Way Way too Much....

Oh my aching back! I planted out just a couple Rudbeckia and alyssum containers last night and I am not sure what I am going to do!

I planted lots of containers, wow!

No pity from me. I'm thinking of just giving half of mine away. Just gave away 4 pots of columbine.

I've planted out a few containers, but still have lots of work to do to get the garden ready for more. Husband promised to help, but of course he's on a long golf weekend with his buddies in Williamsburg. Figures, right?

This thread keeps being resurrected. I assume that these guys have customers of some sort or another since they are still in business and I further assume that you are similar to the typical customer. Which is to say: you are using this injector in in-ground soil with a dry granular fertilizer similar to miracle gro. Ok, fine. You set it up and it appears to be working for you. But have you checked? Do you have a high quality EC meter with which you can monitor the concentration of the fertilizer that is being applied to your plants? I have one and I've checked (something they say on the website we could do but they hope that we'll "trust them"). The unit does not function as advertised even using the typical dry granular fertilizer. And yet you are still happy with it. Why? Because you see plants that are in your view doing fine and you see the fertilizer being used eventually. The fact that there is unevenness in application is not apparent to you from the plant (because you don't have consistent applications to compare it to) nor from testing of the output from the unit. But it *is* to me and it *should* be to you. The fact that you're almost certainly using mineral soil will mitigate some of the downsides of the unit - but you'd still be much better off with a steady application of a known quantity of fertilizer. Plant vigor would increase and you would have better control over the timing of concentration at certain times of the year. Anyone who will be happy with the fact that this unit will take fertilizer and in some way or another put it on your plants at some dosage or another will be happy with the unit! *That is not what they say it will do.* To answer some of your questions: No, they did not offer me a refund. For that I would have had to send it back to the company from which I purchased it - at my expense. The acid has nothing to do with anything. I also tested this unit with straight liquid fertilizer (with which they claim the unit will function as advertised - it doesn't) - and I had the same result. I was attempting to use it with acids at first, but when that didn't work I did further testing and found the unit doesn't function as advertised in *any* scenario that I tested. Here's the thing: if this unit does not apply fertilizer in a consistent concentration (and it emphatically does *not* do that) - then what is the POINT of the unit? Anyone who wants fluctuating concentrations of fertilizer should just be applying a dry granular product directly to the soil. And - most importantly - using the correct dry products directly in the soil one could almost certainly achieve more even concentration of available fertilizer than with this unit! Get yourself some sulfur coated urea or polymer coated urea products (or equivalent) and your plants would be better off, you will likely have saved money on the fertilizer itself, and you will not have had to purchase this sham of a product. Or if you want more control then spring for a quality fertilizer injector that does the job a fertilizer injector is supposed to do: provide consistent concentration of fertilizer for maximum plant vigor and control. There are quite a few companies which make products that work. Some are even in the same price range as this piece of junk (venturi injectors) though they still have the downsides discussed in earlier posts.

