Need help picking the perfect flowering memorial tree

Hi My daughter passed away this past winter and we are planting a tree this fall as a memorial to her. I live in Dallas and ideally would like to plant a flowering tree in our front yard in her memory. It gets direct afternoon sun. What would you recommend for flowering trees. I like it to look more of a "tree" single trunk instead of bush like. Any suggestions would be helpful as I dont know a whole lot about trees.

Not to be insensitive, but....

I happen to think you knew your daughter better than we. While you may not know much about trees...this is only tangentially about trees.

What favorites did she have? Colors, flowers, seasons. Do you have memories associated with places that had certain types of trees, parks, playgrounds.

By the way, name a plant and I'll find reasons why you'd be foolush to consider it, then I'll confuddle you and tell you why it is the only plant worth considering. But like I said...this is not primarily about the tree.

Dogwoods have an apocryphall story about shape and coloring of flowers.
Redbud is a harbinger of spring, one of the first signs of life and the promise of the new season to come.
Magnolia...little can compare with a magnolia in full bloom. Different kinds may have rich fragrance, incredible wax-like almost unreal coloring, evoking comparisons to paradise.

Sourwood is another possibility.

Whatever you choose, my condolences. And may the memories be cherished.

Two suggestions. I don't know your soil in Dallas, but I do know that you get more rain than we do here in Temple.

My favorite tree in my yard is my Desert Willow. Why?
1. The blooms longer than anything else and does attract the occasional hummer
2. Requires very little water. As getting a tree established is difficult if you aren't there to tend to it (watering cycle).

Secondly, I'm buying an Arroyo Sweetwood this weekend at my local Master Gardener Plant Sale. Read what Roselee has to say about hers in the Butterfly Forum. I can't envision a better image than a butterfly as your daughter has been transformed from how you knew her into how God sees her now. When the day comes, and it will, she could be the first person you'll recognize when your day comes. Having experienced this myself, I know that I know. And how beautiful it could be to have something that attracts the butterflies, and has a fragrance, too.

My suggestion goes farther. Make your own memorial. Don't plant just a tree, but a couple of "Everblooming" Lynn's Legacy Texas Cenizo. You'll have to hunt for it like I did. But, you can find it. I'd plant three in a semi arc around the tree. At the base, I'd put a sandblasted stone with whatever your most favorite saying or memory was. Be it an upright boulder or a horizontal flat rock. There are sooo many beautiful sayings. That might also be a beautiful place to put a bench, too. It will give you a place to go to be near her. God honors our efforts and recognizes our prayers. What a wonderful mother you must be to have been so blessed to have done right by her and raised her in the very best way you knew how. We don't come home with instruction manuals, but there's one that's been given to us that tops them all. May God lighten your load and ease your burden as he works toward lifting your pain.

rebel & revel, Bur oak, Q.macrocarpa, is native to both your states, tolerant of a wide range of soil types & pHs, is tough as nails once established, and in my experience growing seedling selections over the past 15 years, will grow as fast as any other oak - and will challenge some of the maples - but they're not brittle or prone to wind or ice damage. Largest leaves of the North American oaks, corky bark, even on 1-2 yr old twigs, the quintessential 'stately(or spooky )old tree' when mature. Not much in the way of fall color, but they're great the other 49 weeks of the year. Local biotypes will be your best bet, but I've noted fastest growth on seedlings from acorns collected in the southern/midwestern portions of its native range(OK, TX, MO)

I havn't planted them yet. They aren't being delivered till Tuesday. The Geijera was actually the one I was worried about. She told me I could trim the bottom off so that only the top hung over the fence if it got that big but she didn't seem to think it would. I wasn't sure if she was saying that to get me to buy the tree though. I'm always paranoid :) I am still quite worried about that tree. My husband starting digging a hole for it about 4 feet from the fence and I don't think that's going to be big enough. The plant said Geijera parvifolia and she looked up geijera parviflora which said 20 feet in diameter. Are they the same plant? Would it be possible for me to just keep the bottom trimmed so only the top was bushy? I don't think it would work any other way. Andrea

I would go with either a saucer magnolia - we have a HUGE one in the front of our house or a crabapple tree. Both are very hardy. I've never had any luck with Eastern redbud - lost them twice to the cold temps. As for the yellow magnolia, "Elizabeth", she's pretty, but I would try and find the yellow variety called, "Butterflies". It's got beautiful vibrant yellow flowers with a touch of slight reddish tone inside the flower. Google it. I just bought one! Another yellow one is "Sunsation". Stunning yellow flowers with a pink overcast in the base. I love magnolias, but they do need to be sited in areas that don't get a lot of wind.

I do LOVE my red push pistache and I recommend them to many clients who want a beautiful shade tree. I do not think they are messy. Of course they go dormant so you need to be ok with no leaves in the winter. But each tree will act different depending on the temp where it is planted. I saw 2 today full of leaves! The pistache requires more water than our desert trees. The difference with the citrus is that you will want to do deep watering often in the summertime. You must be careful though and make a well around the trunk as you do not want the citrus trunk to ever get wet. You also want to fertilize the citrus and be sure to paint the trunks in the spring so they do not get burnt in the summer. I would stay away from the sissoos. Once you have them they will spread roots looking for water. If they reach grass you can bet on little babies popping up everywhere! I am an arborist and I cannot tell you how many we have removed in the past 5 years. Once removed none of the root system can have any water or sunlight or you will be sure to have babies everywhere. You definitely have room for the swan hill olive (fruitless variety) and I agree that they are super clean. They will send suckers up at the base all the time and you will want to cut these back. I really like the tipu tree also. It does get very large, has beautiful leaves and small yellow flowers. it will defoliate late winter and immediately send new leaves out again. Below is a baby and a close up of the leaves. I was really glad to see you have the trees spaced far apart. So many times trees are planted too close and end up competing for sun. I hate removing trees for this reason. Good luck!

i am sorry for your loss ... so please accept the below with that in mind ...

i am always at a loss with these living memorials ... the plant dies .. you end up moving ... etc .... only creating more and more stress over the years ...

if it were me.. i would buy a poured concrete memorial ... an angel??? .. or something like that.. which would last for an eternity ... and would be portable ... should you have to move ...

and would attach all my memories to that ...

and then build a garden around it.. a garden which is an honor to the memorial.. but which is not 'forever' .. plants come and go over the years.. plagues.. pestilence.. etc ... i am sure you dont want to relive the loss of garden plant at a later date ...

i can not tell you how many times.. here in GW i have run across posts like this.. where the poster is distraught.. because some few years down the line.. the plant is failing ... and the wound is reopened ... and what are we left to suggest ... man its tough ...

soooo ... a cherub .. angel .. a harley davidson [dont know your sweetie well enough to be specific] ...

think about it .. i will offer a prayer for you ... and do take care ...

I, too, am sorry for your loss.

One of my favorite trees is the Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (Amelanchier). It's an airy tree that gets white flowers in early spring, then blue, edible berries (which birds love and people can eat them too) in early summer. In the fall, the tree turns scarlet. It's just a remarkable plant.
