Nov bloom on "once bloomer"

Well, my Cl Cecile Brunner is having its normal Oct/Nov bloom. It goes up the side of our house. As i was walking by yesterday, I noticed a strange bloom cluster among the pink, which was bright yellow - yup, the banksiae lutea must have gotten excited by all of the CB blooms - you can see the little yellow cluster among the pink, right in the middle of the pic.

Down here, our weather has bees so wierd, we had camellias blooming, just a few weeks back. I think the plants are confused. :-) (God knows, EYE am!)

What can I say? Weather is weird. My 'Blue Skies' lilac is blooming right now.

Will this plant possibly become remontant as time goes by? The answer to that question is yes. ASG has the reputation of taking its time to settle in, and it sounds like yours expended its energy in growth at the expense of bloom during its first couple of seasons in your garden. It's certainly possible that you'll get a fall flush this year, but my guess is that it'll really come into its own in the 2011 season. Where you garden, I'd expect that you will get at least four good bloom cycles a year. In my garden, ASG takes a leisurely rest of several weeks between each flush. FWIW, the fact that your plant is grafted MAY have contributed to its failure to produce lots of bloom early on. My grafted 'Mme Alfred Carriere' from Pickering behaved in a similar manner -- very rapid growth, unimpressive bloom production for the first couple of years or so, which was not my experience with an own-root of the same variety.

Some can "rebloom" once they hit maturity. I often had repeat on my enormous Silvermoon in the desert. Though many can provide further flowers as Dr. Manners offered, some don't require the changes in weather to stimulate it. Some will seem to repeat because the spring like weather lasts longer. Along the coast here in Southern California, "spring" lasts for many months until the summer heat hits. There, the Banksiae roses flower for many months. A number of the old ramblers will follow suit. Some can be tricked into reblooming. I grew Schoener's Nutkana for many years and found if I permitted it to set seed, hold them for a few weeks, then completely dead head the plant, water it heavily and feed it, the plant repeated its spring performance as it thought it had over wintered and entered another spring season due to the loss of its hips, increased food and water. What a thought provoking question! My flowerbeds also contain many once blooming varieties and I have even wondered if some were "pulling their weight" - even my all-time favorite bearded iris when they turn yellow and icky through the summer. Your question caused me to ask myself why these plants really are so dear to me. First, I don't garden in order to put on a show for passersby. My house and gardens cannot be seen from the road. In fact, my place is surrounded by a fence with a locked gate. My gardens are for me and a very few people who spend time in them. Curb appeal has nothing to do with it so it really doesn't matter for that reason if there are times when it is less than spectacular. I have to look within to figure out why the often old fashioned, short blooming plants have so much space here. I think it has to do with one of the ways gardening itself serves a purpose in my life. In spite of physical limitations, health concerns, financial insecurity, personal heartaches, disappointments, and worries, gardening is one of my strongest links to hope. You cannot garden without hope. And I have only to think of how looking forward to the lovely fall aster show (short as it may be) carries me through the dreadfully hot days of late summer to know that I could not bear to give them up. The iris may look disheveled for much of the year but I long for their gorgeous display and fragrance after long gray winter. Would it even BE spring without the cheerful yellows of dwarf coreopsis and yellow alyssum? What would my shade garden path be without daphne in winter and mock orange in spring? These plants, because they are not always "on" allow me to look forward past momentary disappointments (no blooms on the hydrangeas this year!?) and uninspiring sameness (scrub oak in the background looks about the same except in winter) with hope that good things are still ahead. Like a solo stands out in a choral performance, these brief shows serve as highlights that I would not want to miss.

My setigera has 5-leaflet leaves. They are down fairly far, but they are there. There are also thornless forms of setigera, though I seem to be growing only ultra-thorny ones here. Remember, there is going to be a certain amount of variation between individual plants. This is probably a seedling, not a clone like the usual garden roses. So the picky little details of thorniness, stipule shape, stipule color, etc. will have natural variations.

We've had some odd bloomings this year too! About a month ago the honeysuckle was blooming and even one of my forsythias! Mother Nature is a bit confused I'd say :)

That is exciting---Many years ago we went to Martha's Vineyard for our yearly visit in Oct.---much to my surprise the Lilacs and Forsythia were all in bloom----One of my friends who lives year-round on the Island said it was because of Hurricane Bob---seems the water washed up on all the plants and then the temps dropped so everything was frozen----well according to my friend the plants all thought winter had come and gone so they proceeded to burst into their "spring bloom"----it was really something to see

I went outside the other day and found a bloom on Gallica officinalis!!! Now that really knocked me over.

We have a few blooms on 2 of our Rhododendron.They happen to be yellow so a bit cheery. The daylillies are also blooming again.

Many plants are "confused" with the odd weather much of us have had. The stinky Evergreen Pears are flowering sixty days early here. Normally, that happens just before the heaviest of the rains in January so their foul smelling blooms get beaten off by the rains. I HOPE that's the case this year. They stink! Kim

I have a big hedge of forsythia and noticed that one stem was blooming yesterday. Can't say " the forsythia is blooming " because only a little tip of one cane is, but still it is something I haven't seen before. Also saw a few honeysuckle blooms. More amazing to me is that my relatively new La Ville de Bruxelles has rebloomed several times this year.

Today, I explained to my once blooming cuttings that it would be okay if they decided to put out a bud or two. Pretty sure they did not listen to me...sigh. (I would really like to ask what they are)

If you summer prune banksias, they rebloom. In a park near me they are clipped into gumdrop shape, and usually have some bloom on them. We pruned our white single on the barn this summer, and it was in pretty full bloom all October.
Yours probably isn't a weather related fluke, you probably just trimmed back a cane or two over the summer.

I think this is somewhat common in mild weather areas. I see it happening in the village of Mendocino.
