I often plop my bucket of soil in front of the tv and watch something with my family or just my hubby and the toddler. He mostly spills the soil on the floor. My toddler not my husband that is.

Ahhh, a little chay chay, a hot pot of some sauce on the stove, Top Chef on Bravo or Anthony Bourdain on Travel, cats at my feet, kids coming in and out of the front door, and SASBEs arriving on the front porch. Phone rings and it's a good friend. Then off to check Garden Web and see what's going on.

One or two containers done. Heaven.

I do all my WSing out in the cold frame (it's big, 30 feet long, 10 wide and about 6 high), so I mostly just enjoy the quiet.

I usually wear my (Sansa) MP3 player, which is filled with a wide variety of tunes...from Nanci Griffith to Gypsy Kings to Vivaldi...I find music adds to the enjoyment. A cold can of Diet Coke, my faithful pooch lounging on the grass nearby, and I'm off to the races :-)

Sometimes, though, especially if it's a warm, sunny day...I will leave the tunes indoors, and listen to the birds. I live out in the country, literally in the middle of nowhere...on a brick road (no, it's not yellow, LOL)...and there is no traffic or man-made noise at all. Just the happy sounds of nature *smile*

Pure bliss.

I do my WSing at the kitchen sink. Usually, I just do the sowing, although occasionally I might have something on the stove or be doing some other small chore while the containers are draining, etc.

And I just enjoy the silence. If a family member is around sometimes he or she will hang out and we'll talk while I sow, but usually it's just me!

I like sowing in the late afternoon while my hubby and son are home, but before I make dinner. I watch tv with them while sowing, or we just hang out with the critters and chat.

I also like to sneak in a few containers when they are not home, during the day. Winter sowing, or gardening in general, is one of those guilty pleasures I have. I really don't want it to take away anything from my family, yet at the same time I think it relaxes me so I can be more present for them.

I do assembly line winter sowing in my basement laundry room singing along with the radio or listening to the tv which is on in another room.

I do mine in the kitchen, too. Bag of soil in the sink, containers on the counter, my seed box and seed list on the counter behind me, sown containers on the floor, a big mug of tea across the room (sugar only, please, no soil!). I take over the room!

I listen to CD's while I sow. We're planning a Spring Dance and we have to put together the play-list. So I listen to a snippet of a song while I'm filling a jug, skip to the next track, throw a few seeds in, write down the track number of the good dance-songs, skip to the next track, tape and label the jug, skip to the next song, take a sip of tea, etc. It's very nice. Only me, my cat, seeds, and music in the house. Really, really nice.

Yes, I'm excited for spring to get here, but I'll miss these lovely quiet mornings with the sun coming through the windows and my sowing stuff all over the kitchen.

I try to catch up on NPR radio shows I've had to miss--old episodes of Wait Wait, (a funny news quiz) or Prairie Home Companion (a hokey sort-of old-time radio show I love)

Or, I try to put on some really good music.

I think if I tried to cook while wintersowing, there's be tomato sauce in a jug and some unknown seeds flavoring the spaghetti sauce. I'm a mono-tasker!