Sorry, I didnÂt give all the details! Let me try again! Here's the amount of gas FILLED INTO TANK: 450 gal on July 1 (when I moved into the house); 470 gal on Nov 18 (when tank went unexpectedly totally empty). 180 gal on Dec 8 (thatÂs the "regular" delivery that the company scheduled long ago before the emergency delivery in Nov). 240 gal on Jan 2 (thatÂs an "extra" delivery to gauge if the situation improved after the tiny leak was finally repaired on Nov 28 - unfortunately no "improvement"). This makes a total of 1260 gal from July 1-Jan 2 (i.e. 6 months). The gas supplierÂs records show that previous tenants used around 1,100-1,200 gallons PER YEAR. ThatÂs the figure I relied on when I rented the house and used as my budget. That also agrees with internet "gas calculators" I used. I also tried to calculate according to seasons (based again on figures given by the supplier and other general sources). HereÂs the breakdown: Summer (July, Aug, Sep) 15 weeks x 10gal/wk = 150 gal. Fall (Oct, Nov) 8 wks x 20gal/wk = 160 gal. Winter (Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar) 16 wks x 48gal/wk = 768 gal. Spring (Apr, May, Jun) 13 wks x 15 gal/wk = 195 gal. Total is 1,195 gal, which ties in well with the 1,200 gal figure in the above paragraph. (Of course this is an approximation and the weather each year is important. Incidentally, this past fall and winter - so far - has been less cold than "normal".) One more figure to mention: gas rep said theyÂd estimate that for the past 25 days (Dec 8-Jan 2), my usage should be 6-7 gal/day. That means when they filled the tank on Jan 2, it should have been 150-175 gal. But they needed to put in 240 gal. Where did the extra 70-90 gals go?! And where did gas in the summer and fall months go? Based on the above calculations, I reckoned that from July 1- Dec 8 I should have used about 360 gals. But a whopping 920 gals disappeared in that period!! (By the way, the company only gave me 50 gal credit for the "tiny leak". Should they give me MORE CREDIT?) As for dollar amount, price here in Massachusetts is around $2.45/gal. I paid for the first tank of 450 gal in July Â over $900 (trusting that it should at least last the summer and fall, but that didnÂt happen.) I paid another $500 in December while negotiating with the supplier and landlord, and I am happy to pay a few hundred dollars more this month. But even so, I still owe them plenty because they have provided 1260 gal. (I wonÂt bore everyone with more figures - enough math for one post!) Does this make sense? Where did I go wrong? Wow you guys rock!!! Ok I'm being somewhat lazy on the sewing thing now (yes I can do it but I have to finish this house before we move in the fall so I haven't gotten to it). I figure in the future I'll be able to fix his jeans myself (thanks for the ideas....I was going to search that later LOL) but sheesh, just from this group of posts I found six pairs of jeans :) I bought the Calvins and the Wranglers, and am working on the rest :) Old Navy and Gap are unfortunately too big even cinched up on the last button hole of the adjustable waists. Lisa my husband caught this thread right at the big butt comment...we lost our drinks :oP The man-pries was a good one too LOL We'll start a new fashion :) I have to admit, I hate draw string pants and sweats. I know someday I'll have to give in to his wishes for comfort, but until he whines, I want a more tailored look...they look so much better with his collection of knit golf vests (he'll kill me for telling anyone about that when he's older LOL) I've had great luck at a place called "Once Upon A Child" which sells used baby cloths. I haunt the rack for anything by Polo (they fit skinny kids really well) but as he gets bigger (ok taller) I ssee less and less of them. Ok back to my wine as I shop :) Really thanks all for the fabulous ideas :) You rock!!

Don't plant a Magnolia if you're worried about mess. Someone planted one 50 years ago next to our pool. It is absolutely beautiful and give great shade to the south side of the house, BUT it is very, very messy. The large leaves drop all year, heaviest in the spring, and they take years to decompose. In the summer the beautiful flowers drop bud sheaths and then petals. Later in fall, heavy cones drop and bring tons of squirrels who pull them apart after the seeds and leave a mess everywhere. Plus the cones are kinda spiky, painful if you accidentally step on one, plus a tripping hazard. So yes, a beautiful majestic tree...for the outer edges of a property, not near a patio. You have been warned, lol. The Africarpus gracilior is a pretty good choice, they do get huge with age, but are fast and pretty clean, and handle heat and soil compaction well. Josue Diaz's suggestion of Brachychiton populneus is a good choice too, lovely tree, too tender for where I am, but should do great for you. Stan's suggestion of a Tristaniopsis laurina is a good one too, but pretty slow growing. If you want shade soon, I'd get the largest one you can find. It will be expensive, but save you several years waiting. I love Ficus microcarpa (Indian Laurel)! Beautiful tree, gorgeous white smooth trunk! I just got back from visiting my daughter in San Luis Obispo and the downtown streets are lined with them and they're very majestic. Do be aware that they can get very large buttress roots with age, but if you give them lots of root room near the patio, but not right next to or in the patio, they should be fine.

I have lots of baseball games to attend this weekend.

I had to plant out a lot of the seedlings last night in the dark. lol

I will be out in the dark again this weekend.

Karen, though I never used it much, I actually bought myself one of those flashlight headbands for planting out in the dark in year two!!! Maybe you should get one?

Stay calm. It will all either get planted out or stay in its container for awhile and that is ok. Put "screaming to get out" containers in dabbled shade near a sprinkler you can just turn on and walk away. It's kind of like an exhausted parent plopping the toddler down and turning on the TV - as awful as it is, soemtimes its best for both of you to avoid anyone getting hurt!!!!

