My guess is that there is no plant that, merely by its presence in your garden, would deter a mosquito. Your best bet, I would think, is to go the route suggested by hoovb and encourage mosquito predators. It happens that this evening, as I sat on the patio, I observed once again huge dark dragonflies snapping up a number of flying insects, including mosquitos. There are times you can actually hear the snap as they grab them. Once, in Massachusetts long ago, as dragonflies were hunting moths, I saw the severed wings of each pale moth they captured floating down afterwards. Magical, if a little macabre. (Okay, I'm an ecologist.) The dragonflies breed in and emerge from the little lily pond I keep, with mosquito fish (Gambusia, not hardy everywhere, but there are substitutes) to consume mosquito larvae (it's a 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock pond sunk into the ground, a setup that over 4 years so far has maintained decent ecosystem dynamics with not much effort on my part and no pumps -- talk about easy!). ~ Debbie

I also love snow in summer and I also plant mother of thyme around my roses that get full sun, I try and plant my companion plants that need little water with roses that are also water wise. I live near Oakland California and we get 3-4 months of drought every year, and temps are usually in summer in the 80'sF. I only water my Old Garden Tea roses: Duchess de Brabant Mrs Dudley Cross Monsieur Tillier Mme. Alfred Carrier (TeaxNoisette rose) and my Noisette Catos Cluster once a month to once every two months during summer drought, so I've planted snow in summer and mother of thyme around those roses. Because these roses bloom well in partial shade, and because it is cooler and the moisture doesnt evaporate as fast I plant violets there and only in partial shade by Cornelia Lavender Dream Crepescule Rosa moschata Nastarana Lux

Kay- It's good to know cleome can reseed. That was one thing I meant to ask. It sounds like a great plant with the roses! Woodyoak- Clematis is always beautiful with roses. I have two metal arches in the fairy garden. Purple clematis would be perfect :) Aimeekitty- Again, your garden is beautiful! I have lavender, but it's Hidcote lavender, which is much hardier here. Catmint and salvia do well here...maybe the penstemon, but I'm not sure about the others. I do envy you your star jasmine. I just love that stuff, so I buy two small bushes at Lowe's every spring (only about $5 each) and put them in big pots, surrounded by white petunias. If I ever get enough money for a sunporch....it will be for star jasmine and an orange tree!!! LOL

It has been a long time since you posted that you had garlic and onions, but I'll take a chance. Mostly what I have to trade are seeds. Take a look for yourself. I also have paw paw seeds. I do have some veggies and lots of flower seeds. Please let me know if we can trade. THANKS!!
