Hi Hippy lvrs! This pic of Novella was taken today, and I must say, she really grew on me lol. At first, I was disappointed, because [I thought] the flower looked the same as Vera. then, it kept changing, and growing pinker, with these cool almost white edges. anyhow..I guess she's a keeper he he.

I read in anouther post that Jodi doesn't have a white in her collection, so if you would like Jodi [and of course when the weather is better, I'll send you the one and a half year old Snow Queen pup in my basement. I'm sure if anyone can get a bloom, its you.

It's beautiful, Beetle! I love that shade of pink! There do seem to be a few pinks that look a bit similar, but upon closer inspection, they do have their own differences!

Beetle, I would be thrilled to have a white youngster! Thank you so much for the offer! Man... you guys are so generous and giving! I can't thank everyone enough for the wonderful gifts they've given me since I've joined in! You guys make me feel special... which just proves how special all of you are! :-)

Snow Queen is a beauty, too! She'd make a fabulous addition to the breeding program! And she'd be treasured because she was a gift from a dear friend! I look forward to nicer weather! Thank you again, Beetle!

Thanks! Got your message, Mike... I'll try to get over to the Cacti Forum sometime this evening. The trip was not without its problems, but we managed... Larry took the wrong Interstate cutoff while I was on the cell phone... took two hours to find out where we were and to backtrack to the right highway... the Bluetooth piece for our GPS had a dead battery. If I knew all the smaller roads, we could have saved a lot of time, but I'm not that familiar with Chicago. We ended up letting little Emmy go... we had sort of intended to keep her... but she's got a great home, so it's ok... we'll do a repeat breeding in another two years. And, we came home to problems... but I don't even want to go there... maybe some other time. Anyway... Nancy, just let the stalk die back naturally... let it dry up before cutting it off. Your bulb could possibly send up another stalk, but each stalk, or scape, only produces one set of flowers. Once it's done blooming, you can begin feeding it regularly with an all purpose plant food, and give it as much sunlight as possible. You could even plant it directly in your gardens, given that you live in a warm climate. Just make sure it has good drainage, and keep it fed while it grows its leaves and photosynthesizes for its next bloom cycle. I'll try to remember to help you through the seasons with your bulb! They're really fun to grow and re-bloom! We used to have some of our Christmases after the fact... it depended on what the kids' mother had going on. Sometimes, we'd get lucky and be able to hit the after Holiday sales so the kids could have more presents to open!

hi justmetoo....thanks for your honest opinion. Just what I was looking for. :-) If you think that view is disjointed, you should see what I have to look at facing the other end of the border. [g] I have one issue that influences the back lot line. A small completely fenced in yard gives me a slightly claustrophobic feeling. The split rail fence allows me a borrowed landscape of sorts that although at the present it has some elements that are distracting, I am hoping to screen with shrubs that will allow for a more open feeling. Besides a lot of what I don't want to look at would still be visible above a 6ft high fence. I doubt very much that I will replace with a solid 6ft fence along that lot line. The particular corner of the lot in the previous photo is directly under a maple, so I am having a hard time figuring out what shrub/s I could place there that might grow and fill in the corner for a screen. Right now I have placed a small Ilex glabra as a test for this year and see how it does. If it did well, I could put a group of them there with something decidious that might give me a 5-6ft height? I might want to add a taxus, but they are so slow growing. Maybe a Rhododendron might do the trick. I would be happy to fill that whole corner with a 'mass' of plant material. Not sure what you meant by 'smashed up' in reference to the border...but I think I am following you when you point out that the veggie garden and border are fighting against each other? Along the lines that idabean was saying. Idabean, I hope you remember the name of the designer you were thinking of. Following along with that line of thinking, veggie gardens are pretty practical and getting in and out of the small raised beds needs some space around them to keep working access....wheelbarrel access. Someone suggested adding bays to the long line of the border that would move into the veggie area and I am mulling that over. I do seem to view the long border in thirds, so two bays where the 'thirds' meet might work. Using bays would bring the perennial border into the area that the veg beds are, more. I might be able to do that more artfully and still leave the access to the beds. I can also try to prettify the veggies growing in the beds as much as possible, which is always a goal. I'll have to give some thought to perennial/vegetable combos too. Height..budget has kept purchases small, so hoping that will become less of a problem. Focal Point...will give that some more thought. Evergreen I am working on and I have some grasses ...Indian Grass, Little Bluestem, Pennisetum Hamelin, some Carex. Not placed correctly yet. A path through the area...definitely have been planning that just not there yet. Interesting idea about the stones. The purpose of the stone edge, was to raise the bed up a little. I couldn't raise it too much because I was afraid of the root zone of the neighbors trees not appreciating changing the soil level too much, but many of the plants I wanted to grow needed good drainage. I am not crazy about the look of the edging. The rocks were given to us free and I would prefer something flatter, consistently colored and two layers, but I am making do for the time being. I like your idea of more natural rock arrangements...but conflicting with the practical for me again, which is how to raise the soil without something to hold it. I do have clay soil and everything grows a lot better with even that small elevation. I am going to come back to that edging and see if I can't improve it. Might not be a 'this year' project, but if I can finish some other things and could concentrate on that next year, I might be able to do something really much better with it. A few more photos looking in the opposite direction along the border a little later in the season. View over the veggie garden in late July, the border behind the veg beds ends in the corner where the two fences meet. That has given me a lot to think about, thanks. A number of good ideas to think about from everyone. :-) If anyone has more, keep them coming..! pm2

