I live quite close to Rogue Valley Roses but have not ordered from them and I was wondering if you guys are happy with their product. Thanks in advance for input. Kat

kitkat, a number of us did order from Heirloom when they had their last big sale but I'm sorry to say my roses aren't really growing much at all. I've heard others have had good experiences. Rogue Valley is a great vendor that also carries a lot of old roses, and people on the antique rose forum do order from there quite a bit. The lady who runs the nursery is wonderful and the service is great. They are a quality outfit in my opinion.

You ask a good question. I have in the past up to including this summer purchased roses from Heirloom. Mine have grown very well. I would not hesitate to buy from them again. I've actually had the best luck buying from them either in the spring or during the summer though. Their little bands are too delicate for fall planting IMHO.

I haven't bought from Rogue Valley Roses yet. I'm sure that day will come. I'd love to get Golden Buddha from them:)

I ordered for the first time from Rogue Valley this year because they are the sole source for the two roses I wanted. I hesitated to have roses shipped cross country but they packed the roses very well and they arrived in great shape. I bought bands so I repotted into 1gal pots and they are thriving in my coldframe for the winter. I would order from them again.

I order the majority of my roses from Ashdown Roses because they are also great to work with and their climate is similar to mine so I have a better guage of what roses will work in my area. And of course shipping costs are allways a factor and they close enough to me that if I have a long weekend and feel like a road trip, I can hop in my car and visit the nursery.

I am a firm believer in buying from the small independent owner-operated nurseries.

I have not been at the forum in such a long time, and must say I missed coming around.
For some reason just after spring 08, and summer came, my gardening spirit just left me for a few months.

That is it for now for rose ordering(and I mean it this time)
There is just No more space.
What I need to do next spring is to move roses around, a bit too clutter.
I have 100 roses and some need space to breathe.

Just got back from Jacksonville, Florida and had a couple days off left before returning to work, so I decided to check in.

Beth -- You're Paul Gaugin is still on back order at Hortico, along with mine. I put in 3 orders from them this year totalling 31 roses (which includes 7 that I received but that failed to break dormancy last year and which they are replacing at no cost). On Dec. 3, they sent me a "confirmation" of my order and said it would ship out on Dec. 15, And, of course, all of the roses are still shown as available now on the Hortico website. Today they called me and said of my 31 roses, only 11 would be available to ship out on December 15, and that this is their only remaining ship date to the US for the year. The other 20 (including Paul Gaugin) are now backordered, again.

I chose to hold off until January for the whole lot of 'em, rather than pay double shipping costs (which was what they were proposing). At least they didn't hit my credit card early this time.

But, it's still maddening. "Available" on their website does not necessarily mean the roses are "available" at all. It means "we might get these roses in someday."

And Hortico seems to be getting worse than in the past, in my considered opinion.

Thanks for the heads up Kathy. I wasn't expecting to get PAUL GAUGUIN at all anyway!! Wonder what I will get in the Dec 15th batch. I haven't heard form Debbie yet what's going to be available. I just got one batch a few days ago. One that was "supposed" to be in there is back on the backorder list again.. TABRIZ. Did finally get my HELLO DOLLY!! Missed out on that one last yr when they shipped out a box that UPS lost somewhere around Oakland. They replaced all the other roses, but were sold out of HD.

In this batch, I got a replacement for a rose I got in the spring that was mismarked. Ordered Kordes' HT FORTUNA and got the shrub version FORTUNA (VIGOROSA) instead. Looks like the replacement that came is the Vigorosa version again. Lots of tiny stems and 1/4" hips in tact. Doesn't look like any HT I've ever seen!!

Whatever I get from Hortico in the Dec 15th batch, that's all I'm going to do. I have many roses on my backorder list, many for several yrs. I think after this, I'll cancel the rest.
