What is the most expensive tree you ever purchased and how much did you splurge on it?

$125 for a Canary Island palm. It wasn't worth it. I bought 6 of them and 4 of them didn't survive the 2013 winter.

I just gave the ok to my landscaper to plant a European Copper Beech. $800.

There are many bonsai trees bought/sold for prices in excess of one million dollars. In other countries, patrons purchase the trees as investments and entrust them to the care of their favorite (bonsai) master. It's very common for the trees winning their category at bonsai shows in Europe & Asia, especially Asia, to never have been touched (worked on) by the owner - only the master or perhaps one of his favored apprentices, depending on the value of the tree.

You talking to me? Or is the above post for everyone in general? Your post is total BS Architectrunnerguy. 99% of homeowners/builders have a budget and getting competitive bids is SMART, NOT CHEAP. The lower bids do not have to mean the cheapest quality. I have found in every instance the opposite to be true - every time! Big names mean big overhead. I own a small business. I get business because I do better work than the big guys at a lower rate. The subs we did hire do quality work- better than any home I have ever built or lived in. Maybe I got lucky, but my framer, carpenter/sider and cabinet maker are talented.- and yes, cost less- because they are small local craftsman. Again, cheaper does not mean inferior quality. The home we're building now is simple, because we wanted it that way. And by getting lower quotes (but again, NOT lower quality) we can have extras- R60 in the attic, Bibs in the walls, two foot roof overhangs, exterior and interior LED lighting, floors wood throughout, higher quality plumbing fixtures, counters, appliances, etc. And guess what? This 'cheap' home will have NO MORTGAGE. This home is also going to be the most energy efficient home I have ever owned. But we are lucky, we can do some of the work ourselves. What is wrong with that? So we are CHEAP because we: > Researched and hired the best local talent and kept the money in the local economy. I don't know what your motivation was for your post (probably $) but it's just not true. You don't have to pay 25k to an architect or 50k to a kitchen designer to have a quality home- or to post on this forum. i would also say that since the merger with Houzz, this forum has really gone downhill. People in the building industry used to offer helpful advice here, but now all they do is try scare tactics- and not because they care, but because they want to make sure you over pay for their services. Why all the insecurity when people post about saving money and thinking outside the box some? There are always going to be people who will buy what they're selling, So what gives? And also know that there is one "pro" poster here that posts under 3 different names. I can't be the only one reading these forums for years that has noticed this. its just so deceptive and just plain wrong. I'll let you guess that one. in my opinion, I would not take any serious advice on these forums from people in the building industry - not since they merged with Houzz. But of course, that's just my "cheap", non-professional opinion.

It survived. That was a discount price for that plant. I knew it was a great deal. I played with it for about 3 years and sold it for $6000. They are just rare. They go for about $1000 an inch of stem diameter. I think E. arenarius look virtually the same and go for about $100 an inch. Look up a blue arenarius for pictures. I have about 60 of them from seedlings to big plants. I bought it mainly because I knew it was a good investment. I have a sexed pair of Dioon edule in my front yard that a garden has offered me $30,000 for the pair. The male might be as old as 400 years. They are waiting to get the money right now.

Getgoing, yes. I was not aware of mites at the time. Now I am fully aware of what plants tend to attract them. I never get mites in my cooler areas. the leaves would begin to curl, wilt and dry out. What a pain that was. The only area my gardenia plants love to be all winter in on my very cold porch. Weird. You would think they would fare much better in a warm window all winter, but dry heat and mites like to crap them out. They stayed a rich green all winter and actually budded out for spring all of them. They are all happy to this day. A rich green and flowered all summer. Another plant that hates to be outside in the cold is the Michelia Alba. I will be taking that one in very soon, but into a greenhouse or a warm room. The only down side is that it has to be sprayed every week and needs lots and lots or air movement along with humidity to do ok. I will have fun with that.

