Does Magnolia tripetala really smell bad?

I'm in Northeast Ohio and I'm trying to create a tropical vibe around my swimming pool. I was considering Magnolia 'tripetala' (Umbrella Magnolia), but several of the descriptions I've read on the 'Net indicate the flowers have an "unpleasant" odor. Here's one description:

"The bowl shaped white flowers are to 10 inches across with six to twelve narrow petals called tepals. They have a distinctive odor, described by one author as having "a strong goat smell", which was probably not intended as an endorsement."

A local nursery carries this tree, but nobody was able to tell me if the flowers are actually repulsive. I love the look, but having something stinky around the pool would be unpleasant to say the least.

If anybody with first-hand experience would care to comment, I'd appreciate it. You might save me from making a big mistake.
