'Prosperity' versus 'Puerto Rico'?

I bought Prosperity" because I was wowed by it's fragrance in a vase at the Old Rose Celebration, but to my dismay it has an upright growth habit.

How does "Puerto Rico" compare to it as far as

Health

Bloom, does Puerto Rico produce 3 bloom cycles in warm climates as Hybrid Musks do here, or 4 to 5 bloom cycles as Tea class roses do?

Fragrance? Tea or more musky.

Does it have an upright growth habit, or is it more graceful.

Vintage Gardens is now selling "Puerto Rico" as a Tea class rose, though it used to be sold as a Hybrid Musk.

I'd very much appreciate learning more about it.

Lux -- I first saw Puerto Rico in the late 80's or early 90's, in the bed with other found Teas, at the Huntington Botanical Gardens.
I fell in love with it.
It grew like a Tea and looked like one.

Interesting that you describe Prosperity as having an upright growth habit--my PR had that but not Prosperity which is just another long limbed musk for me that could either be a low climber or a wide shrub. But I don't think of it as upright.

I'm only in my second summer and for most of my 55-in-the-ground roses it's the first summer. So maybe my progress report is useless for such young roses. Mainly, my report would be that roses do change as they age. Not a news flash, I know, but it makes me reluctant to make any drastic moves at this point. Regarding 2nd year roses, however, I am much more impressed with Prosperity this year than last. He's 5+ ft tall wrapped around a rebar teepee and getting ready for a 2nd flush which I think, looking at all the buds, is going to be a good one. He hasn't blackspotted as much either and is well foliated. I just have to keep tying up the new growth. I've watched Mrs B R Cant sit still for a year, then this spring throw 4 long canes straight up, bloom and now is blooming off the new growth on those canes. These canes are 5+' tall now. I didn't know this was the way teas "do it". Very interesting. I didn't prune my Belinda's Dream at the end of winter. I was told I shouldn't touch a 1-yr old shrub. But after the spring bloom she was looking nasty with some black tips, little new growth and canes that made no sense. So in March I basically pruned her to about 3' while deadheading. I was planning on moving her anyway so making her smaller was a good thing. She put out a good bloom and now is back to looking awkward again. She does make rather thin canes for her big blooms. I don't know if I should cut her back again in the heat or just let her be. Natchitoches Noisette is 2nd year, but I'll reserve judgment except to say it's sprays of buds always look promising but have only bloomed one at a time - no mass bloom. Since the flowers are not impressive, it's a big nothing. And it gets black spot - maybe just where new growth is pushing out, but still it's ugly. Regarding shade, I must talk about Arcadia Louisiana Tea. I was desperate for space so in March put it in a spot that was getting some PM sun, but once the sun shifted higher in the sky it gets NO sun. A little brightness early in the morning & maybe some brightness in the PM since I cut some branches, but NO direct sun. It's small but right now has a bloom (beautiful, heavy cream-colored flower) and several buds for its 2nd "flush". The first was 3 blooms. It's very leafy, dark green, no blackspot. It's a wonder. I won't mind if it doesn't get huge. I'm just amazed and happy with it. I took out Cramoisi Superieur, CL. It bloomed pretty heavy this spring - all balled even when the heat came. And those killer sharp thorns. It was a mess from heavy spring winds, and I wasn't up to the task of untangling it. Sherry

I am so glad you've a name and provenance for this rose. One of my roses up here is Maggie from Verrett St in Algiers Point. Blooms are identical to the one sold by Antique Rose Emporium, but the leaf matte-i-ness is a bit different. If I can get cuttings started this summer, I'd like you to have one, if you've room. Ann

