Shallot seed; planning for 2011

I did plant shallots this year but would like to afford more. If I also planted seed this year, would I be able to harvest them in early fall and save them over to next year for planting. If I could I would have a much larger number available for planting.

I live in zone 5, Western PA, and currently have my spring crop of shallots in full growth. I planted a few pounds of organic cloves as well as a few hundred indoor started transplats early in March. My clove plantings are starting to sprout bulbils right now. I figure I', 30-45 days away from harvest.

I will replant the seed starts in the fall. They will be single cloves. Over the winter they will do what alliums do - grow slowly and laugh at the cold. They'll be ready the following early summer.

I am starting indoor seeds now to suppliment my existing crop. These will be single small bulbs by August. I'll pull them and replant them in October.

I'm trying to follow Mother Nature's schedule. My "start from clove" plants are producing seed pods that would - left to their own - soon fall to the ground and start to grow. So, it's time for me to do the same indoors.

I have also let few shallots go for flower and seedS.The flowers are very large,
larger than onion's. I am also going to plant seeds in the fall for next year.
As I have read in other threads, from seeds you will get a single bulb.
Then if you plant the single bulb in the fall, you will get regular shallots
with clumps of multiple bulbs FOLLOWING YEAR. IS THAT CORRECT?

I've grown Ambition, too, and loved the first-year shallots from seed. They were still in deep dormancy in November, so I waited until early spring to plant them out. They grew well enough, but not as well as (1)new seedlings or (2)organic California-grown shallots from the coop, set out in early spring. The Ambition seed performed well the second year, but germination fell off in year 3. Hope this helps. I love shallots because they keep so well.

Neil, I'll try to get you some seeds. Often our storms steal the seeds in the wind or break the stems on these because they're so tall, but I should be able to get some with a little effort. I hate seed saving, get lazy. It's not that I don't know how, it's just something I avoid. Though some of my prettiest mutts have come from my own harvested seeds, sometimes I get some butt ugly things too. And I always bring bugs into the house on the seeds. One year I had more assassin bugs in here than dust particles. (My husband asked what are these weird bugs and where are they coming from? My dining room was covered with drying flowers for seeds. Duh! He really is intelligent, has a high IQ, wouldn't you THINK he could have guessed? I didn't admit to anything... ) Karen

No dice Lou on using the ones I have had frozen. I peeled or shelled them at least five years ago when I was last up there to harvest any. I'm determined to get some young trees though. I'm trying to rally interest with a brother and a neighbor to plant trees too. If things click I should be putting in an order from one place or another within the coming week. Maybe I will start a Chestnut tree thread tomorrow to get lots of insight from the Web folks and learn some more. I've been reading what I can find from on line searches all day and still have some questions so it would be a fun thread.

Hi Guy's Actually the next person after me would be Bd gardner (Cheryl) and then Maria would appear to be last on the list. I really thought that the seed box "could not" go the USA. I guess maybe checking at the Post office they should be abe to tell if it would get held up at customs or not?? If all goes well I might get the box late this week?? We just dodged a storm here in Sask. they were nick nameing a " Saskatchan screamer" (A foot of snow was forecast!) Thank goodness it was actually more of a Sask. whimper HA! We actually got very little snow but we are getting a couple of days of cold weather! Oh we are tough so we can handle that! (So the really awesome winter in Sask. still stands!) Spring has to still be just around the corner as we can see bare spots in yard! (Smile) Happy planting everyone Theresa
