Is this a tree or a weed? Pic included

A couple of these trees are growing out near my back fence. A guy at the nursery thought it was some kind of elm. Is it a tree, or just some kind of weed? If they are trees, I may leave them, though they are pretty close to the fence. Thoughts?

Its a tree and is considered a weed at times. Its probably a green ash, not sure if there are other species of ash growing out there.

It's worth keeping if you need shade there.

kevingalaxy, I believe mowing higher is only beneficial during the summer season. And the reason, imo, is because this does not promote vertical growth because about 1/3 of the blade is in the shade from photosynthesis. About the roots growing... If anything, experts have taught us that root growth is optimum during the spring and fall for cool season grasses. However, in the excessive summer heat, root growth is seized(forgot source). So I don't think roots will follow the water down or to a degree that indicates significance. And besides, roots should already be deep if you followed the deep and infrequent watering during spring/fall. I believe auteck stated in the summer one would need frequent watering... as in spreading out 1.5inch per week on a 0.5inch per basis. I am still debating this but 0.5inch is close to being deep if you have sandy soil. Maybe auteck can fill us in on proper techniques for KBG? [Hopeful] =]

The top one definitely looks like "Foxtail" to me. The bottom one could be Foxtail or just simply Crabgrass. If it's Foxtail on the top one, and it has gone to seed, each plant can generate over 30,000 seeds. Your best control shot would be a good pre-emergent next Spring.

No perhaps about it...Equisetum, otherwise known as horsetail or that @#$#@#&*$#. Impossible to be rid of it. Supposedly cutting it off at ground level everytime it pokes its head aboveground will eventually kill it, but it takes years and I don't have the patience for that. Every so many years I dig up my entire strawberry bed to get out as many roots as possible. No herbicide will kill it effectively...many studies have been done on this plant to try to find an eradication method. I read things like "just cut it off in the spring...it won't regrow that year." Really? Perhaps it doesn't, but it just throws up another sprout from another node. I weed it out all summer long. I'll look for the technical info and post it if I find it!

Hard to tell as I'm using my phone to browse the net but it looks to be either an ash (Fraxinus) or an Elder (Sambucus). The ash will make a very large shade tree eventually and the elder is a white flowering shrub about 10-20 feet high with smelly leaves(not to be confused with Box Elder which is a maple)

It is an Ash species - Green? ~ easy to move in early spring when dormant to a more desirable area near the fence.

I have a couple of these growing in my backyard, and like the idea of moving them since they are pretty close to the fence. How far away from the fence do you all recommend replanting it?

I'd say at least 15' Green ash can have a narrow spread if you want it to, but they make great shade trees if allowed to fill out more. Also, they grow pretty fast and have a really nice yellow fall color, though the leaves drop quickly.
