best course for sick magnolia

PApersistent

My magnolia has been battling scale all summer. I have given it horticultural oil, tried to water it more, put some compost around it, and taken off the dead branches I can reach. I've had two tree guys come in. One says I should let him take off the rest of the dead branches and generally prune it, the other says I shouldn't do a thing until spring. It has sprouted leaves since I started worrying over it, so I'm a bit hopeful. Part of me wants to get the dead wood off there NOW so it doesn't cause a problem, part of me wants to not stress the tree with a pruning at this point (early August). I'm in suburban Philly. Which part of me should I listen to? Thanks.