For the body aches - I am a bid fan of Aleve "all day strong" 220mg gel caps. I take one when I get in from the garden (7pm, 8pm?) and it starts to work, then has enough power to get me through to morning and waking up able to move again. Do NOT take two to "get more relief". Even these over the counter pills are bad for you in big doses.

Also, while I always feel too attached to give my babies (sprouts) away, it is inevitable when you just plain run out of dirt and I feel a whole lot less negative if I just give away "chunks" and don't have to go through the bother of "potting up" for gift receivers. I just keep a bunch of milk jug bottoms around to make " mixed variety packs" of chunks for friends who can then plant them out in their gardens. They're happy, I'm happy.

I guess I worry the HOA will get on my case if I leave all those containers out there.

I wish I could take aleve. I miss it so much. I have Crohn's and can't take anything but tylenol. And sometimes that is just not enough. (also have fibryomylgia, lucky me)

I have been told about the light before. I am really going to get one now. It will make it much easier. I checked the alyssum i planted out in the dark and it was an ok job.

Now more planting tonight....HOS 1/2 to whole containers.

Karen that light might be a big help. Good idea Nancy. I too have fibromyalgia, and the extreme heat wipes me out.I am freq up at night anyway when I cant sleep.

It's amazing how many plants come from just "those few (hundred) containers". I think we're all guilty of our eyes being bigger than our gardening space or our avialble time...

Don't put so much pressure on your self girls,& guys.
Last year, I did not get to all my containers,not even by late fall, they stayed under a tree all winter, in their orignal sowed in containers,and they lived.
Do a little at a time, they will be just fine if you wait a few weeks.

tonight, I tackled more Ruds and all my creeping thyme.

The positive is I sowed lots of the same flowers. SO I have a bunch of the same and I am picking a 2 flowers at a time.

I sure sowed a lot of creeping thyme. It was able to go completely around the beds that go around my house every foot or so. WOW that is a lot of THYME! I am excited about it!

I guess some staying in containers is not bad but my containers are in my veggie bed. oops...

I will focus on the containers that the HOA would hate the most (those blue water cooler bottles are going next)

Thanks for the encouragement. It was cool outside tonight so I did well and it is only 640pm.

Off to shower now....I love getting dirty!

Karen, it's not too early in our area? I have planted a few things and they are doing fine. Whatever you are doing is certainly encouraging. I have very ambitious plans for the weekend and I took Mon off. Hope, I'll empty a "few" containers.

Also, I still have to do some sowing. I guess, right now, the correct name is spring sowing (SS?). Thank you nan-6161! Advil for me tomorrow.

adamark everything I am planting out is a perenial and has second set of leaves. (actually some have more than second set of leaves)

you can plant out stuff now, these ws plants are so strong! Plus I have perenials in my garden sprouting and some are flowering so I figure it is safe to plant out now.

I do try to keep them wet for the first week or so though. I water with a mist for 30 minutes-1 hour so my beds get a nice soak and not just a quick water.

Go ahead and plant some stuff out. Last year I did some in March (poppies)

Adamark - I mentioned Aleve, not Advil. Might be "the same active ingrediant" though. Does the Advil have noproxen? That's the kicker in Aleve that works much better for me than motrin for soem reason.

We have one of those lights for picking up dog poo in the dark. LOL! I was thinking the other day I could use it for planting out after dark, too. :) Haven't had to resort to that yet. I did have to take a week off work to get everything straight in the front yard.

I don't take anything but Tylenol products either, so hot baths are it for me. I use Epsom Salts and that seems to help a lot. If I get in the tub, as hot as I can stand it, right after I come in, it usually knocks the soreness out and I'm better the next day.

Would you believer it? Hod to go to a Hoe Down last night. Haven't square danced in 40 years. Can hardly move this morning and have to go plant and plant and plant. Oh well, I did this to myself.

I can only take tylenol no aleve or advil. Both can cause bleeding for me, plus I get a horrible tummy ache.

I am sore today but all I have to do is watch my kid's baseball tournament.

I am going to water the plants some then back to games.
