OT: Dorothy, eat your heart out!

(As I typed that I got an ill feeling...what the heck is the origination of THAT saying??!!! Eww...)

Anyway...I'm VERY excited to report from the iris/poppy bed this week...there are so many poppies this year that I barely needed to weed! Look at 'em all!!! Whooo hooo!!! The irises are starting to pop, so they'll be the show and after that, watch out!

Wow, great idea that combo! My iiris is so over grown that I could not "get anything between it' but if I ever do make the time/energy commitment to clearing it out, breaking up clumps, putting them aback in with space between - I'll plant reseeding poppies!

Joe: By pugging I mean to "top" it to force lateral branching at a early stage (to give a more compact, rounded plant with better horizontal branching). I would cut it where that new flush started. The nodal space is nice and tight right below it and it would most likely give you a good three initial branches. As for the mulch, the crown should not be covered (by dirt/soil or mulch) and the mulch should not be touching r that close to the trunk. They should have given you their instruction sheet which states not to cover/bury the crown (don't remember the exact language they use). If you need one I can scan it to you. Rob

Hi devorah, Are you saying the endocrinologist lowered your thyroid meds? Don't I remember you saying your were diabetic too? Are you on insulin, or diet-controlled? I have always seemed to have diabetic-type problems, but I'm not diabetic. But I do wonder if I have an insulin problem......secreting to much when I eat? I suppose it would be a good idea to try a really low carb diet for awhile, but that's really hard to do. I was on Toprol for 6 years (a beta blocker), and it made me gain weight too......and have no motivation or stamina. I finally got off it......but now my heartrate is up all the time. It was wonderful at keeping my heart very quiet though! I guess we just can't have it all!

oh you lucky lady! Ah, seventh heaven - free roses !!! I have got everyone at work well aware of my obsession and now a few of them are bringing in cut roses from their bushes at home...and who do you think is taking them home when they're ready to chuck out, to pot them up as cuttings? well...I just have to try...some of them are exquisitely perfumed and they have nice pencil thick stems! Definitely, post a picture of them in bloom - I remember your post awhile ago - mentioning that after the poppies you replace that bed with cosmos... Great idea!

Now I am really seeing the difference in bloom times with different zones. My irises were already done over a month and a half ago, same with poppies. I am going to love seeing yours in bloom :0)

Thats a TON of poppies!!! I cant wait to see the blooms!

The seeds you sent me are doing well, they found the spots they like the best and are growing like crazy also!

I stole your idea about sowing Poppy seeds when you first posted it a while back.

What I didn't take note of in my excitement is that you get sun on BOTH sides of your Iris.

Needless to say the Iris wrap around one corner of the house behind Roses/in front of Mock Orange...gorgeous this time of year.

Only problem is once the Iris foliage grew there was only sun in the very front of the very dense clumps.

Well, I'm keeping little Poppy seedlings up front watered every day as I'll be thrilled if I even get 10 plants...LOL.

I'm just dying for Poppies!

Please do post another pic this year so we can see the beautiful drift of Poppies again. :)

Ok, stupid question time (posted on the Annuals forum, too, but since we're ALWAYS talking about poppies over here, I figured I'd ask)...

Aside from the perennial Orientale Brilliante (oh YEAH!!!!!) that finally arrived this year, the annual varieties are now about 3-5" tall. I have an issue:
I have a whole section in this bed that are starting to form bloom heads- eghads! This can't be good.

I thought a 'carpet' of poppies would be a good thing, and now I'm wondering if I need to actually pull a ton of them out to give them room because they are either stunted, or misbehaving, or something. Not sure what's going on. It's only one small section that's starting to form the bloom-heads; the rest of the bed is still fine and just growing normally.

whats a bloomhead? It sounds like something bad? Its more than just a flower bud?

Yes, they definitely need more room; 8" apart is ideal. I've kept them a bit closer, but not much. I'd rip a bunch of them out (be ruthless!) and fertilize them if you haven't already. Good luck!

Definitely need more space between those poppies to bloom well. If you keep them as is the plants will grow way thin and spindly with not much branching. I spend hours thinning mine out each spring...most of them are up in fall, but I wait until spring to see the population count after spring germination.

Thanks; it killed me to pull out even a small handful (that didn't even make a DENT) last night, but I'll put on my ruthless face and get out there tonight and do some damage-control before it's too late.

AND...I won't over-seed the area next year!

Annual varieties. Most of my seed was Giganteum, but there are several others that I purchased seed from a couple years back from an ebay seller (onestoppoppyshop) that ranged from poofy pinks, whites, lavenders, dk purples, and yellowish-greens to single purples, hot pinks, Lauren's grape (none of these are labeled any longer, by the way), one called Drama Queen, and I've got some perennial ones in there that are just starting to bloom right now called Orientale Brilliante from T&M.
