question about tomato seeds if i may

Hi every one,

Last month my daughter was over and she got very excited about WSing,has saved her containers,and was going to get started this week-end.

She bought tomato seeds,nastys,beans peppers,morning glories and some other veggies.

She bought her seed from her home town nursery,her nursery man told her NOT to ws her tomatoes because they will rot for sure.

She has fibromialgia,the hardining off process will pose to be a problem for her, that is why wsing seemed so appeling to her.What seems like a small thing to us, is not to her,a lot of work with pain,so she does not want to fail.

Will her tomato seeds be ok if she ws them now?

I did mine last week,will mine be ok?

WS them, don't let anyone tell you can't, and the same for your daughter too. From a fellow fibromite.

Yep, the seeds will definitely not rot. I've even WS'd tomato seeds in January, and had them all germinate nicely when it warmed up. I'm a zone ahead, but already have tomato sprouts, so I'd say go for it.

Once they've germinated, if there's a late freeze, you may want to cover the container or bring into the garage for night. Although others might say I'm being too cautious.

champagne The Late Blight that's caused the widespread problem with an early appearance is in the Northeast, not in the South. Before concluding your plants had Late Blight, make sure that's what it was. Early blight is a very common tomato plant disease and may be confused with Late Blight. Early Blight is not as rapidly lethal, and the symptoms are not the same. It can also be controlled with fungicides. If your plants had Late Blight they'd be dead in a week. Late blight lives in organic plant tissue and debris remaining on the soil but freezing kills it. Early blight is not killed by freezing. All that said, starting plants from seeds yourself is certainly a good idea, but Late Blight is wind- and rain-borne, so if you have healthy plants to begin with, that's no guarantee that Late Blight won't infect them if it's in your area. Fungicides may or may not be a control. The Tomato forum has excellent discussions about the differences in the two blights, where they're a problem, their identification and control. Go to that forum and search within that forum for "blight" to find the discussions.

Hey Carol If you want seeds - just ask! I'm sure there are lots of people around here that would send them to you for free (or posteage) so you can learn. We all want you to have fun with this! I can probably send you some - let me see what the deer have left me, the stupid hooved devils denuded a bunch of my plants last night :-( As far as growing instructions, there are as many ways to start them as there are hosta growers. Truth be known, tse seeds have sprouts in them that WANT to grow. We just need to provide an opportunity for them. I am attachgin a link to Bob Axemears site - great info on growing hosta seeds here. When I get the Brandy Boy seeds I'll let you know the country of origin. Wal-Mart is well-known for pushing hard to get companies to pack products specifically for them that they can sell at the price they negotiate. During the last several years, the Burpee seed packs on the seed racks in Wal-Mart have had ever-decreasing seed counts. From comments posted on garden forums, it was clear that gardeners were noticing the lower seed counts and were not happy. Gone Fishin' and I both noticed the difference in Burpee tomato seed counts about 3 or 4 years ago. You could buy a packet of Burpee Porterhouse seed on-line for about $4.00 or $4.25 back then and get about 45 to 50 seeds--I don't remember the exact amount. You also could get Burpee Porterhouse on the seed rack at Wal-Mart for $1.37 a pack, but each pack only had 7 to 9 seeds. So, you actually would have spent more at Wal-Mart to get 40-50 seeds of Burpee Porterhouse. Of course, not many people want to plant 40-50 seeds of one variety in a home garden, so you could argue that the Wal-Mart Burpee seed packs were "sized-down" for the convenience of home gardeners. I noticed the same small seed counts with Burpee Highlight Zinnia on the racks at Wal-Mart either last year or the year before. I got 50 seeds in the Burpee mail-order packet for a higher price that was probably $4.00 or $4.50. Then, out of curiousity, I bought the same Burpee Highlight Zinnia (new that year) at Wal-Mart to test my theory about lower seed counts. I bought 4 packs for either $1.07 or 1.37 and each of them had 8 to 11 seeds. So, something is going on and I just wonder if Burpee got tired of selling smaller and smaller seed count packages because, if the consumer got mad about the smaller seed counts, you can bet they blamed Burpee and not Wal-Mart. It could have become a PR issue that Burpee just didn't need. There's also the possibility that F-M did commit to using U.S.-grown seed. I don't know. There's even the possibility that Burpee, which is after all a premier name in the seed industry, negotiated better deals for itself with Lowe's and Home Depot (and we don't have a K-Mart near us, but I know they've had Burpee seeds in recent years too) and that they dumped Wal-Mart. Sound far-fetched? Maybe, but it wouldn't surprise me. I ordered five packets of seeds from Stokes Seeds recently, and they just arrived the other day. Here's what I got and their nation of origin. Note that each variety had a different nation of origin: Tomato--Mountain Fresh Plus VFFN (India) Tomato--Mountain Glory VFFF/TSWV (Thailand) Watermelon--Yellow Doll (Peru) Rudbeckia--Bright Star (Germany) Liatris Spicata--Kobold (Holland) They all were stamped with the "country of origin" but then also were stamped "packed in Canada" (Stokes is a Canadian company, I think, although they have a U.S. sales branch). What does this mean? It tells me the seed companies are probably buying seeds from whichever grower in whichever country gives them the best wholesale price. Who can blame them? Would I prefer to buy only U.S.-grown seed. Of course, I would always prefer to keep jobs in the U.S. But, judging from the meager selection on the F-M racks at Wal-Mart, the number of varieties grown in the U.S for major seed companis is rather small.

