Which fruit trees can tolerate a little shade?
Comments (2)Are you only worried about winter? If so, then all your deciduous trees should be the shaded ones, since you want to do what you can to encourage dormancy anyway, in your climate. So, in order of importance that they go into dormancy and so SHOULD be shaded---the peach, apricot, pear, and apple, and also the pomegranate. Also, avocados are under-story trees, so that one would be OK too. Definitely NOT the citrus, since they have a lot going on in wintertime. Comments (9)Looks like Casino is the right choice. Thanks everybody! Carol, how does you friend's Casino bloom there in SC? You know what I mean. lol When in the spring does it start? Does it have a big flush and then nothing for a while, or steady blooms or??? Your climate is about as close to mine as I can get, so whatever hers does, mine will probably do the same. I want to make sure I match a good clematis to Casino's rhythm. Thanks! Gayle...See Moreshade trees that do well in shade???
Comments (8)I think I see what you are saying - you want a tree to provide shade, but it also gets shaded by your western trees. I doubt partial shade will cause much of an issue. If you want a fast growing tree, try yellow poplar or maybe sycamore (there are some downsides to fast growing trees - you don't want them near structures or your water lines). If shade TRULY is an issue, you could try beech, but they need a lot of water and grow slowly. Perhaps some hard maples would give you what you want as well. For the east side, I don't know if I can help - you might check out local options in your area by driving around or checking out an arboretum. There are lots of ornamentals that MIGHT fit the bill like crepe myrtle, honeysuckle, and as you said dogwood. I am not familiar with sun issues and dogwoods, but maybe an issue so far south. Honeysuckle grows like a weed and will spread - but it is really more of a large shrub....See Moretrees going, what about shade plants?
Comments (6)Hi Plaid! My favorite plant-it-and-forget it plants for full summertime sun in Oklahoma are: FLOWERING ANNUALS: Zinnias of any kind, but I am especially partial to the cactus-flowered ones and the Magellan and Profusion series Purslane Portulaca Dusty Miller Mexican Heather Gomphrena Periwinkles Datura (has perennialized in my yard and/or reseeds itself) Verbena Bonariensis (has perennialized in my yard and/or reseeds itself) This is the tall purple-flowered verbena that the butterflies adore. Cosmos (also laughs at the heat and comes in a huge range of colors) Cleome (I grow it in shades of white, rose, mauve, pink and violet) Pentas FLOWERING PERENNIALS: Russian Sage Mexican Petunia Texas Hummingbird Sage (I don't know if it has perennialized itself or if it just reseeds vigorously, but this plant LAUGHS at the sun and heat.) Salvia farinacea (blue flowers) Pineapple Lilies Red Hot Poker Cannas Hardy Hibiscus Zebrina sylvestris 'Malva' Four O'Clocks Daylilies Gayfeather/Liatris Coneflowers GROUND COVERS: Purple Wintercreeper Any of the low spreading junipers Virginia Creeper SHRUBS & TREES Any of the hollies--I especially love 'Stokes' which forms lovely compact mounds Crape myrtles Desert Willow (depite its name it is not a desert plant and it is not a willow, but it is one tough tree and it blooms on and off all summer) Chaste Tree (Vitex Agnus-Castus)--a shrubby tree that blooms on and off all summer Almost any oak or shantung maple will laugh at the heat once they are well established Southern Wax Myrtle--there is a dwarf form and a tree form Lantana--lovely and tough but does need good drainage and does freeze out some years I'm sure other people will add to this list.
