White Mulberry

Does anyone else have huge problems with white mulberry?

I live in an urban area and they are EVERYWHERE. They won't stop. They sprout up all over the place, especially along fences. They are invasive exotics and people don't seem to care. Scarily enough, they are even worse than tree of heavens! If given the chance they would form huge groves and thickets. And their berries don't even taste very good, they are disgusting.

Do any of you have problems with this invasive exotic? Or is it just a problem unique to my neighborhood?

White mulberry is actually on the recommended tree list for this area put out by the KS Forest Service, but only fruitless male clones. The reason that it is on the list is that it can handle cold, heat, drought and damp or alkaline soils. It is a survivor here where things can get tough. However, give this species GOOD conditions and it will go nuts and become invasive. Red mulberry is the same menace here as is white in your area. Both have monster root systems from hades, insect and disease pests, and are last resorts.

Unlikely that you've got M.nigra(black). See linked article below which nicely goes through the traits you can use to differentiate between M.rubra and M.alba. Hybrids of red & white may be intermediate between the two parent species or more like one or the other. Here is a link that might be useful: Red & White mulberries in IN

I live in a rental apartment that comes with yard access. There is a large tree in the yard that is dropping these berry-like things ALL over the place. They are making a mess of the yard. Then I read something that made me think it might be a mulberry tree and upon googling, I think that's what it is. The "berries" look very much like the white ones in the attached photo. http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/892/ Or is it possible they could be something else? If it IS a white mulberry, any idea as to when the berry-dropping season will end?! :-) Tx.
