How did you make it thru the night?

and how cold did it get by you?

Acc to the weather site, the coldest here was 25 degrees at 4 am.

that's pretty cold for April.

I wrapped my guys, put them in cardboard boxes, and covered them.

Hope that was sufficient.

I was hoping that the temp would only dip momentarily below freezing. But looks like it was below freezing for several hours. :(

Hope my guys made it.

(I know I'm not going out til it warms up a bit!)

1. We had the same problem last Wednesday. The weather guys told us it would dip below freezing for just an hour or two. It was 28 for several hours that night into the morning. Everything came through just fine. Hope yours make it too. These plants are often tougher than we think. And the soil doesn't always get that cold even if the air is.

I put my one tomato sprout and other tenders in a breezeway between garden and house, unheated. I am not sure if I should put them back out or wait a few hours!
It is 35 now. Should be 50 when I get home from work.

No frost in my area, though I am expecting first frost within a couple of weeks. It is wet, chilly and dreary this morning. I've already got a pot of soup simmering, and it is only 9am! I am going to have to go out into the cold and wet to get some arugula from the garden for this soup. Maybe I'll bring in an armload of firewood whilst I am out and about. We had 13.7 inches here in Racine. I don't mind the shoveling as much as figuring out where to put the stuff! And we are supposed to get some more snow starting tonight, 3 to 5 inches, not bad. But I am running out of places to deposit it. I live on a corner lot and there isn't much of a lawn in front of the house. Just about 3 feet of grass between the sidewalk and the bushes around the foundation. The strip between the street and the sidewalk is pretty high plus with this freezing cold it is hard so the snow that I try to put up there will most likely just slide off. I might have to put the snow in a toboggan and move it around the corner and put it on my side lawn which has a little bit of room. The worst thing of all is that my street is usually plowed after I finish shoveling and that $%^* plow always dumps a mess in the end of my driveway! They swerve around my neighbor's car (who parks in the street) and when they come back over to the side of the road they always push a bunch of snow into my driveway before they straighten out. I asked my neighbor to park on the other side of my driveway but he must have forgot. So I saw him the other day parking his car and explained again and he said he would do it the next time it snowed. I guess I'll have to hope he remembers tonight. Wish me luck. I have an red Amaryllis blooming right now and it is very inspiring to see that in front of the window before my gaze travels past it and sees all of that white snow everywhere. Don't you wish you were like those bears and other animals who hibernate through winter? I know I wish I could just sleep through it all! Kim

You're doing the right thing....organization is the key to success in a renovation. Use the time wisely, to research into the ground every last aspect of your renovation. And it's very wise to do it when you can afford to do it, which means if you save up for 3 years instead of taking out a home equity line, you're better off. Think about all the interest you're saving! When you plan the renovation, make sure you know every last detail, down to brand and model number. Even pick out all of your knobs and pulls before demolition. Every paint color, flooring option, etc. And have one or two backups, just in case what you originally chose doesn't work or becomes too expensive. Too many people rush into a renovation and don't have these details worked out, then panic when their contractor comes in one morning and asks what knobs and pulls will be install next week. Oops! Waiting until you see the cabinets in place then choosing your hardware is NOT the way to do it, and will cost you more in the long run because you are making your contractor change his schedule. I planned for 2 years before demo. Bought the appliances a year and a half before installation to take advantage of year end sales, stored them in the garage. Because I chose more high end appliances, the warranties began upon installation, not purchase, so this was not an issue. Likewise with plumbing fixtures and cabinets...purchased way ahead, stored them in the house. Lighting fixtures, likewise, using my electrician's discount (he allowed me to purchase at his supplier and he didn't take his percentage, saving me about 20% right off the top). I also went to every online site to compare prices. For example, my entry hall chandelier was $750 retail, $500 online, but only $250 thru my electrician's supplier. Shows you how much markup there is in the business. I kept everything in a binder...all appliance installation manuals, paint chips, floor samples, specs, everything. Organized it room by room, and kept the binder where everyone could access it. This was the master plan, and allowed my subs to get easy and quick answers to their questions, even when I wasn't around. If you do this, once construction begins, your job is almost over...that's the easy downhill part of the job.