Q1:A-$200 for a 'LARGE" BnB Scarlet Oak, was working stupid amount of OT at the time, and just did not care. Tree was much much larger than I ever dreamed I would run across in Scarlet Oak (about 15 feet at the time) and the best fall color I have ever seen on any Oak.

Q2:A-Every bit of it. Tree has done fantastic. It had some problems the first year due to the ridiculousness of Summer 2011. Did I ever have to stay on top of it especially that first year. Watered EVERY day 3-4 gallons, betting the surround baked and parched soil would wick off any possible excess. Did not even whimper in the 97% as ridiculous summer 2012. Has been a champ since. Grew about 2.5 feet this year.

What is it you are trying to justify to yourself?

if i told you ... i would have to track you down.. and kill you.. before my wife found out ... lol ...

i got them all from the state forest dept for one dollar twenty five cents a piece ... even that 8 foot tri color ... lol .. wink.. wink ... oh ... that one was a bonus plant .. lol ...

I think about $40 for my Ogon shipped. Seemed high for a three foot tree at the time.

$70 for a four feet manchurian walnut, toatally worth it. One of my favorit trees now.

Hmmm... Does bonsai count?

I have not found one yet, but I would pay 500$ for a seedling size amherstia nobilis.

Not my most expensive, but the most desperate and reckless purchase, I paid 200$ for a plant halfway across the world, from a 3rd world country where one should never give 200 to a man you don't know based on their word. This someone who has never shipped a day in his life, doesn't know how to take care of plants, I needed to have the plant so bad I told him I would give him a positive review even if the plant never made it to my home. It turned out okay in the end.

I paid 300 for a bonsai juniper.

I paid 50 for a phalaenopsis so big it looked like a vanda. It had 15 sets of leaves and 7 spikes. It was almost 2 feet tall before spike, the spikes added another foot, the spikes are pretty short.

Back in the takashi amano planted aquarium days, I paid 80 for the largest anubias I'd ever seen. Now it's easily a thousand anubias. I need to do something with those.

Think I paid $25 each for a dozen or so grafted pecans & hickories, back in 1996.
Can't think of any tree that *I* have purchased that cost more than $10 in over 15 years. Grow from seed/nut/acorn or graft my own, anymore...
Wife buys an occasional crape myrtle at Lowe's...

I paid $80 for a large Mamey tree, but it did not survive in my poorly draining soil. However, I bought a cheaper white Sapote tree (makes similar fruit), and it is doing well, although I have not gotten fruit from it yet. I have more trees in planters than I do in the ground, due to my terrible soil. I do not have to worry about frost where I live, but I do have to contend with horrible soil. The soil is very hard, dry, and non-porous. The front yard is better than the back yard, however, and the Floss Silk tree that I planted there is doing very well, although after five years, it still has not bloomed. Perhaps that is why I do not see others in my neighborhood. Banana trees do well here, however.

I have a Weeping Sequoia that I call my $75 tree and I love it! Also spent too much ($170.) on a Stewartia that is doing OK, even bloomed this year but has a ways to go before becoming a favorite, I also have a very nice 25 year old + Sciadopitys verticillata that was only about a foot + tall when given to me and now it's about 15' tall or so and to me, it's priceless.

I paid $100(standard price) for a no muss/no fuss 4 foot grafted weeping caragana that withstands gale force winds, -40C to +37C temperatures and downpours from the rain gutter. Not a favorite by any means - just too common, but survives/thrives in the space it`s in where little else would.

I usually go with tiny cheap trees, but I once bought a B&B Norway spruce, I was in my old house, but that house is in my backyard of my present house, so I can still enjoy it it is really large now. It is presently my mom's cats hangout under it.

Oh yeah, the tree was about $60.00 and about 5 ft tall when bought back in 1995. It is about 35 ft tall now, and maybe 25-30 ft wide.

I spent maybe $125 on an 8 foot white oak. Then we moved away, but I still drive over to the old house to see the tree which is maybe 25' now. I am a major cheapskate, but trees are my weakness, and it was TOTALLY worth it!
