I think I've finally figured it out!
Comments (10)Thank you! it has been a frustrating and expensive battle! My zoysia in the front yard is beautiful and I've never had ant trouble with bermuda, but this fescue fiasco was something I had never dealt with before. Good idea about alternating the fungicides! I will have my chemical company order one of the ones you recommended. After all my research, I ended up seeding with a combination of Rhambler and a new fescue by Lewis Seed (tested as SC-1 but now called LS1000 or something like that.) I have attempted to add a link to show you how beautifully it is this year. I hope I did it right! :) How in the heck do you add a picture to your post? lol Here is a link that might be useful: yard 2010...See MoreYoung Lycidas
Comments (16)I wanted to get Sister Elizabeth too, but I've shied away from a lot of those "old rose hybrids" of Austin (Harlow Carr for example) because they do not do well in my micro-climate. I wish they did. I think it's a "not cold enough plus too dry" thing. Even though it's very late to plant bare-roots for us, (that time is December/January) I am very tempted to get this one now. I've planted a Pope John Paul II in June before and it's doing fine....See MoreSouvenir de la Malmaison and Young Lycidas
Comments (35)desertgarden561, I think you are lucky to live in Las Vegas. I have visited the strip and downtown 5 or 6 times. I looove it! Of course, I know there is more to life in Vegas than the casinos. I have yet to explore other things to do! On HGTV once again, I see lovely residences. I like the Spanish architecture or red tile roofs that many of your houses (and California) have. In Houston, these are usually seen in custom made homes. The style that dominates here is hardi-plank siding with partial brick, or all brick/all hardiplank. Not much stucco. Neutral colors on siding & garage. Our older communities include: mid century modern (Bellaire/Braeswood/Meyerland) and bungalows (Houston Heights). Galveston, TX (beaches, Gulf of Mexico) is a 30 min. drive from my house has colorful cottages and once grand mansions. Think Key West.... I have SEVERE seasonal allergies. Every year it seems to progress. I am not alone, so the Target pharmacist says. I just have to ride it out (usually 3 weeks). Then it settles... Until...the seasons change again! So it may be the grass, pollen, ragweed, whatever. I have never bothered to be tested. I think grass is overrated. We have our lawn mowed every 2 weeks (we had way overdue rain recently). So now the grass is growing leaps and bounds, definitely needs weekly!!! But to its defense, a well manicured lawn with roses the day after rain is well...lush and verdant. You would think that I could buy David Austin roses anywhere locally since the U.S. base is in Tyler, TX. But no, I order online just like anyone else. Besides 'Young Lycidas' (ordered from David Austin), I have 8 'The Prince' from Chamblees....See MoreI've ordered Jesse Hildreth!
Comments (21)Dear Lisa, I am so touched, even tearing up a bit, with your very kind and generous praise. It's simply that I love roses, especially the old ones, and want to pass on what I know the same way that others have over and over passed on to me. The only way I can repay their selfless help is to try and do the same for newer members, or members with unfamiliar roses. Right now my mostly bloomless roses look a bit like a shapeless jungle, and I'm afraid I might have planted some things a little too close together, something that an experienced gardener never, ever does! I'm guessing it will be another two weeks before there will be some blooms, and by that time it should also be cooler. Another upper 90's scorcher today, 99 yesterday. It says something for the toughness of roses that they put up with this kind of abuse week after week....See More- 11 years ago