this is my system. Neuter the flower by using scissors to cut just the open pollen casings(anther -- stamen). I do this by putting an envelope (I re-use the paper ones my bills come in- so I have plenty! :)) just below the pollen, covering the pistil to avoid dropping the pollen onto it. Record the flower name on the outside and place it in the door of the fridge. I would then select a donor pollen, use tweezers to remove pollen from the envelope and apply it to the pod parent (like all the highly scientific tools and terms?)usually several days in a row. As far as record keeping I cut plastic blinds (from the thrift store- 50 cents or so) into 2" lengths (easily done with scissors), punch a hole in them with a paper punch and label with a pencil (easily re-used by wetting and erasing with a regular pencil eraser). Pod parent first with pollen parent second (pod- "Novella X Picotee> -pollen). Use a twist tie to tie it just at the base of the flower close to the main stem. Rather unsightly for show but highly effective when pollinating all the flowers with different pollen. I could have 4 crosses on one scape all different donating parents and never lose track. About 5-6 weeks later when the pod is ripe I then cut the pod off with the label and again store it in a paper envelope. I test germinate 10 by planting in seed starter mix and newspaper tubes under lights. Generally I get 80% germination. (hence all the babies). I trade, and sell the seeds. last year I had about 3000 seeds! A few too many for the spare room. I have also successfully used the water germination method. Float the seeds in water. It is okay for them to touch but not overlap. I keep an eye on the water and add or change most of the water. You should start seeing results in about 10-14 days. What I don't like about this method is transplanting the seeds with such a fragile root into soil. I find it more finiky (that a word?) than just straight into soil. When I plant them in the soil I stick the fat end of the seed, papery covering and all, into the soil standing it upright (vertically). Really good results and very strong seedling. The soil method takes much longer to see results. I believe up to 6 weeks for some, even in the same batch. All depends on your patience level. I found unsuccessful pollination occured when I applied pollen only once and then there is that diploid issue which I have not figured out yet. One of these days I will do research on it. I remember quite some time ago it was mentioned in some news group but I didn't know enough then to understand let alone ask an intelligent question. I do know it would explain why Papillo butterfly did not cross with anything that I tried. Having mentioned Papillo butterfly. I bought two from RC last year and gave the one with the scape to my mother for Christmas. The second one came with some rot, I notified them (and was told on my next order they would fix the problem- and they did on the next order!) I did not get flowers of course on that one. This year I only got leaves again! I thought I read somewhere here that they can be difficult to get to rebloom. Any suggestions of how to get it to perform?

Hi my name is Korrie - I saw your forum message on iVillage Garden Web, I don't actually have any Hoya to exchange, because I just met my first Hoya yesterday. A lady stopped by to give a start to a client of mine. I just have to have one, but she said when this one grows (and she added that it takes a while) then you can get a start off of it. I just don't know if I an wait that long. Can you please tell me what I would need to do in order to obtain one of these wonderful plants. I am so obsessed with getting one. I'm So Glad Jodi!! Can't wait till springish weather now,and please let me know if you want any of the wierd combos [seeds]. [this is putting the horse before the cart] Oh boy, oh boy am I ever going to pamper the little bulb in the next few weeks! a little more light,and I'm thinking, she will come upstairs. [don't worry,Iwon't over water lol!] I'll take a pic soon, and post your SQ pup.

Very pretty Beetle! I am with Chaz on the pinks, but actually I haven't seen a bloom I didn't like from these guys!

Call me a bulb freak, but I have yet to see an ugly bloom from any bulb! Even if they're slightly misshapen, or off color, or have any sort of physical oddity... I still find them highly interesting and very beautiful!

No rush, Beetle... and I'd be more than happy to try growing some new seed crosses! My own seed production this season will be low... I only acquired a few new bulbs this time around.

No worrys Jodi, there is lots of time before the weather here perks up. We are going to have showers amongst our snow and shifting temps lol,[but not really!] Oh well..January is half over, and it will be time to start a few seeds of this and that.usually the slow growing stuff, like pansys,lavender etc. it keeps us gardeners sane,not sad.

Hey Beetle! How's it going?? I really had the same 'do I really love it' feeling with my Nova last year. the more it opened and hung around the more I liked it. Mine was kinda goofy, I think it bloomed before it's time as it was really stubby, but the blooms lasted long and it was really pretty. Can't wait for it to bloom this year.

I'm so glad we've reached the middle of January already... I really dislike cold weather! Today, it's a very windy 17 degrees, and it's snowing on and off. Very shortly, I'll be starting a few seeds, myself... it keeps us gardeners sane and busy while we await the warmer weather of spring!

This time of year is always kinda blah,thank goodness for the few Hipps in bloom , or growth, or seed! Yeah, Jodi, I can,t stand the cold weather either, especially damp cold. seems to go straight to the ol bones lol!

It almost reminds me of a lotus or water lily in its stumpy photo... but the pink coloration makes it a knockout!

I can never decide which color Hippi I like the best... pinks, reds, oranges... they all have such beauty and texture... who can really choose just one?!

This week begins the basement preparations for seed starting... I have lights to hang, tables to clear off, seed trays and soil to bring in... and we're going to try using a large, thermostat controlled heat mat that was designed to keep baby pigs warm, as our bottom heat. It should work as it does have a temperature control on it.

C'mon Spring! :-)

Lovely Cindee!! hmmmm, now I'm confused. My Novella, looks identicle to the one on the emaryills site, and I've seen several, that look like yours and other peoples. [not that it matters] maybe different growers, have slightly different versions?

I simply love pink, and for the most part, the lighter the better. I'm going to try to cross some that will result in pink blooms :-)
