First WS Bloom - Morning Glory!!!!
Comments (2)How cool! Congratuations to you. Yes this is so fun and I just love it. This is only my second summer and I still get so excited. I have learned so much this last year, but still I am full of questions. This site is absolutely wonderful. Such helpful folks here. I feel so comfortable asking simple questions. I was telling my husband just this morning that without the help from those on this site I never would be able to do what I am doing. A big THANK YOU to everyone here!!...See MoreMorning Glories and Moonflower...When Do They Bloom?
Comments (9)Hi, I sowed Moonflower Vine directly into a large container on 6/3. I am sure I could have gotten them in 2 weeks earlier than that but my pots weren't ready. They are climbing a large hoop that is anchored in two large pots. No sign of blooms yet. This is the second time I am growing them and I remember the first time I tried them, they barely had time to bloom before the first frost. I tried them again because I saw a Backyard Habitat episode about Hummingbird Moths and they are supposed to be attracted to the Moonflower Vine. Plus, we had a late fall frost last year and I had left over seed, so in they went. I am having the same thing happen that Karen did, with the lower leaves yellowing and falling off. I don't mind because I grew MGs on the same hoop and their foliage is keeping the bottom full of leaves. The MGs, I had seedlings to plant in the same pot on 6/3 and they just started blooming last week....See MoreMorning Glory Tadpoles II: Dead in the Water
Comments (6)I had the same problem on some plants. I think (guessing here) it was the high humidity just before I harvested them. I'm not sure what can be done. Some seeds are better ripened on the plant and others can be harvested a little earlier and will ripen off the plant. This seems to be the case anyway, I don't really know very much about seeds. Also, I see I haven't answered the question at all and I don't know what can be done to prevent it. -Ais....See MoreWhen do morning glory and moonflower blossom?
Comments (12)It's normal for MGs to look a little "wilty" in the most intense heat, so don't let that determine your watering schedule. It's also normal for the older bottom leaves to yellow (I just pick mine off) so don't let that determine your watering schedule. As long as the top is still green and growing, I'd just hold off until I noticed either a huge slowdown in growth or else a "wilty" look that doesn't bounce back overnight. (Look at them first thing in the morning to see if they've plumped back up.) They really are quite hardy once they're established, and they really do like to be "stressed out" a bit in order to flower. I don't know if this is really the reason, but my own personal theory on why they flower is this: When food and water are abundant, they figure it's party time -- let's grow as much as we can while the gettin's good. (Kinda like "make hay while the sun shines".) But if food and/or water are getting scarce, they realize that their demise may be coming, and if they want to keep their genes going on, they'll have to create offspring (seeds) before they die. (Like I said, that's just the theory I worked out in my head.)...See Moreccoupkir
