Is now an acceptable time to root a twig? Help!!

.... I picked 2 twigs yesterday. One is a varigated bouganvillea, hope that's spelled right. And the other one is a weeping Japanese Maple. They're each around 5 or 6 inches long and neither are wilted at this time. For the time being I have them in a vase of water in a brightly lit window, where there would be morning sun but today is overcast. So what do you think are my chances of getting roots? Any advice? Maybe rooting hormone in a little pot of compost with a plastic tent over it? Which one, if either, would do better, do you think, with just water? Full sun or a just little? Outside or in? They were both outside in full sun when I picked them.I've rooted lots of things and have often tried rooting these 2 types of plants but no success yet. So any help will be thoroughly appreciated! :)Thanks so much, Nancy.
