Iron, what is it good for?

It seems from only a preliminary test, it is essential to some roses. Somewhile ago I posted the results of a soil analyses. Berndoodle noticed the iron content and remarked that is was a bit low. So I tried some chelated iron on a couple of malingering roses. Sure enough they perked up.

What is bothering in all such conclusions is why do other roses do fine? No answer to that one unless you just say that's the way it is and move on. But there is a lingering doubt and a curiosity about why. Best guess is that there are inherent difference in the need for iron by some roses used in hybridizing. If so which ones to avoid? That is reall kettle of fish!

Maybe the practical answer is to get some ferrous sulfate (easier to apply) and put it on.