Oh, this is just for us - we'll plant as many as we can in the space we have, I'm on the waiting list for the farmer's market, so we'll sell excess there or I'll just can them. My family goes through a lot of salsa and spaghetti sauce. Once we find ones that *we* like (and customers like if we bring any to market), we'll continue to plant those, this year is a trial. But I am looking for salsa/sauce types, I used the Celebrity last year but am thinking paste type would be better. I don't waste anything, I made tomato juice from the "guts" after seeding and peeling for salsa, but it takes a lot of tomatoes (forget how many Celebrity) for 8C of solids. New law in CT allows residential farmers to sell acidified foods w/o a commercial kitchen (or filing with FDA), but they're still working out the pH testing, food safety training, and record-keeping requirements so I don't know if I'll sell any canned goods this year. I have had requests for salsa and pickles, but this year's products might have to be for our own (and friends') use. I was looking more for what does well in this area, and some opinions on taste, both for fresh eating and for salsa and sauce. If I say I like G. Johnsons, will Brandywine be good? Is Glacier early but tasteless? Is Speckled Roman tastier than Amish Paste? Are they too small to bother with after peeling and seeding, etc.? Customers at this market are affluent and heirlooms seem to sell well but I don't even know if we'll be allowed to bring them in since there are already people selling them. We are looking more for a market for our berries (my cousins and I together) and my jams, acidified foods is possible/cost effective. My cousin (actually my uncle) grow PYO blueberries, I have wild blackberries and blueberries, and we all have grown large veggie gardens (that have supplied the extended family) in the past but nobody has ever marketed anything. There is a town-sponsored CSA here that has asked me to supply produce/products but I said I can't promise 25 of something on Thursday and 25 more of the same thing on Saturday - again, they've got lots of veggies, they're not looking for another source for tomatoes (I'll ask if they want "sustainably-grown" heirlooms from organic seed next year, but I won't be certified) but they want berries, jam, jelly, salsa, pickles when/if possible.

All of my WS tomato seeds as well as my cucumber seeds have germinated, and within a couple of weeks of sowing them. Still waiting on the peppers.

I used the 8 oz. water bottles as individual WS containers by only putting in one seed each container. Worked out just fine. The next thing I am going to try is corn as I will be attempting to grow my own corn this year. I can't justify paying so much for any vegetable, especially corn!

WS your seeds, and if you feel like saving one or two of each just in case, where is the harm in that either?

Could she use the tolit tissue holders,fill with soil,put tomato seed,and place in baggie with air holes?

fibromyalgia, she should read any of Peter D'Adamo's books and apply his diet stratagies.

What can it hurt to read it and see if it strikes a chord with her?)

My daughter does every thing the natural way,no med's.

She has changed her diet 100%,along with every aspect of her life,sure slows a person down,she has three children,and there are more times than not that when out at play,all she can do is watch,not engage.It is a horrible affliction.

Alberta, i am so sorry you too are a sufferer,you know all to well how life changing this can be.Happy to see you are still gardening, so is my daughter,such good therapy for the mind and soul.Keep it up. :0)

I WSed a bunch of different tomato seeds this year and had a good number sprout. I say try it and see what happens!

I 2nd covering or bringing in Tom seedlings in case of late frost. I lost several seedlings because I didn't last year. So far no spouts and that's a good thing given our crazy spring weather this year LOL!

I have Fibro and Chronic Fatigue too. I get "relapses" under extreme stress, but never over the years have they been as bad as the first time around; thank goodness. I hope she improves.

There certainly is something therapeutic about gardening. I feel closer to God in the garden than just about anywhere else.

Vera, I purchased strawberry popcorn seed as well, and am pretty excited about it :) I remember reading, not sure where, the best way to pop it is to put the whole head in a paper bag and pop in the microwave.

In addition, I purchased Hopi Blue Corn and Painted Mountain. I just got sample packs of all the corn, as I don't have that much room. I'm not sure how many rows to do, as I've heard I need at least two for cross-pollination. In any case, it should be fun to try, and the kids love corn, so they will be quite excited.

Let me tell you if I didn't have my gardening they would be taking me out of the house in a straight jacket. For me the hardest part of gardening is kneeling down and bending, to plant. But I have a whole bunch of grandkids that help when I ask and they do pretty good for themselves.

Yes, gardening is a gift to nourish both body and soul.
My daughter went ahead with her WSing yesterday,it was 70,and a good day to be sitting out side and playing in the dirt.She was happy to know she would be just fine with it.
