rain gauge broken

We had a tremendous rain yesterday, of the flooding variety, and when I went out this AM to check the rain gauge to see how much, the bottom of the tube had broken. I can only attribute it to the torrential rain.

So first, does anyone know where you can get just a glass tube part of the rain gauge? This is my only ornament, and it sits in a little fairy with wings. Secondly, will this more than likely keep happening with a glass test tube kind of rain gauge?

My guess is that the real culprit was water freezing and expanding in the tube. It could have simply weakened it enough that the weight of a full tube of water was enough to make the bottom fall out. If left outside during freezing weather, yes, it will probably happen again. We usually bring such things inside for the winter. If we want a rain gauge, it's a tuna fish can or some such thing that won't break as easily and even if it does break, is simple to replace.

That's true, if it's freezing rain it'll break. I brought mine in last night just because we got below freezing. It'll stay inside now. Here's a company you can get replacements from, I've bought from them before and they're a good company.

As the previous poster said, you should have your rain gauge out in the open away from any buildings. Is the raingauge on the very top of the post or lower down? If lower down maybe water is running off the post or splashing off the post. Also, if you live on a hill you will often get more rain then people in the flat lands. They call that orographic rainfall. http://encyclopedia.farlex.com/orographic+rainfall I use a five gallon bucket with straight up and down sides as my rain gauge. You can also get less rain if you are in the rain shadow of some mountain or hill. I know when the direction of the storm puts Fullerton in the rain shadow of Catalina Island we get less rain during that time.

Jeanie, surely you know about Old Indian Weather method? Hang rock outside of window or door. If rock is wet, is raining or foggy. If rock is hot, sun is shining. If rock is white on top, must be snow. And in OK, if rock has shiny covering of ice, too cold.! Go back inside, dummy! We only got three inches, and the rain really didn't start falling here until sometime after 10 p.m last night. We're in great shape....just mud and puddles, no flooding anywhere in our county that I've heard. I've linked the current Drought Monitor map which included reported rainfall through Tuesday. As you can see by looking at it, OK is in fine shape--probably the best shape its been in overall in at least a year. In Texas, the drought is ebbing away slowly. Parts of it still look pretty bad on the linked map, but they're improving weekly. I am starting to laugh at DH and his fire department buddies. They keep telling me "it is going to be a bad fire season as soon as this rain stops". I have started telling them "no, it isn't". The weather this year is so completely different from what we've had the last four years that I am not at all concerned about the winter fire season. I'm more concerned we're in for months of heavy rainfall, courtesy of El Nino, and that we're going to have a hard time planting in spring because everything is going to be very waterlogged. I still have a wonderful garden....still producing peppers (ugh--I've had more than enough of them), okra, green beans, corn, winter squash, tomatoes and cucumbers. I've got broccoli and cabbage going for fall/winter crops. They all need sunlight to grow though, and that seems in short supply. And if you're keeping track of rainfall, one option is going to the NOAA page for your area, and go to the cumulative (total storm) option and get an amount for your pixel.

I like to know my own rain, one day the airport said we only had a certain amount yet here on the opposite side of town we had a quarter inch more:)

I even have two weather station temps set up one on the front porch and one on the back porch just to let me know what the day holds. Front porch is 10o warmer, LOL* Delivery people especially like it when they walk up and find it says 120o. Weather is usually wrong because they do it from 45 miles away.

Something fun that was a better forcaster of storms were the water barometers. Pegged a snow storm every time when the forest service didn't.

My problem is the opposite of Les - it often happens that the northern part of town where the airport/weather station is, gets rain while our area receives not a drop.

Thank you Leslie, for that link. That is something I need to order too, due to my procrastination this fall in bringing in the garden ornaments. Sounds like I have the same little fairy holding a glass rain vial just like Redsox...broken. My own fault, sigh. Nice to know I can replace it before spring.