we had hail, very very intense horizontal rainfall and supposedly the wind was over 75 mph results 8 10 gallon nandinas in a fairly protected place were separated from their pots, and pots and plants were distributed in an area about 50 feet in diameter 20 smaller plants were just dumped out of pots and the plants and soil were separated (clean roots) live oak trees didn't lose any limbs (thank goodness) but lots of leaves were ripped off tomato plants, within a foot of the house were bent double and many limbs lost many trees were uprooted, large limbs broken off and some places you couldn't tell driveways from lawns because there were so many shredded leaves everywhere our house was completed in sept, fortunately we didn't get enough hail to need a new roof but shingles may have been lifted somebody is supposed to come check that out this week wind blew rain through a twelve foot wide screened porch and was hitting a glass door so hard i thought for sure it would break all plants on the porch were moved around a lot and dumped out of pots we didn't lose power but most people in our area did and in some places it's still out...

do they get sun in the breezeway?
Since today is sup'd to be sunny, I would be a little worried even if it went up to 50 degrees that it might get hot inside the container. If possible I would suggest leaving them in dappled shade.

It was a frosty 24F at the lowest last night. I didn't protect anything beyond the coverings that were already in place for WSing, so hopefully everything is okay. I'm not terribly concerned about the perennials that have sprouted as I think they're probably good to tough it out, but mostly wondering if my sunflowers made it though (Mammoth, and a "mix" from Burpee). I'm at work now so I'll have to check this evening when I get home.

I brought a lot of stuff into the garage last night, so I'm guessing they're OK. Just looking at our forecast for this week--night time temps in the 30's through Thursday, not including wind chills.

Looks like another few days of shuffling.

I had sunflower sprouts that got frozen and snowed on for a whole day, they looked fine the next day when the sun came out and the snow melted. I was very surprised and pleased. No more worrying about sunflowers.

floodthelast - boy I always thought sunflowers were more tender but in my experience with them so far they seem to be pretty hardy! I'm going to do a lot more of them next year now that I see they can tolerate this crazy spring weather pretty well!

Bottomed at 27F. Had my already garden planted (WS'd started) tomato seedlings covered. All is well.

Ellen, I'm in southwestern Burlington County and I simply flipped the tops back onto the jugs that had germinated. They are on the eastern side of the house. Everything looked good this morning.

A note: my next door neighbors erected a 6' white vinyl fence last summer. A few weeks ago I noticed self-seedlings popping up in the border along that fence -- sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, and (I think) Amaranthus caudatus). After I saw how well the volunteers were doing, I decided to start direct sowing into that bed.

I don't know if I'd want to set my WS containers there, but it certainly has been good for seedlings!

I think soon we will have enough NJ WS'ers to have a get together!
Maybe we'll even let in a few NY'ers and PA'ers. :)

well, everybody made it thru the night, is uncovered and enjoying the sun. It sure did warm up fast.

I did nothing with mine and they seem to be ok in the containers.

Now I am scared to plant them out cause I bet that a cold snap with them in the ground will be much different.

I am home from work and all my seedlings are fine!
Thanks for asking about the breezeway ellenr! It does get some light but not direct sun. I put all my jugs back out.
karendee-I am also nervous about planting out now. Glad I didn't do it yet.

anewgarden, I thought I was not the only nervous one.
I am second guessing myself cause it is rainy today and the sprouts would have had a good drink and the sun is not out.
Oh Well, maybe next weekend? I would feel safer if I wait till May.

I'm back. Get this: All the WS'd babies (annuals and perennials) made it just fine, along with everything already transplanted out. But, BUT, all the leaf buds on one of my Jap Maples are gone--black as can be!

UGGH! Hopefully, they'll regenerate. I can't believe it.
