Looking for online store to buy rose trees.

Hi, I'm looking for a website(s) that are reputable and have quality rose trees. I'm looking to buy a few of them that are on a 36" standard. The local garden centers only have The Double Knockout Rose tree on a 24" standard. I bought one but I'd like to have a wide variety of them. If you have bought some online and can direct me to right place I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Wow - I'll bet shipping a 36 inch standard rose would be expensive! Let us know where you are geographically, and hopefully someone near you will know of a nursery which has standards you can go pick up.

Wouldn't a 36" standard have problems in 5B conditions?

I bought raspberry twirl and rainbow's end bare root fom Edmund's this year. (among an order of about 10 roses). Raspberry twirl grew and is now healthy. It made 1 flower but squirrels ate it as a bud and I never saw it open. The squirrels have since pruned it again. It's potted, I'm trying to figure out a place for it to climb. Need to plant in the ground soon before winter. The plant is healthy but haven't seen a flower since. Incidentally, Rainbow's end failed to grow. I reported it and got $10 store credit. I bought it on clearance. I already have 2 Rainbow's End roses from last year bought for $3.99 each at Menards. Both are prolific at flowering and survived the winter (1 indoors, one outside without protection.)

Why can't you buy dept. store clothes online?

One reason department stores do not sell everything from their stores online is that they are department stores. The manufacturers pay to rent the space in the stores and have an agreement with the store to handles transactions. This is why clothing lines like Esprit and Ralph Lauren are displayed in their own areas that are decorated differently than the surrounding store areas and not mixed in with all the other clothing. They may have an agreement contract written to partner with advertising together - or not. They may not want online sales to keep their product line "exclusive". Cosmetics are sold like this too in department stores. The manufacturer is responsible for stocking, maintenance and displays. The persons working cosmetic counters in department stores are often employees of the cosmetic manufacturer and not of the store. Ergo, if you wish to order Betsey Johnson clothing online you will have to order from the Betsey Johnson site itself, not the department store.

Buying Tiles: a real store in NYC area, or online?

I just purchased bathroom wall and floor tiles and kitchen backsplash tiles from Classic Tile on 86th Street in Brooklyn. Excellent selection and great prices. My contractor suggested a Westchester tile shop, but the prices were beyond my budget. I found the same tiles (both ceramic and marble mosaic tiles) for about half the price. They're very helpful and there's no hard sell. I can highly recommend Classic Tile.

For what's it worth, I'm in Panama City and found it frustrating to grow rose trees. In the past 2 years, I had zero luck with rose trees from Lowe's. It was very frustrating to see 2 trees die within a week of purchase (kept in their bucket, well water). Gave up on that, bought a Julia Child rose tree from their main competitor while I was in Atlanta last year and it survived for a few months but struggled from the moment it was planted into the ground. After a couple of months, it was dead too. So I visited a local nursery while I was in Birmingham AL last month. After a careful inspection, the number of grafts (or branches) were greater and larger size/diameter too than those from the big box home improvement stores, the height and diameter of the trunk was greater and so too was the size of the bucket it came in. The local nursery bought these directly from the grower as bare root and planted them into their own buckets. The quality is visibly different, much higher, than those I bought in the prior failed adventures from Lowe's and HD. In short, I suggest you shop at your local nursery rather than buy online. The trick is to find a great quality nursery in your area that sells high quality rose trees. You'll know it when you see it. The nursery where I bought mine was an old school mom and pop type nursery - clearly not a fancy place but the selection and quality of the various roses and rose trees was phenomenal. It was clear to me they bought higher grade rose plants and trees that are not likely available for direct purchase by a consumer like you and I from the grower. Should you buy online, I doubt you'll get 5+ well sized healthy canes on a rose tree trunk. Every single one of those rose plants and the rose tree I bought from the mom and pop nursery have grown exceptionally well since their planting last month or two. I paid more than those found in the big box store but they have grown better than the others planted at the same time from the big box retailers. I've learned my lesson - find a mom and pop nursery and buy those better quality plants from them.

Regan Nursery offers a good selection of 36" standards. Seems you'll need to select "36" standard rose tree" under Rose Class AND "36" Tree" under Type to search them. Many mail order nurseries offer some 36" standards, but a short search of those familiar to me showed Regan with the most varieties. These would be sent bare root next Spring. Perhaps a local nursery would be willing to order from their suppliers for you for Spring delivery.

Believe these would need heavy protection to overwinter in your zone. possibly best garage kept. You may want to ask if others here are growing these successfully in your zone & what methods they use in Winter.

Thank you guys for all the information. Maybe there is a reason why no local nurseries sell them at a 36" standard and that is due to my climate. I have another question now, will my 24" Double Knockout Rose a Tree "Radtko" be okay in my area? It is planted on the north side of my house and doesn't have much protection in terms of wind. The tag stated it was a zone 5-8 tree.

I think most tree roses are on Dr Huey, your first problem will be keeping the rootstock alive in the winter, remember the stem is rootstock too and he is only listed to zone 6b

You might want to start a thread on protecting standards in your zone and see if anyone has been successful in ground and how they did it.

Thanks Kippy. When I bought the rose tree at the nursery there was a customer there who said she had a Knockout Rose tree and it was large and beautiful. I didn't ask her if it was in the ground but I assumed it was. I'm going to do some research and see if I should move it to the south of my house or leave it in place. If I move it I will put in a PeeGee Hydrangea tree in its place. Thanks for the heads up.

I've never seen it in person, but I've heard that 'Polar Joy' is supposed to be hardy to zone 4. The stem of this standard is the same plant as the flowering portion, so it doesn't have the issue of the understock not being hardy. It seems like a good choice for climates like the OP's.

That is interesting Jay.

The problem with standards, is the tall "trunk" that can not stand the cold and is the Dr Huey part. But start a new thread on protecting them and bet some one can tell you how they have had success....being in SoCal, I am jealous of some of those colder weather roses, but am really amazed at how much work some people need to do to keep their roses alive. You know how much they love their plants!

I am a bit of a fanatic with my tree roses. The grafted roses have great difficulty surviving a NORMAL zone five winter in the elements, as the graft freezes
. I have about ten in large pots that are rolled in after 3 hard frosts. I have two, Black Cherry and April in Paris that have survived in a very protected spot outside. Some of the tree roses are tall bushes that have been trimmed to a central chosen branch and cultivated to flower from the top. Much like a topiary hydrangea, hibiscus, etc. that way the root supply is underground and protected. Reagan has a wonderful inventory.
