My day.....yesterday

First I started by digging and moving some Echinacea angustifolia, Gaillardia and Knautia that were becoming overshawdowed and or crowded out. Then on to taking cuttings from the Sedum 'Autumn Joy' where I stuck them in front of the Iris planting and gave more to my neighbor...who doesn't know it yet LOL!

Next I made a basket of Climbing Snapdragon (as a trailer), Petunia (lavender and violet mix so who knows!), Sweet Alyssum self-sown seedlings and Purple Millet. Then I planted out more Petunia in a bed border where African Daisy 'Jaffa Ice', Pink Profusion Zinnia and Blue Shrimp Plant are planted. Got some more Millet in the bed which I hope picks up some speed soon! They have stayed very small since they came up....Mar. 30th; their not even 2" tall at this point! Maybe transplanting is what they needed?

I planted more Thai Basil, a few Nicandra in front of the Yarrow and planted 1 single Green Love-lies-Bleeding (Amaranthus virvidus)... that I found while dumping more containers this morning!! I went and pulled out quite a few Larkspur 'Earl Grey' which was way over-crowded and chucked a bunch of Viola 'Johnny Jump-up' into the compost pile. Then on to another bed I was weeding out more Verbena bonariensis and Moss Rose when to my surprise I found about 4 self-sown Statice seedlings from my 'Petite Bouquet' mix I planted last year....one of my final school crops! They are short plants so I plan on moving them today :D

I'm gonna be trying some Giant Red Mustard Greens for the first time this evening. Any tips on cooking these?

Sounds like you had a great gardening day! So much fun!! Your beds and basket sound beautiful! Never cooked mustard greens before - sorry, I don't have any tips on that!

I'm orginally form the South. Here's my basic recipe for all greens:

4 slices of bacon, cut into pieces. "Render" the bacon--cook until most of the fat has gone out of it (but the meat part is still a little soft)

1 onion, chopped--throw these in when the bacon starts to be rendered and cook until caramelized (there might be a little bit of black on them)

Put in the chopped greens and cook until wilted.

Serve with hot sauce.

For a healthier or Vegetarian version, you can use olive oil instead of bacon, but you'll need to add a little salt.

Karen Thank you. I had really NO idea what I was buying. told the lady I needed it labeled because by the time I get in the car I would not remember it anymore lol Joyce great that yours came back. Karyn the hail broke off a lot and I stuck it into another pot. So far it looks like it is growing. hey all, I am just glad I am not the guy that drank the guys drink roflmao I don't know why I only ended up with ONE star hibiscus. I planted so many seeds at the winter sowing. So many had shared the seeds with me and I hope I can pass it on to others. Yupp I just got done watering too a few minutes ago. But while I water, I also do a touch, talk and cleaning up of most plants lol. Brenda good thought...not long and it will be Halloween again. I don't know if I got the bloom wet in the morning when I first sprayed the leaves down. But a few pedals were a little deformed. I still loved it because it was my FIRST :-) Lucy

If you water and feed it will become a tall spindly tree. When you stop feeding and limit water it will appear at 1st glance to be "just sitting there". There will be no foliage and little or no branch growth but the plant will go into increasing it's storage capacity and building girth. Here's a photo from last year of my fattest one. Was leafless all summer then in Oct it rain for about a week and it flowered and grew a bit of branches and foliage. Only receives rain water during the winter and maybe every 4-6wks during the spring/summer/fall. The mix is almost completely grit, maybe 90%. It sits leafless probably 8-9mo out of the year and bakes in the hot sun during the summer similar to habitat. It's in a shallow 10in pot.

Hi Sue! I'm glad your birthday party was such a success!! I had a great day on Sunday! Out of the blue, a couple of weeks ago I got a phone call from my ex-brother-in-law who I hadn't spoken to in over 30 years. He said that I have been mentioned several times over the years and the kids remember me and want to see me again. His oldest daughter was my flower girl, at age 6. I was 20. We emailed a few times and got together yesterday. DH and I had a blast, and 2 of the kids, and 7 of their 12 grandchildren were there. Awesome, polite grand-kids and we got hugs from them all. Ranging in age from about 4 to 16. My "flower-girl" wasn't able to make it yesterday but wants to come next time! To think she's now 42... And the ex DIL and SIL said there will definitely be next times, if we want to go. Anyway, that was my day, and it was great. She made 2 lasagnas, caesar salad, Mississippi mud pie, and I took a loaf of homemade bread.

I do it close to how jenfee does; except I also add a splash of apple cider vinegar and a pinch of sugar. Lol I also omit the hot sauce.

Oh hell yeah I'll try that with the Collards too!!! That sounds like the bomb! I've got some pepper-bacon and definatley have the hotsause....habanero baby LOL! I'll try it with just the Olive oil and seasoning next time; how about a little cajun seasoning? I've been using it in the Okra Gumbo on top of the cayenne I add....oh yes it's spicy! Instead of the bell pepper for the trinity I sub with jalapeno or anaheim.
Speaking of which, I've been using frozen Okra....but I've got 2 Longhorn seedlings to plant this year, so I may be knocking at your door for some okra cooking/frying tips come summer...deal? I'm ok with it in Gumbo, but as a side I've always cringed. Yup, I'm a northern girl but lived in Dallas and florida when I was introduced to it.

I think the only reason I didn't like cooked spinach as a kid was because of the vinegar, but I'm open to trying it again.

Asian style: blanch the mustard greens and drain (or kale, collards, etc) Heat a little oil in a wok or frying pan and stir fry briefly (about 1-2 minutes) sprinkle with a small amount of sugar (like 1 teaspoon) and soy sauce and stir another 30 sec.
