Duchesse de Brabant

Hello to all!! Does anyone grow this rose and if so could you please tell me if it would survive and prosper in a zone 5 setting? Also would it do well in an area that only gets 3 hours of sunshine a day and how is it for disease resistance? Thanks for your help,greatly appreciated.

I've been growing Duchesse de Brabant in the ground. I planted a Duchesse in spring of 2006. It survived its first winter.

I transplanted it this past autumn. The root system was in very good condition when I transplanted it.

It's too soon to tell how it will do over the long run, but I'm optimistic that it can be grown as a small bedding rose.

Three hours of sun doesn't sound like enough. In a cold zone I'd think you'd want it to get lots of sun to keep it as healthy as possible.

I found that it can get some blackspot late in the season.

For Duchesse to be happy she needs LOTS of sun and warmth. Golly Ken, you might consider putting something other than a rose in that dark spot. Most roses need 6 hours of sun to bloom well-- the less sun, the less blooms. To control disease I find it really helps if the sun gets to the rose early in the day.

Yep, both of mine were slow starters. Now I have a new test of patience-- Dr. Grill. Looks like it'll be one of those which grows sideways at first. And William R Smith even slower; in fact I may go ahead and put him in the ground to see if he likes that better. OTOH I am impressed with G. Nabonnand which has grown quickly, alarmingly so. I thought I'd allowed a LOT of space but he will need every inch.

Thanks everyone. I've alway wondered what the fuss was about Duchesse de Brabant. She always bloomed a lot, but those blooms were nothing special. NOW I get it! Just two months ago she was the embarrassment of my garden. Now she's covered in an embarrassment of riches! I had no idea her blooms could be so frilly and perfect. Ingrid, mine is actually blooming from top to bottom. She's loaded with blooms and still making more. I'm falling for her a little more each day. I can certainly see why she's one of your favorites, Carol. If she keeps this up, she'll be one of mine, too. Funny that your Georgetown Tea also needed more H2O, Sheila. I guess "Earthkind" applies more to Texas? Boy, Duchesse de Brabant is definitely worth that extra water! Lisa

Thanks for the lovely compliments, Jin and Comtesse! Sorry about jumping into your thread without mentioning how lovely your Duchesse de Brabant is, Caflowerluver. Jin, yours is looking fabulous too. It’s grown so much, and is blooming like gang busters! I had AT&T here all afternoon yesterday, installing my Direct TV. They sent over another man, who was “here to go over my plan” with me. He managed to talk me into switching my wireless phone over over. I was very hesitant, but he pretty much had me when he said the new IPhone XR had a way better camera and had 4 times the storage capacity as my current phone. I’m always filling my phone with rose and flower pictures. lol I also managed to get him to agree to set everything up on the new phone, and make sure I was comfortable with it before I agreed. As soon as I had it in my hands, I insisted on posting a picture to the forum to see if it worked properly. Caflowerluver, your ‘Duchesse de Brabant’ post was the first one I could find that I knew I had a recent, appropriate picture for, in my photo library. I quickly posted the picture, but didn’t have time to write much else, with him looking over my shoulder. She’s been a great bloomer for me, in spite of a powdery mildew problem. Vaporvac - yes -- I do mail order from Annie's (too often, I'm afraid). The shipping is expensive, but things always arrive healthy and well packed for me. One time the delivery truck delayed a day in the middle of a heatwave, and the poor plants fried in the truck, so Annie's re-sent all the ones I told them were damaged. I had sent photos to show them what I got. I ordered both Duchesse de Brabant and Grandmother's Hat last night. I'll stick them in pots and wait 'til next year to plant them in the garden, probably. Who knows, really. I seem to change my mind willy-nilly these days. I went out and bought a 2nd Princesse Charlene de Monaco at the last minute yesterday and put it in the spot where I had just dug up my Red Baron peach tree... I'm still waiting on my bare root Scentuous and Julie Andrews roses.

Ken - for only 3 hours of sun a day, I definitely would not plant roses. You might consider an Endless Summer hydrangea; they do well with only partial sun. Another nice plant that I have that is a Chinese tree peony; it only blooms in the Spring, though. It will grow into a nice tree shape and you can underplant with companion plants. It does not like a lot of hot sun; I have mine where it gets morning sun and no afternoon.

I suspect that if Krista is growing the Duchess in upstate NY, she either has a lot of reliable snow cover or her rose is misnamed - probably the latter. Tea roses will not survive temperatures below zero.
I have the Duchess in a pot indoors where she is doing fine.
