My Pathetic Little Carpet Rose

Rose photo didn't come out clear - but you get the idea. This is my $1 Pink Supreme recovered from the Lowes discount rack, photo taken on December 16th.

I had never thought to purchase a carpet rose before, but I couldn't resist at the price. I started with her in partial shade, and she just sat dormant. Silly little rose I thought, ready to toss her to the wind. I posted a guilt post on the forum thinking - ah, no one would say save this little thing, but yeah Seil - she said they were pretty cute and I should give her another try.

So, I dug her up and put her in this spot with full sun, but where certainly she wouldn't succeed, because 1 foot under this piece of soil is pure rock. One year later, and almost winter, with all my other roses going night night, here she is.

They can really fool you, can't they? Actually I was focusing more on the dogs. Is the middle one by any chance a Schipperke?

I have 5 of the original Flower Carpet roses which were planted in a sort of short hedge out by the street (between the sidewalk and the street) over 20 years ago. They routinely get flooded at this time of the year with rain runoff. It has been rainy and cold here for a couple of weeks. However, they are just coming into bloom again, and are one of the bright spots in the garden - I do not disparage roses that are easy care and bloom a very lot, even if they are "ubiquitous".

Thanks Kathy! I am very very sure my gear-head bro can get it going if it's just water in the gas tank. I am pretty sure it's just the water thing. It starts and actually runs for a minute or two before dying, so it's not the ECU. I dried the car out by parking it up a hill (so the water would drain off) and opening the hood and putting the top down. It's almost ready for Mark to come fix it. Thank you for asking Janis; I am glad you care. I am so glad Nancy is ok! The tracks are still under water. Sewer water. She needs to stay out if it. Have you seen the footage of the horses being saved? It's almost as good as the humans being saved.

Drift Roses VS. Carpet Roses

I just added Drift to my collection of roses last year. I've been growing Flower Carpet roses for over 12 years and I've been really happy with them. Most of the varieties Flower Carpet that I have bloom almost nonstop from about the end of June through our first few frosts. The ones that seem to be the most full in our area are Scarlet and Pink Supreme but I also love Coral and Appleblossom even though they don't get as big. From what I can tell after the first year of having Drift roses is that they are considerably smaller roses - both the flower and the shrubs themselves - but I guess that makes sense because I think that they're promoted as being for smaller spaces. I have mine tucked in some spots between the Flower Carpets where I needed filler.

harmonyp - I am in the Northern SF Bay area, so probably in a climate reasonably similar to yours. I don't know exactly which carpet rose you are talking about - I think there are several. I bought 5 of the original dark pink "Flower Carpet" ones over 20 years ago, and planted them in a row way out front between the sidewalk and the street, in a planting strip that is about 6 feet wide. They grow under the partial shade of some large canopy street trees. They get flooded every winter when the storm gutter overflows into that bed. They get some osmocote thrown on them once a year, in the Winter I "prune" them with a hedge clipper, and they are on our automatic irrigation system (as we get no rain for 5-6 months in our hot summer) - that's it for "care". Well, each Spring they start blooming, and bloom and bloom all Summer. Haven't seen any disease to speak about. They have grown into a nice hedge about 3 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide. Occasionally they try to eat a parked car or the sidewalk, but then I do cut them back a bit - or the City will complain. I would recommend them for any difficult situation. Jackie

I got one too, mine was $1.62, though. It's not doing any better than it was. I think it gets the shovel soon.

Lovely! And your puppies are too cute!

I have a few Drift roses (similar concept to the carpet roses) and love their continuous color in my perennial beds. Don't have any in a bright color like that though, it definitely looks great!

OH, I'm so glad you gave her another try and she didn't disappoint you! In the right spots they are a real work horse rose. They stay short and drape and spread out to fill an area very nicely. And they are pretty sturdy too. Mine is planted at the curb and 2 sides are concrete and it still grows like a weed.

Your dogs are so cute! We have a heeler/rater terrier mix that looks like a skinny version of yours :)

I have a red flower carpet by my mailbox and it just blooms like crazy with little care. Great little powerhouse rose.

Yes Ingrid, Gracie is a Schipperke. Breed should be Runerke instead - she is one crazy bundle of energy. I couldn't resist getting the girls in the picture, they accompany all of my garden adventures. Tammy - the bigger girls used to be a skinnier version of themselves too, but middle age has gotten to all of us!!!

If I see any other carpet roses on a sale rack, they definitely have a home at my place. This lesson taught me a good lesson that I've heard repeatedly here. Just because it's "common", doesn't mean it's not good.

Just think what this rose will look like this spring. Ha! This little rose has earned a shovelfull of compost or horse manure don't you think? It really beautifies that spot. CA poppies would look nice there too.

Kitty - that's a great idea. I've been wanting to add poppies but didn't have an idea of where to put them. I'll try a few intermixed there and see how they do!
