Comments (4)You know, you can just go to your local nursery, get some young (or not so young) trees and DIY, which is way more meaningful, educational and interesting than buying someone else's already half done (or mostly, if they're already old) trees, plus it's much less expensive. And you can find appropriate pots somewhere along the way. Another thing to think about is that buying trees online means you don't get to examine them in any real way - can't see what's on the far side, can't really check out the root structure on top, or know if there are insects around... or to put it another way, would you want to buy a new pet like that, or other types of artwork? Comments (9)Regan Nursery offers a good selection of 36" standards. Seems you'll need to select "36" standard rose tree" under Rose Class AND "36" Tree" under Type to search them. Many mail order nurseries offer some 36" standards, but a short search of those familiar to me showed Regan with the most varieties. These would be sent bare root next Spring. Perhaps a local nursery would be willing to order from their suppliers for you for Spring delivery. Believe these would need heavy protection to overwinter in your zone. possibly best garage kept. You may want to ask if others here are growing these successfully in your zone & what methods they use in Winter. Here is a link that might be useful: Regan search...See MoreWhat is a good source to buy fig trees online?
Comments (4)Like the above poster Suzi AKA Desert Dance said are you sure you lost your trees. Example i put a potted 10 year Hardy Chicago in ground out in the open not near any structure with just some dry leaves at base few winters back it died to near ground level and produced a few figs . Then what everyone was calling the polar vortex came for a visit along with heavy snowfalls but the cold came first again it died to near soil level but produced some figs late in September going into October. I did lose some potted ones that were stored in attached garage . Give yours a chance if there inground they just may sprout near the soil level come sometime late June. I have dealt with raintree nursery and edible landscaping long time ago and had no problems just not sure if things are still the same or not. Here is Hc Jan 2014 the temp was 19 below zero here as mentioned it died to ground level but came back . I could protect it but it was put there to see what would happen otherwise , i have spare in containers. Martin...See MoreHarris delivery: Shiranui and Bearss Lemon
Comments (37)Normally, in bonsai you pass a wire through two holes in the bottom so that you have a U shape sticking up through the pot. Then you wrap around and over the root ball and twist them together. In this case I wrapped it around the trunk snug. The plant will be pulled towards the bottom so have enough soil below the plant or it will keep being pulled lower as you tighten. A pair of wire is usually used, I used one in this case. This works nicely for pots that have "feet" otherwise the wire at the bottom will prevent the pot from sitting flat. This was the case for this pot but the pot is not stiff enough so it works. A better way for pots without feet is drill four pairs of holes and have 4 wires attached to it like this: Then you use the opposing pairs to tie the root ball and/or the trunk. I prefer root ball but if there are not enough thick roots near the surface I will wrap it around the trunk like this. First hand tighten but if you pull on the wires you will notice there is some slack. Use pliers to pull and twist the wires at the same time. Test with another pull and if there is no slack then it is good. At this point you should be able to lift the plant using the trunk with no visible movement. A plant that is tied has a far better chance of growing roots. Otherwise any movement of the plant (especially if it is top heavy) will cause the root ball to jiggle in soil and damage newly forming roots....See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
