So I don't lose them again soon, here's the results from my other 2005 informal gardenweb survey, "What are your favorite two roses?"

Hi all,

Here are the updated standings: Folks named 117 varieties overall and even more austins and few more golden oldies were added. Double Delight still continues to lead the pack.

Quietness and Distant Drums! And the next two would be (of modern roses) Paradise and Color Magic. Two easy to go, two not but SO rewarding..

Interestingly, Frederic Mistral is not even on the list.

What's so good about double delight? A lot of people like this rose, but last time when I took a sniff at a garden center, I don't like the scent.

Along with the great advice that bunnygurl offered, keep it in the most warmest and sunniest spot in your home, and it will thrive...preferably a south facing window sill.. Also be aware of pests..In particular thrips and mites..;-) No need for fertilzer all winter if it is kept cool. If kept warm, 1/4 strentgh at waterings.. Goodluck... Mike..

I'll second the Tasha Tudor. So gorgeous and enchanting. I'm also a big fan of Henry Mitchell and Allan Lacy. But what about Mrs. Greenthumbs? Her first one is so very funny. and inspiring. How often do you laugh out loud at a gardening book. (Mitchell when he's in one of his grumps does elicit chuckles but who can forget Mrs. Greenthumbs mixing Mai tais, entertaining relatives, cursing magenta?) I give her book to new gardeners and tell them, read it and adopt this attitude and your garden will be a thing of beauty and a joy forever. I also give a copy of Jeff Cox's 100 Perennial All Stars. Terrific. Also loved, loved the Larkwhistle book. Patrick Lima and John Scanlan. One garden through the year with terrific insights and tips. Beautiful. This one truly inspires. Maybe the favorite.

nighthawk ; Yes, I am very familiar with the tastes of the VP, Glenn and Kent. The Glenn was my very first tree, planted in my yard in Islamorada, Fla in the Upper Keys. I knew nothing back then, - bought and planted it at the strong suggestion of Armando, a Cuban immigrant gardener working at Ray's Nursery in Homestead. Realizing I had a small lot and that it was my 1st tree, and most likely my only tree, he unhesitatingly recommended it. The Cuban's know their mango's, and I've been indebted to him ever since. If I met someone who could only plant one tree, I would strongly recommend a Glenn. It has it all, medium size, early season, scrumptiously delicious fruit with no fiber, and best of all, a fantastic producer. That tree has always out produced any of my other trees. Then, after moving, I planted a Kent and fell in love with the taste. Taste is subjective I realize, but IMHO Kent has the best taste,....just a notch above a Glenn. Then planted a Valencia Pride & was amazed at the size and looks of the late season fruit. Seeing how big the fruits ( and tree ) were, I half expected the flavor to be not so hot. Boy was I wrong ! Surprisingly, it was absolutely delicious, again IMHO. Just a tad less delicious than a Glenn. So there you have it, so far my top tasting three mango's, - am down to only 4 trees now. Besides the Glenn & Kent, I have a Tebow ( new tree, tasted a few, give it an 9.0 out of ten), and a Carrie, ( also a new tree, no fruits so far, jury is still out ). Had a Pickering in ground for 3 yrs, neither me nor most of my " favorite recipients " cared for them much. Not a bad taste but " no me gusta " as we say in Costa Rica ! lol Just curious, where in 9b are you located ?

There is a treasure trove of information on OGRs on google, specifically google books. It's harder to get into now than it used to be, but the info is there. East coasters and southern rose growers need to (at least) know that Mary C. Rion's Ladies' Southern Florist has excellent chapters on growing roses. Ladies Southern Florist has been in my library since 2008 (a second copy arrived as a Christmas gift from a good friend that winter). Amazon has them used; I willingly paid full price and would again.

Wow! You've got quite a list there! It shows that roses grow different for folks in different areas.

I'm not sure how well I can respond to this question. My favorite rose is Gruss an Aachen. Has been, always will be.

As for the second favorite? I have about 65 roses that are pushing for second place. If I go by the ones I cut the most often, in this order:

Double Delight
Patio Pearl
Hot Cocoa
Liberty Bell
Sassy Cindy
Chicago Peace
Touch of Class