Annie, I'd like to hear about that Montreal garden too. Ann, it sounds like you are right about it being R. bruonii. It was definitely huge, and no blooms at all that day. Thanks for the info! Malmaison, I was surprised at how much I liked MAM, they had several specimens and they all looked great to me. One of the happiest looking plants in the garden, and a very shapely bush habit. Bon Silene was as big as an ornamental tree. It was a huge plant, perhaps the biggest tea rose I've ever seen. Nur Mahal was grown as a free-standing shrub. The plant was wider than tall, with an open habit and arching canes. I thought of a fountain when I looked at it. It is not a huge plant, and will fit nicely in my garden. Just guessing, I'd say maybe 4 ft tall and perhaps 5 ft wide. I was like a deer caught in the headlights will all these old roses around me, I'm afraid I didn't sample the fragrance on this one. A guy walking around alone in a giant rose garden in Texas could get beat up for looking like he's TOO interested, so I didn't go out of my way to stick my nose into too many blooms :-) In the book, 'The Organic Rose Garden', Liz Druitt raves about this rose's scent. MadGallica, thank you for the info on brunonii ... I am sure you are right. A person could have crawled up under it and been hidden from view it was so mushroom-like and massive. In the step garden area, I think the designer was going for a "knock-your-socks-off" view as you enter the garden from above. That would explain why they had so much of one variety in that area. It is definitely impressive from that vantage point. Valerie, I felt really fortunate to have seen that many old roses in one day at one garden. If you remember lookin4you2xist on gardenweb.com had stolen some cuttings and rose bushes from several people. Well, he has returned to GW with the new username tampabaygardener. His is still advertising his long non-existent list on GW for trades. I know because I replied about Russelliana, and he responded with this email address lookin4you2xist@gmail.com. He also goes by Richard Boone or Andrew at agrover2@tampabay.rr.com, rboone1@tampabay.rr.com He has used several email addresses in response my trade. He never replied as to why he never sent my part of the trade, and he has done the same to others. I have emails and a tracking number from USPS that showed my packaged reached him. He also has a history on the internet of skipping out of payments on Ebay and other websites. Hopefully someone else will read this and not be scammed.

Don't have PR, but my Prosperity (one of my favorites in the garden) is arching, healthy, repeat-blooming, fragrant, AND easy to train. Mine is absolutely not an upright grower. I also find it is not troubled by thrips, BS, or balling.

My Puerto Rico is only a couple of years old, but so far it has a tall, upright growth habit. I've wondered about Vintage's "older Hybrid Musk" description. To my eye it looks more like an older hybrid tea. But whatta I know.

My Prosperity sprawls - maybe a yard tall and arching out about twice as wide.

Lux, do not give away or SP Prosperity, it is such a beautiful rose: a constant bloomer for me-positively more than 3 or 4 flushes per season, has clean foliage and as you already said has a great fragrance. I train mine on an obelisk and it looks it does like it there.

My Prosperity is maybe 5 or 6 years old, very upright growth habit, but wow! what a rose. This year it bloomed most of the season. It started in early spring covered with buds, and opened to a cascade of white like a waterfall. Although I am nearing pruning season, it is still pumping out new buds and ready for a late fall bloom.

My Prosperity is on a pillar and only has 3 or 4 flushes a year.
Puerto Rico is in bloom all of the time. It isn't in flushes, it is just always in bloom. The growth is upright and not like a tea at all, but not quite as bad as an HT. This rose really likes to be tall. I've cut it down to 5' at least twice this year and it has grown right back up to 7' before blooming again.
These roses are both OK, neither are so good that I would replace them if they died, but out of the two Puerto Rico comes out ahead of Prosperity in my garden.

I love my Prosperity. It was planted new this year, and it has developed a beautiful upright and arching shape. The canes grow up some and then arch over. It is graceful and beautiful, and full of gorgeous white clusters of blooms right now. I have it as a speciman plant.

I like Maitland White (also known as Puerto Rico). The flowers are beautiful and are nice for the vase. It has a growth habit between a tea and a hybrid tea. Very healthy, and very tall and upright. It does not arch. Blooms in flushes. I think if I deadheaded more often, it would be a more continual blooom.

Both are totally different, and totally charming.

I have PR from Vintage, which they think is actually Maitland White (I think). It spends quite a bit of time in the shade and gets only afternoon sun (3 to 5 hours depending on the season). It blooms quite regularly in flushes--about 4 or 5. I expect it would bloom more continuously if it were planted in a sunnier spot. For me, it grows more like an HT than a HM. I love the white blooms that grow in clusters like an HM. It has thrown canes of 5 feet or so in its second year, so it seems to have lots of growth potential. To my nose it has more of a Tea scent. My garden is no-spray and PR has not shown any signs of disease whatsoever at this point in time.

My Prosperity was growing like a shrub with fountain like shape and I saw it growing more upright and asked its owner how to get that shape. Hard pruning and then it will grow more upright. It works.

My PR from Roses Unlimited is a good rose for bloom, health, etc., but has little scent. I bought it by bringing a rose to Pat from their display garden because I liked the smell, and she sold me PR. Since mine has no scent, I wonder if it is the same one. A good rose none the less.

My Prosperity gets more bs than Puerto Rico and is more upright. The blooms on Puerto Rico are a good bit larger and to me, prettier. I don't notice much fragrance on either one! Puerto Rico blooms more.
