My 35$ maha chinook...plantogram eat your heart out!

Hey everyone today I picked up a 3-gallon maha chinook from excalibur rare fruit trees for only 35$ yes that's right thirty-five dollars! Makes me laugh cause plantogram and everywhere else is way more expensive. They still have like 10+ trees in 3-gallon and a few in 7-gallon pots in stock. I just created a photobucket account so I can post pictures and below are some pictures of my babies! Still on my wish list is an Ivory mango, which I think might be on the way....

Gotta love the way they spell "Chanook" (I have talked to Richard about this). Better pug that Maha. Also, and just my 2 cents, I would not have all that mulch in the "pots". It should not really be covering the crown or up against the trunk.

Its actually Mahachanok, the grafter's read the original from Thailand incorrectly mistaking the "ok" for "ois" joining the "i" and "s". Murahilin has been clarifying the issue for along time. There are a few originals that have expired quarintine tags print labeled "Mahachanok" at the back of the nursery in large pots from the original voyage.

For some time I have wondered at the unbelievable cowardice of the librul haters. Aren't libruls historically the weak men already? Libruls are the lily livered, civil rights and free love if not feminist advocating, pot smoking back to the landers and conscientious objectors. They are the meek and mild bleeding hearts, like Jesus. You know, the intellectual and emotional conscience of society. So why are these gorilla headed neocons namecalling them? Libruls are no threat to the rich, strong, and powerful who own everything and control the government and the military. Oh wait, they are. Love-ins stopped the Vietnam war. In a time of rampant overpopulation, lives were saved and military contractors lost money. Unforgivable. Today, the voice of the victim is the only voice that has any moral clout in American society. There is only one way for those in power to reclaim control over the hearts and minds of the populace. In fact, Hitler was probably the illegitimate grandson of a wealthy Jew who may have molested Hitlers mother when she was a servant in their home. Isn't it also ironic that most neocons hate their fellow American libruls even more than Bin Laden? Divide and conquer. Don't think about it, just shut up and do as you're told. Well, to be fair, the terrorists are only shooting at the soldiers. A man can respect and even admire another warrior. But the Libruls might be saying bad things about the soldiers, and that is unforgivable. What bad things are they saying? Oh, bad things like stop the war, save tax dollars, bring our sons home. Ok, stupid question time (posted on the Annuals forum, too, but since we're ALWAYS talking about poppies over here, I figured I'd ask)... Aside from the perennial Orientale Brilliante (oh YEAH!!!!!) that finally arrived this year, the annual varieties are now about 3-5" tall. I have an issue: I have a whole section in this bed that are starting to form bloom heads- eghads! This can't be good. I thought a 'carpet' of poppies would be a good thing, and now I'm wondering if I need to actually pull a ton of them out to give them room because they are either stunted, or misbehaving, or something. Not sure what's going on. It's only one small section that's starting to form the bloom-heads; the rest of the bed is still fine and just growing normally. Help!

@Lychee Madison loves accompanying me in the back yard, but I have to be careful, she pulled out a Mangosteen a few months back, and it didn't survive, but she is a doll. @Jeff, When I mention it being cool, that means we get way down to 64F at night, daytime temps have been around, 80-85, not as cool this winter as last year during the day. @piko I am not sure yet, I really hope I can get my own property some day, and I would prefer to plant it in the ground, in the mean time, it will stay in a container. I may try and get another LZ when I go back to the States, in April, this way I can keep one home and the other plant in the semi arid area of Azua. Mangoes do a lot better out west in this country, because of the lower humidity and rainfall. Since I had success with the Coconut cream, I may keep the original I brought from the US, and plant the grafted one, out there, the "Banilejo" root stock it has, is a big tree, and probably will do better in the ground. I suspect "Banilejo" comes from the Bombay mango. they look similar. I also brought 2 seedlings from my mothers, Valencia Pride, they also survived, they are just now pushing out leaves, I will definitely get these in the ground. its amazing these even made it, they were very small, and I broke off most the root system when getting them out of the ground.

Thanks, Holiday-ers, I'm glad you enjoyed the view from my LR window...appreciate your gracious comments. jane...the fruit feeder has top & bottom (as seen in pic) w/hole cut out for clear glass custard cup size (so you can see when the jelly is gone!) Plus an archway between the top & bottom for spacing...rope for hanger & 2 screws from the bottom up for the orange halves. Orioles love it...also we get Catbirds who enjoy it. Squirrels do attack (sometimes)...but fruit feeder is on Shepherd's hook & they don't seem to bother it much...we tap on the windows ALOT! & send our dog out the front door often, too! LOL! Ahhh, dust bunnies are certainly multiplying around here...but it's ok...got to be out on the nice days! And I've been enjoying the bunny tureens on the forum lately, too! Thanks, everyone! Wow - you have most of the latest and greatest varieties. Do you recall what the 7 gal maha was going for? I'm sure those won't last long. Also any idea if Jeff has a large stock of the lemon zest & coconut cream? I won't be out that way until december but hoping to get maha, LZ, & an Angie.

I believe the 7 gal are $65. Not sure what Jeff has left in Coco Cream or LZ but Excalibur also has both available. I believe the LZ is in 7 gal (I THINK all of their 3 gals have been potted up to 7s) and I am pretty sure all of the Coco Creams are potted up in 15 gal. Not sure where you will be able to procure an Angie from. Don't know if Fairchild still has them or not.

So, if you come over in december call ahead and see if they can get an Angie for you.

By pugging I mean to "top" it to force lateral branching at a early stage (to give a more compact, rounded plant with better horizontal branching). I would cut it where that new flush started. The nodal space is nice and tight right below it and it would most likely give you a good three initial branches.

As for the mulch, the crown should not be covered (by dirt/soil or mulch) and the mulch should not be touching r that close to the trunk. They should have given you their instruction sheet which states not to cover/bury the crown (don't remember the exact language they use). If you need one I can scan it to you.

I can say from experience, they will get to the "7gal size" rather quick. Jeff - mine is now pushing a new flush. It has surpassed the Coco Cream I got from you in the 7gal and that had already pushed one full flush and looks to be starting another.

BTW, the leaves on the new flushes on the Coco Cream are large. Larger than most other varieties I have at based on the same size tree.
