Just because it's cool...
Comments (14)Dorie; It looks like the A. konjac; I looked at all photos I could find. A. konjac is supposed to be the easiest to grow. Actually it is easy, just water here & there. I keep it outside in part shade during summer. Mark; thanks for the link - so far I didn't check Aroid forum since I spend too much time already on others...so decided to wait for the flower....maybe few years?! I never had chance to see the flowers. I received tuber from my aunt many yrs. ago, she said hers was blooming few times & it stunk. Toni; yes, it goes dormant & sprouts again soon after New year - depends when I start watering it. The tuber gets bigger every year. The tallest one I had was about2.5feet tall. Comments (55)Brix studies are highly controversial...especially those dealing with tomatoes. If you're going to compare supermarket ethylene ripened toms to plant ripened toms you're going to get skewed brix results...the plants simply do it better than forcing the ripening, and it does have to do with better micronutrient availability. That said, there's a lot of high brix/low acid testing brix advocates that want people to put a foolish amount of micronutrients in their soil rather than building a soil structure/quality that can better hold and exchange micronutrients. There's a big industry building around selling people extremely expensive bags of micronutrients the past decade which wash their way through the soil profile and/or are over-amended to make up for poor soil. Build your soil quality (holding/exchange capability), apply less, benefit more. They're micronutrients...you don't need a lot, you just need them to hang around. Comments (6)I placed an order to Roses Unlimited the other week with clarity and purposeful thought -- really, I did. Old Gray Cemetery had to be on the list because my original one died this spring, and I had to have another. I love my Red Radiance, so I got the original Radiance for the antique HT bed in front of the house. The other 4 are ones that I thought would be interesting: Mrs. Keays Pink Noisette (you know about me and found roses), Dr. J. H. Nicolas, Ringlet (a cool Alister Clark climber), and Pharisaer (an old HT). With my fall Palatine and Pickering orders, I concentrated on getting roses to replace the ones that I already have budded on Dr. Huey. The exception to this is Peace. I have Peace from a Walmart bag, Peace VID ownroot from Vintage, and now I'll have Peace on multiflora. I'm going to grow them all just to see what happens. I agree with the assessment about shopping at an actual nursery (except when I'm with Robert -- hey, Robert, how many plants can you stuff into a BMW?). Went to the nursery yesterday to get some supplies . . . wandered through the plant section and oohed and aahed at lots of stuff (tropicals were 50% off, BTW) . . . went back inside and left with 2 bags of spagnum, a huge bag of perlite, and 3 packs of bamboo stakes. No plants. But, put me in front of a computer with a cat in my lap and a credit card close by . . . you all know the rest. :) Connie P.S. I blame it on the cat....See MoreHas Anyone Ever Ordered from Roses Unlimited?
Comments (49)Sheila, if Triomphe is the smaller of the two that's all to the good as my goal is to have all the roses in front of the house. No more Tea Rose Row, alas! I may decide to have one or two roses in the back since that's my view when I sit in my customary chair in the living room. I used to have the genuine Wm. R. Smith and I'd love to have it again some time. I'm not very fond of teas that turn red although many people love them. Kitty, I used to feed the squirrels and their population exploded. It's difficult to know what to do, for sure. I think having a dog might be a deterrent but we're not up to caring for one any more. berrypie, if you look under Classes and then under Tea Roses you'll see most of the ones I ordered....See MoreUser
