Yes, especially if there has been some cool weather, fooling them into "thinking" there's been a winter. On the north coast of California, where summers are quite cool, many once-bloomers bloom more or less continuously. I've seen that in Joyce Demits' garden in Fort Bragg.

Conversely, here in central Florida where winters are warm, some once-bloomers don't even bother with blooming once. I had 'Celeste' and some Gallicas, many years ago, and in a 4+ year period, they only bloomed once, and then with just a few blossoms, after an unusually cool winter.

Some can "rebloom" once they hit maturity. I often had repeat on my enormous Silvermoon in the desert. Though many can provide further flowers as Dr. Manners offered, some don't require the changes in weather to stimulate it. Some will seem to repeat because the spring like weather lasts longer. Along the coast here in Southern California, "spring" lasts for many months until the summer heat hits. There, the Banksiae roses flower for many months. A number of the old ramblers will follow suit. Some can be tricked into reblooming. I grew Schoener's Nutkana for many years and found if I permitted it to set seed, hold them for a few weeks, then completely dead head the plant, water it heavily and feed it, the plant repeated its spring performance as it thought it had over wintered and entered another spring season due to the loss of its hips, increased food and water. I find that some of my once-bloomers rebloom moderately after going semi-dormant during a hot and/or dry summer. Last year, I had rebloom on Silver Moon and Alberic Barbier ... not unusual for Alberic Barbier, but never have I had rebloom on Silver Moon. This year, after a short break at the end of summer, Schoener's Nutkana bloomed again fairly well ... something that delighted me to no end because I love this rose! Right now, I have a few flower clusters on Ghislaine de Feligonde.

Yes, that makes sense. Weather certainly seems to be a factor here, as we have experienced the very sequence Malcolm describes, i.e. an unusually cool and wet July following a very hot and dry May and June, so it really felt like autumn after high summer. Also interesting Kim's comment about manipulating re-bloom. As it happens, we did a bit of clean-up after the May flush and also cut back a number of overly-exuberant canes. On the other hand, our Ghislaine has not repeated well at all, despite dead-heading. Thank you for your replies! Here is Albertine in mid-May this year.
