importing pictures to windows 8.1

I upgraded(?) to windows 8.1 last week. I am now trying to import the photos I just took this morning of my YL.

My PC no longer automatically imports from my camera.
I went online looking for an answer, but they were fuzzy at best.

DO ANY OF MY FELLOW ROSE LOVERS KNOW HOW TO UPLOAD PHOTOS TO 8.1????

Not sure how you connect to your computer whether via a card reading slot or cable. Either way you should be able to click on 'My Computer' and find the appropriate disk. Then copy and paste to a directory on your PC.....BUT I have very limited experience with winblows LOL!!

Hope that helps if not someone can chime in as I absolutely have no idea regarding import software.

Owbist and azbound... Following your advice, I had Belarc do a computer profile summary of my laptop. I do see a product key listed with this endnote: "e. This may be the manufacturer's factory installed product key rather than yours. You can change it to your product key using the procedure at http://www.belarc.com/msproductkeys.html." I followed the link to change my product key, but alas, the operating systems listed only went to Windows 7. I've been on google for an hour and can only find dead links on how to do this in Win 8.1. Laptop was purchased online BestBuy so I doubt the store will help me. I will check their site or contact the store today if I get the chance. How big an issue is this if I leave what seems to be the factory installed product key as is?

I'm facing the same dilemma. I have two machines I don't want to trash. They were expensive and I put the best in them, 6 years ago. They run like a dream and I have no intention of dumping them. I also don't have the money to replace them. I pisses me off that I am forced to deal with two computers which have no issues at all. On the other hand, I also have an Iphone and IPad. I'm not crazy about Apple and how proprietary they are. I prefer Windows because everything runs on it. I don't want to deal learning a new operating system, although Windows 8 seems to be a challenge. I have a Windows 8 laptop collecting dust in the closet. I will have to deal with it eventually, but my XP machines keep me grounded and don't require the time and energy to start over. My gut feeling is Windows 8 will be another Vista. MS is going to have to make some major changes to Win8. People who work for a living are not happy with the new operating system. I want to wait this out. Apple is a slim possibility, but I would rather wait to see what Microsoft does in the near future to improve the 'workability' of Windows 8. Jane

I had a bedroom a tiny bit bigger than this in my first apartment. I think it was 8' x 8.5'. I had a double bed and one side had to be against a wall because of the position of the door and the closet and the bathroom door (the bathroom was entered through the bedroom). I was able to fit a small nightstand and a dresser in the room, but nothing else. Because I lived alone, I had free use of the rest of the apartment, so I didn't spend much time in the bedroom. So a question I have for you is, who will be living in this room and how much of the rest of the house will they have access to? Do they need a computer or tv in the bedroom, for example? Will the occupant have to store everything they own in this room or is there space in the rest of the house for some of their things? If I had to do it over again, I'd get a good closet system in the closet, to maximize every inch of storage space. It might be possible, with the right closet system, to store all clothing in the closet, negating any need for a dresser. Bonus if additional storage space for other things could be created. An alternative to a nightstand is to mount a small shelf on the wall next to the bed. However, if there is room for a nightstand, it would add extra storage. Traditional nightstands might be too big, but you could Google "telephone table" to find some smaller, yet still tall enough, tables that would work. A small bookcase would also add storage. And if a tv is wanted/needed, it could either be wall-mounted or go on top of the bookcase. A bed that allows for underbed storage is also a good idea. Use the vertical space on the walls. You could run a shelf all the way around the room, just above the tops of the doors. I saw a lovely room once where they had put shelves just above the windows. There are also a great many wall-hung organizers that would work, or pegboard. As for decorating, I think a simple color scheme is best. Too many colors and patterns in a really small space can be overwhelming. I'm linking to a studio apartment I just saw on Apartment Therapy. The main color there is white, but you could switch that out to just about any color that the occupant of the room likes. Even though this studio is larger than the room you have, you can pull some ideas from it. The use of one color in most of the room to unify everything, the double purpose credenza that is part nightstand and part storage, the wall-mounted shelving and the two tall bookcases that take advantage of the vertical space, the use of open space to add the sense of more room--not cramming every corner with stuff helps to make the room feel larger,. Window/door trim: how important is matching every room?

