Mid pride Peach not flowering. Zone 10
Comments (9)How much new growth did your tree put out last year? The bloom is primarily (entirely?) on last year's growth. If the tree didn't put out new growth due to last year's fruit load or other causes, then your bloom will be light this year. Light bloom this year will let it put all its energy into shoot growth growth as long as water, nutrients, etc. are good and you should do much better next year....See MoreFlowering Plant I.D. Comments (3)I agree with the Ruttya fruticosa ID. There is also a yellow-flowering form. I have one of each color. They weren't too fond of the colder-than-usual temps we had earlier in the season, but still managed to toss out some flowers and are sprouting fresh foliage....See MoreGood websites on WHEN to start flower seeds for Zone 10 Florida
Comments (3)EDIS/IFAS does include regional planting dates on the fact sheets for individual varieties of flowers - I tried typing the common name in their search box & got results for a few. For some reason, they list many under 'shrub fact sheets' - helpful if you know the scientific names... Here is a link that might be useful: Fact sheets @ EDIS/IFAS...See MoreCherry Blossom Kwanzan will it bloom & survive in N. Los Angeles 9B
Comments (2)This is actually a fairly complicated question to answer. The short answer is that cherry blossom trees generally do not do so well in the Southern California climate. It is too hot and sunny, the air is too dry, and there are not enough chill hours in the winter. There are at least a few varieties of cherry blossom that can do well in climates without winter chill (more on this later in this post), but unfortunately these low-chill varieties do not have quite the same attractive blossom shapes as the other popular varieties. I live just South of where you are and am trying to grow a Yoshino and Kanzan. The Kanzan bloomed abundantly in February, but that might have been because the plant could have gotten adequate chill somewhere else a few months before I bought it. The big problem is the leaves are getting too much sun, and the tips of some of them are slightly scorched. Cherry blossom trees are actually closely related to sweet cherries. So perhaps a parallel can be drawn to trying to grow sweet cherries in a climate that is not considered to have adequate chill hours. What I suspect may happen is that it will not have as many blossoms, or there may be some years where it might not produce any blossoms. If I can make a suggestion, there is another thread in this forum that you might want to read titled "Flowering cherry in zone 10" - The cherry blossom varieties that do well in warm climates are the Formosan cherry, and various hybrid varieties thereof; kanzakura, okame, and youkouzakura. 'Pink Cloud' is likely a hybrid of the Formosan cherry as well, I know for a fact there are some growing in a park south of Los Angeles. In Japan, the Formosan cherry is known as hikanzakura or kanhizakura. (same meaning, the kanji characters are just in a different order) In America, the Formosan cherry is also called the Taiwan cherry....See Moreyogert909
