Saint Patrick Cut rose doesn't open

I'm new to rose gardening and have some roses on order for spring (Can't wait for Annie Laurie McDowell). To ease the waiting period, a very nice rose society friend shared some cut roses from her garden with me. She brought over blooms of Moonstone and Saint Patrick. As the days went by, the Moonstone rose opened, but the Saint Patrick rose stayed frozen in place. The photo posted was taken a week later. I have seen beautiful photographs of Saint Patrick, so I assume the rose opens just fine on the bush. Is this a typical experience with Saint Patrick? I am looking for a nice yellow rose to go next to a red hybrid tea. Thank you.

It looks like the petals have been wet or damaged by a fungal disease called botrytis. The petals get stuck together when this happens, and the blooms won't open.

Plus -- 'St. Patrick' loves heat. So, when the weather is chilly, it may have problems opening, or open poorly.

In my coastal climate, I figured it wasn't a good option for my garden. So, I asked Tom Carruth: "How's 'St. Patrick' likely to look, in my conditions?"

Tom replied:
"Butt ugly."

So, we never planted 'St. Patrick' here.

Most of the dark velvety reds make decent cutting roses for me. I have Veterans' Honor,Let Freedom Ring, Beloved, Liebeszauber, Olympiad, Ingrid Bergman, Grande Amore, Royal William, Dream Scarlett, and The Passion in my garden that are good red cutting roses. As far as some of the other colors, Light Pink, Brown/Tans,and most yellows don't last as long as most other roses. Also a lot depends on the amount of substance the petals of the flower have. The more petal substance, the longer they last and unfortunately generally the less fragrant they are--just like most florist roses. A few "others" that are good cutting roses for me are Terracotta, Mavrik, St. Patrick, Marilyn Monroe, O'rilla, Cary Grant, Pope John Paul II, Spellbound, Folklore, Elizabeth Taylor, Welcome Home, DayBreaker, Preference, Hot Cocoa. Also, some mini/miniflora's are pretty good for me as well. Just depends on the substance of the flowers. Try This Is The Day, Fairhope, Dr. John Dickman, Power Point, Ingrid, Denver's Dream, Ricky Hendricks, Camden, Leading Lady, Peter Cottontail, Rachel, Nancy Jean, Sassy Cindy, Jupiter, Conundrum, Charismatic, Irresistible, Dr. Troy Garrett, Coffee Bean, and Glowing Amber. These have been pretty cutting roses in my garden. Make sure you cut your stems underwater and use something to feed the blooms like plain sugar, 7-up/Sprite, or a professional product like Chryshal. I also add a few drops of bleach per vase that keeps bacteria from forming a black plug at the bottom of the stem and keeps the flower from sucking up water it needs. Recut the stems and refresh the water every 3 or 4 days to keep them fresh an extra 4 days or so. And, keeping them in the fridge at night if possible will extend the vase life of cut blooms. I grew St. Patrick in the past, we've moved a few times and it was always a favorite of mine here in So Cal. My husband is a huge fan so we plan on getting a new one soon. Maybe she just needs sometime to get established? Some roses are picky about where they are growing in your yard. Occasionally a change of location makes a world of difference. I'm unsure of your watering techniques but, sometimes how you water will effect blooms, especially in humidity it might be best to water only the base. Hopefully St Patrick will turn around for you, it really is a amazing rose-if it's behaving! Good Luck, Carlota

my pierre de ronsard doesn't have any blooms

Pierre de Ronsard is one of the most disappointing roses out of 120 or so I had in my garden. It only has to get a little bit damp and the blooms turn soggy and brown, but that maybe is due to Melbourne's weather. Even so there are many others that don't do it. Climbers generally flower on the second season's wood, so if you are cutting off the new shoots you won't have anything to flower on next year. Prune the old dead wood and let the others grow up when they will flower the second year. Prune them by cutting off the flowers for a vase. You can shorten anything old or too long, by about one third in winter.

I think you could be right. It is pretty dry in zone 8b, but my friend waters her roses daily. It could be too much for this rose. Thank you for your response.

I have had roses do that before. Not heat related. I call it balling.

Were the sepals down? I like to fill my vases almost to the top. They need water to expand their tissue. All of the above are also possible. Some roses are more prone to things than others. My SP has very tight large buds. Did not like Chicago!

St Patrick takes a long time to open but once open the blooms last forever and hold their light yellow slightly tinted green color. This rose loves heat and it hates being wet so it'd perfect for Pasadena. It's shortcoming is that it is short. It wants to spread out and it is always in bloom. Moonstone is a fabulous rose that I never grew in Connecticut I guess because it was too weak. Here in SoCal it grows huge with gorgeous high petal count blooms that hold a long time. It does fade and wilt a bit in the heat but it is very strong and almost never out of bloom.

Love the pictures of Saint Patrick...I think I will give it another chance. Henryinct, your Moonstone is beautiful. I think Moonstone makes a great cut rose and for me, it is moderately fragrant. I was surprised to see it rated fair minus for frangrance at Help Me Find Roses. It's always nice to meet a rose in person :)

St Patrick is the best blooming yellow I have and the best holding. Back in CT with cooler temps and here earlier in the year it had that slight green tint that is so attractive but now in the heat the bloom starts medium yellow with a darker yellow center and then fades very slowly eventually almost to white. Now it is getting a bit cooler so maybe there will be the green tint again. I should say that in Z6b St Patrick was quite weak and in many winters it was killed to the ground so it never got very big. My HT's here were planted in February so I don't know how any of them will do after they get well established. Perhaps St Patrick will get really big like the rest.