I would definitely notice because I am just a tad obsessed with trim, and I consider a variety of trim to be a feature, not a mistake. In fact, in houses where everything matches, especially if it's boring trim, my eye desperately wanders the place in search of variety! I realize that's unusual. The rules of decorating to objective standards do dictate matching or at least harmonizing trim, and it can have a nice unifying effect. I think the primary question is really this: do YOU care if your trim all matches? Do you want to meet an objective standard (for example, to put the house on the market), or just your own? If you do care, then the other question is: what kind of trim do you want in your house? If you like the original, then you want to at least harmonize with that as per your plan. But if you don't like the original anyway, I wouldn't feel bound by it at all. It doesn't really sound like something that any other trim would "clash" with, even if it's not mitred. (Unlike Palimpsest, I'm not reading that you like the original - maybe I'm missing something). You could probably do a mock-up with paper panels to see if your idea would meet your standards. FWIW, I live in what Palimpsest describes, a hundred year-old house which already had a couple of kinds of trim when we moved in, the 100-year old and the 50-year old (in the addition). I love the 100, and hate the 50, although we have lived with the 50 for 16 years and are just getting around to changing it. But we lost a bunch of the 100 because we changed some of the doorway sizes when we renovated the old part of the house at the outset. We chose one primary style then to replace it, but already can't get that one any more... it's too wide for some applications anyway... and I like different mouldings anyway... so our house is (or will be when it's all installed) a mish mash. I look down my hallway (it's a linear house) and see four successive doorways with four different trims. And yes, I even have a couple of corner-blocked openings in a houseful of mostly miters. It's possible that it works because the house is old and eclectic anyway, or because it's the opposite of open-plan, or that I just can't see that it doesn't work :-) Mitering can be difficult if you don't have either good angles or the right tools (a miter saw and accurate ways to measure and transcribe), and takes some practice. There are right and wrong ways to do it, and a correct sequence in which to do the pieces - information is, as always, available on line. If you're painting, you can fill cutting mistakes, but I suspect it would show. KarinL

Thanks for trying SCG, but Windows 8 and 8.1 are really very different (and horrible) animals. It's like using an entirely different and unrelated operating system.

On a web search I see 8.1 still has 'My Computer' from there go to 'devices and drives' anything whether a SD card inserted in a slot or a camera connected via USB or similar _should_ show up. Double click on that and from there you can open directories within to find your pictures of which you can then copy and paste to where you would like.

It is a method I prefer to use to import pictures regardless of what OS I am on. Primarily because it allows me to catalogue 'My' way but also the risk of losing pictures in a software crash is less likely.

Thanks again SCG, but the problem is, that the program won't import at all. So there is nothing on my computer to to double click on. Just not there.

I guess I should have asked before. How are you connecting to your PC?

The reason I suggest the above method was because no software is required. It is strictly manually importing from one hard device to another.

Now, if your computer isn't recognizing your camera you might have to update your drivers for that particular camera.

I was just on the phone with Microsoft for ONE HOUR!!

Windows 8.1 has a problem with my sony digital. They are expecting a 'fix' within 10 days.

I will post photos of YL leaves as soon as the fix arrives.

Bad luck!

If your camera isn't showing up in your device manager and you are using a SD card (most do) you can pick up a USB card reader for a couple bucks at most big box stores. They are quite handy.

Also check the Sony site often they might have driver/updates faster.

You can also roll back to windows 8 till the bugs are fixed in 8.1

I don't use a card. It's not the Sony driver that needs an update. It's Windows 8.1 that has the problem.

If I have to change operating systems again, I WILL SCREAM. If MS can fix their problem, I will be able to live with it , , , , for a while.

Hehe, Andrea.

Is you camera shown in device manager when plugged in? Is it a cybershot camera?

Driver update

While it says that it is for charging problems other folks with the same problem have found this to work.

From what I can see from the photography forums this is a problem but not a wide spread one with Sony cameras. I would be inclined to watch the sony website as well as contact sony support. Probably get better and faster help.

My camera is not shown in device manager (tried this first) because Windows 8.1 doesn't recognize some of the Sony products. As I said, it isn't a driver problem. I could have updated a new driver myself if that's all it was.

This is a Microsoft 8.1 problem And they are the ones that will have to fix it.

I go into "Desktop" mode on my Windows 8 machine so that it looks like the "old" way.

Does your computer have a slot for the SD card? If it does, you can remove the card from the camera, and plug it directly into the computer. The computer should then be able to read from the SD card.

So you have tried the driver update that MANY people found works?

Often there are driver problems when OS are updated and while MS may come out with a driver fix it is usually fixed faster and better by the third party hardware company. If you don't want to try what I found for you that is fine. I am done wasting my time.

Great idea, but my camera is older than my computer and the card will not work with it. But that was a GREAT idea. I couldn't wait to get home to try it, but no go. I will just have to wait for MS to recognize my camera.

I have said this before, and will repeat it. As MS has said, the problem is with 8.1 recognizing my product. I has NOTHING to do with the drivers. I can't get this version to even recognizing my camera. IF IT DID, THEN I COULD TRY FOR A DRIVER UPDATE. IT DOES NOT.

I am sorry that you don't believe MS or me, but you are wrong.

After speaking with Sony support this afternoon, my dad had a cyber shot and Viao computer (I now have but don't use), they suggested the links I provided to you. At a minimum it should allow access through device manager.

As I suggested above you can get a USB card reader, sorry I didn't clarify for
older cards as well.

I appreciate the way you treat folks that try and help you. It is no wonder others now refuse to help you.

I may be wrong but since you won't try what is suggested, as usual, we will never know.

Hi I also had difficulty importing from sd card with windows 8.1 ... I found a solution and whilst looking for answer I googled for info and spotted your post... I had to join this group just to answer 'hehehee' .... I downloaded Picasa 3 and that will give option to click on and import pics straight away from sd card to computer ... I hope that info helps you :)

Without using any specific software, can you connect the camera, by cord, to the computer?

If you CAN, and you turn the camera ON, the computer should just see the camera as an external drive, under My Computer.

If it does that, you can just mark all of the images, and copy them to where ever you need them to go.
